    Great idea- doesn't work

    Written by RP from Robertsbridge

    16-Dec-2009

The concept is great and when working is fine- unfortunately it's just too 'flakey' and unreliable.
I bought this to stream music through and run a printer off. Worked like a dream straight out of the box but then started cutting out after 6 hours use. After setting it up countless times it may work for 10mins to a couple of hours then cuts out all the time/ my mac can't find it.
I thought it may be a faultly product so got a replacement, but the same thing happens.
Looking on the internet lots of people have had similar problems.
Come on Apple, everything else you make works so well- so this problem out!

    Be wary, serious AirTunes fault.

    Written by BT from Plymouth

    18-Nov-2009

I adore apple products because they're easy to set up and use. This device should be no different. I have two 'Airport Express Base Stations', one in my lounge connecting to my modem using the Ethernet port, the other is upstairs connecting a games console to the network allowing it to go online, again via Ethernet port. Furthermore, laptops (apple and windows-based) and a PC connect to this network wirelessly and both 'Base Stations' are also connected to hi-fi's in each room to take advantage of AirTunes.

Once set-up, i have had no issues with the wireless networking (main) aspect of the Apple Express. However, the AirTunes is completely unusable, songs regularly stutter or drop out for 20-30 seconds at a time, making it a complete waste of time.

If you need a reliable wireless network, get this. If you want to use the AirTunes feature now, or at any point in the future, forget about it.

    Most unreliable product I've owned

    Written by NO from Manchester

    10-Nov-2009

As others have pointed out, when it works it's a dream; especially when used with Apple Remote. The problem is that ever since I've owned it, it doesn't work properly several times a week and now is not working at all, as many others have experienced after owning it for a year or so. Either my MBP will not recognise it in a scan (despite the base station being feet away with a green light) or when Itunes does recognise it it won't play and I get that error 15006 message.

I think it's an indictment that so many of the reviews point to the same problem yet what looks like a newer version has come out and still people are reporting similar problems. A blot on an otherwise blissful Apple experience for me, in general.

    Airport Express Disaster

    Written by CW from Wargrave

    14-Oct-2009

Just bought Airport Express today to stream i-tunes from my PC. I have spent over 4 hours trying to get it to connect wirelessly, but it just won't get recocgnised on my home network. It is fine with an ethernet connection, but the whole point of buying it is for wireless. I fear this product will be binned, as Apple will no doubt refuse a re-fund. I am a reasonablY competent techno guy having set up small server based office networks, but this has stumped me. Suggest any PC users avoid this like the plague. I'll just have to wait until Apple allow people to stream through PS3's - that was dead easy to set up and streams photo's etc really well. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

    UNRELIABLE

    Written by GE from TENBY

    13-Oct-2009

After two days of trying to get it to work and a revisit to the store I find this to be the most temperamental and unreliable products ever produced by Apple. Each reset and setup fails to deliver connectivity. I would not recommend this to anyone on any account. I will be returning it for a refund but am tempted to throw it out of my bedroom window as I write.

Lots of drop-outs with airtunes when used as main wifi access to internet. Can't surf and listen to music. To avoid the drop-outs need to buy another wireless router and plug this with a cable !!!

Can't make this product work reliably for AirTunes with latest Apple MacBook Pro, latest Mac OS (10.6 or 10.5) and Netgear RangeMax wireless router (latest firmware). Works for a while, then goes through period of frequent drop outs = unusable. Fixes involve tracking down system errors like -15006 and hours on router support sites and forums - great fun. Had more problems with this Apple product than any other Apple product in 20+ years as a Mac user.

    Bad problems with airtunes

    Written by JR from LANCASTER

    30-Aug-2009

The things this little box does well, it does fine. But sadly it has a real problem with airtunes, dropping out chunks of sound to make it awful and unlistenable. Apple must address this problem soon, but until they do, this is definately NOT doing what it says on the box. Check out discussions to find out if and when it gets fixed, or forget about using it for music.

    Hopeless

Written by SA from Sunbury on Thames

    26-Jun-2009

I had it for two weeks. I must have spent 10 hours trying to get it set up with my MacBook. The documentation is hopeless. I tried the reset three times, loaded the software twice, and the final outcome was that the mac kept saying it was unable to see any Apple devices at all. I took it back and got my money refunded. Interesting to note that others had similar experiences and I have to add this is completely contrary to all my previous experiences with Apple products. They need to sort it out and make it user friendly and do some thing with the documentation or on screen help.

It wasn't straightforward to set up the wizards use too much network terminology in places, but you can get up and running. I had some problems with security settings. Data transfer as also quite slow, even though my computer was less than 2m away from the base station. Main problem was that the unit failed just over a year after I purchased it (nice piece of engineered obsolescence?).So looks pretty, but hasn't lasted.

Should be amazing, but it just isn't

I purchased AirPort Express with the view of streaming iTunes around my house. Unfortunately, after almost 7 hours of trying to set this thing up, I've given up and am taking it back. It just seems impossible to connect this thing up. First of all, the documentation is inadequte to say the least and doesn't help in any way. Secondly, every time I restarted the process and got an error message, the error code was different making it difficult to diagnose the problem. Apple need to be really careful here. For me, Apple are a company that produce powerful but usable technology. Unfortunately, the last two products I've purchased (this and the Macbook) have been rubbish (the Macbook still randomly shuts down after 10 mins). I for one will be keep clear of Apple products in the future as I always end up frustrated and disappointed. Just for the record, I would have posted this review earlier but I've spent the last 2 hours trying to get my home network up and running again after the failed AirPort installation caused that to fail for some unknown reason.

Good idea that just does not want to work.

    Written by DM from Worcester

    19-Apr-2009

I got this so I could stream music to some speakers in my flat. I have a unibody MBP and a 3rd party router.

I ran through the setup and it all seemed to be ok, but iTunes keeps giving me an "unknown error (-15000)" with no hint as to what the problem might be.

I have managed to get it to work with iTunes and then it will just stop and give me the error again. I get better uptime by using Airfoil by Rouge Ameba which indicates that it is configured correctly and does work, otherwise it would be going back to the shop.

Looking online it seems that it works great for some people and not for others. Sadly I am the latter.

DO NOT BUY ANY MAC NETWORK DEVICE

    Written by JN from Reading

    26-Mar-2009

Mac products are generally very good but there network devices are terrible, I sent a time capsule back. now I am on the brink of replacing my two airport express devices after upgrading to 7.4.1.

Yes they have great features, and you think wow I would really like to listen to music in different rooms, print and go back to my home computer. If they worked or even consistently appeared and did not drop the connection every day or sometimes twice a day. Version 7.3 was not too bad at least once it had dropped the connection it would pick it up again.

I recommend thinking seriously before investing in these products. In fact think belkin, think netgear... think two cups and some string, if you want a decent network.

I am not alone and you should not join me, simply search the web to see how poor this product is.

If it worked it'd be 5 stars

I have had mine about 3 weeks now & on my 2nd unit. I bought it to stream iTunes to my desktop speakers, as I hate having loads of wires plugged into my macBook pro. When it works it's absolutely fine, but the thing is, the sound keeps dropping out, sometimes making it unlistenable. I have tried adjusting the settings, but with no joy. I personally think that there's an incompatibility issue with iTunes 8, and will hopefully be sorted out by an update in the near future, if not, then I will be giving up on it & chucking it in the bin. At the moment it pains me to say, but it's the worst Apple product I have ever bought & it really lets the side down.
Come on Apple, SORT IT OUT!!!

    Not for Kodak!

    Written by PK from Mirfield

    14-Feb-2009

This sounded like the perfect add on for my new iMac. I was switching from PC to iMac and decided to overhaul the way I used my computers at home. I thought I'd be able to have my Kodak printer, a great AiO, cheap to run and great photos, attached to the AirPort. Wrong it took two days of phone calls to Apple to actually get the Airport to work as a network and then one call to Kodak to find that it isn't compatible with wireless technology. So sent the Airport back for a refund, reconnected my Belkin WiFi, hard wired the printer and internet to the iMac and now am back to using a USB stick to move documents from one machine to another when I want to print! Take great care that the printer you want to attach is compatible with the system BEFORE buying.

Didn't quite do what the sales guy said

    Written by AA from Bath

    07-Feb-2009

I was sold one of these to work as a wireless network interface at 5Ghz N speeds(i.e. to use it to connect my LAN port to a wireless network generated by my Time Capsule)

Fantastic, I thought, all the speed of Wireless N! Unfortunately the express only has a 10/100 LAN port so would bottle neck to below the speed I could get with 2.4 Ghz N... if I had actually managed to get it working in that mode (I gave up once I noticed the 10/100 problem so don't have a full review).

I've got to give it only the one star since it didn't do what I was told it would. Whatever you want it to do might be fine though.

Bought this for my Mum for xmas so she could listen to her music upstairs on her new mac which she loves. Told her it was simple to set up but she didn't get round to it so i popped in when i had a spare 5 mins.

Oh dear I was there for 3 hours getting to various levels of completing the set up and after speaking to Apple support team for nearly an hour they could only tell me it didn't work. Duh i knew that!

I have tried a replacement product and even got to listen to music for 2 seconds before it cut out. The base station is 2 metres form the Mac while we test it! Looking forward to wasting another day taking it back for a refund to our not so local mac store.

    Ethernet modem needed

    Written by PK from London

    29-Dec-2008

Nothing in this long description tells you that you also need a compatible modem to create a wireless network. On the contrary, you are told that setting up a wireless network is easy and that you only need a compatible computer. My existing USB modem doesn't work with the Airport Express. I'll need to buy an ethernet modem, which is around the same price as a basic wireless router/modem. £65 seems to have bought me very little extra functionality.
