Lots of drop-outs with airtunes when used as main wifi access to internet. Can't surf and listen to music. To avoid the drop-outs need to buy another wireless router and plug this with a cable !!!

Just excellent!

Having already coughed up for a Netgear wireless print server I was left with my printer not compatible and requiring some serious know how in configuring it with vista, a task that is mind boggling with TCP/IP protocols and ports being set and not recognised. After 2 very long and frustrating hours I gave up and went and bought this from PC World. It is just amazing. It worked straight out the box and I was printing whilst streaming my music via AirTunes within 15mins - it would have been 2mins if I had read the instructions and plugged everything in at first! Once again the only flaw in an Apple product is the fleshy end user. The fact that this will connect to ones wireless network or create it's own is just amazing and completely worth the price. I've already convinced a friend to go and buy one tomorrow. Thank you apple for being brilliant - as always. When will the backwardness of PC vanish from this Earth?!

Absolutely Fantastic!

This is why I buy Apple, beautiful packaging and ever so simple to set up. Plugged it in, turned it on all configured in under 5mins, printer works, speakers are brilliant and whats even better is the range! When purchasing I had no idea it included the option for 5ghz but it does and the performance and range are even higher!
Brilliant, absolutely fantastic, cant recommend it or apple enough.15 of 15 people found this useful

Very disappointing.

Can't make this product work reliably for AirTunes with latest Apple MacBook Pro, latest Mac OS (10.6 or 10.5) and Netgear RangeMax wireless router (latest firmware). Works for a while, then goes through period of frequent drop outs = unusable. Fixes involve tracking down system errors like -15006 and hours on router support sites and forums - great fun. Had more problems with this Apple product than any other Apple product in 20+ years as a Mac user.

Bad problems with airtunes
Written by JR from LANCASTER
30-Aug-2009
The things this little box does well, it does fine. But sadly it has a real problem with airtunes, dropping out chunks of sound to make it awful and unlistenable. Apple must address this problem soon, but until they do, this is definately NOT doing what it says on the box. Check out discussions to find out if and when it gets fixed, or forget about using it for music.

Okay but not quite what I was hoping for...

Not quite as seamless as you expect.... Device gets very hot and I wouldnt be happy leaving it switched on 24/7... I have lots of problems streaming music from my apple tv via airpot express to speakers in another room, sometimes it works and other times its "stop-start". My apple tv drops its wireless connection whenever this thing is on for a while and all in all its a bit of a hassle trying to work it all out.
Im sure some people have no problems, but I suspect many do...33 of 46 people found this useful

Could have gotten another star!
Written by CG from Falkirk

I had been reading up about this for a few weeks before convincing my dad that we should get one. I was a bit confused when my dad came in from work with the Airport Express because he said that he'd wasted his money on it. He told me it was because it wasn't a stand alone router you had to connect it to a wired router. So after messing around with the routers I got it connected to our old rubbish Talk Talk wireless router, and we were set up in about 5 mins.
I would have given the product 5 stars if the range was really 2X better, I can get a better range from the old Talk Talk router than I can from the Airport Express. The speed from the Airport Express is far better though!17 of 27 people found this useful

To all those having problems...
Written by NC from Sydney

...with the AirPort Express not being recognised after running the initial setup, try making the password you need to access it a little more complicated. I was initially using a six character password and kept having to reset it, as it couldn't be recognised. I found somewhere something saying that they should be between eight and something characters long, so I decided on another password, and haven't had a problem since.
There is zero documentation on this, nor a little 'Password not long enough' warning that comes up, but it seems to have fixed it =]:6 of 8 people found this useful

Excellent product, does exactly what I wanted!
Written by MS from Bristol

I purchased this today from an apple shop, and had it working the way I wanted in around 30 minutes.
I wanted to be able to stream music to a set of powered speakers and to share a reasonably old USB deskjet printer. At this point I'm not too concerned about extending my WLAN or using the airport as a standalone wireless router.
I did a very rare thing and actually read the instruction booklet first; it does help in this case!
After connecting the airport to the mains, I used the provided utility to join it to an existing WPA-encrypted wireless router (BT HomeHub) with no trouble at all.
Played around an hours worth of music with no drop-outs and the sound quality is excellent.
Sharing the printer was pretty straightforward, although bear in mind you need to install Bonjour on each machine you need to use the printer. Again, flawless operation.
Very happy with this purchase.21 of 23 people found this useful

Great little device!

I've wanted to buy one of these for years since when it first came out. Finally bit the bullet after buying a B&W Zeppelin speaker dock which I wanted to stream my MacBook Pro's iTunes collection to.
The AirPort express was pretty quick to set up, found my existing internet connection (O2 wireless broadband box) and acts as a client for airtunes & wireless printing.
I love that it can connect to my speaker system through digital optical cables for airtunes to be used.
Only downside is, I sometimes find it might cut out for a second or so every now and then when streaming music. Plus I wish it was slightly cheaper as these have been out for a while now.15 of 18 people found this useful

In reply to previous BT Home Hub Horror Stories
Written by BS from London
15-Jul-2009
I would like to reply to some of the previous horror stories about BT HH and Airport Express. After some initial trail and error it worked fine (i'm not very computer literate person). The guide is not great and could be a lot clearer - i know it's not the fashion, but a really detailed guide for this sort of thing cant be bad! Also, a bit disappointed that have to have an ethernet cable from Airport Express to BTHH. Maybe should have thought about this before, but means that BT Vision / Printer / Powered Speakers and BTHH have to all be in the same place (or have long leads or buy additional Airport Express's!) Otherwise, an expensive but very satisfying set up.

Surprisingly Great

Like one of the other reviewers, I got this as a replacement for a poorly performing BT Home Hub. I'm not very technically minded and having read some of the negative remarks about how difficult some people found it to set up, I was a bit worried about whether I would have problems. My only problem was was that I didn't realise that I would have to have a separate modem to make this work, assuming that my cable would go straight from my asdl filter into the AirPort. Luckily I had an old spare wired modem/router and cables and so I managed to overcome it and my wireless internet is back up and running within 10 minutes of unplugging the old Home Hub. Good stuff Apple!

Almost too seamless
Written by DH from PETERSFIELD

The key to getting Airport Express Base Station to work is to 1) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and 2) make sure you know what it is that you want to do! 3) AND BE PATIENT!! Like many people I am using a third-party wireless router (Netgear WGR614) to connect to a broadband cable modem. Wireless connection to the Internet was no problem but no way could I get my laptop to print documents wirelessly, hence the Airport Express Base Station purchase. Setting up still requires the user to make sure all the boxes are ticked. For instance, iTunes requires "Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes". But now that it's set up it works brilliantly. (Equipment: Intel iMac and aluminium MacBook OX 10.5.7)

I just bought this to stream music and play my XBOX where there is no LAN drop in the house. I have the 802.11N extreme and this coupled together as an extended network. It performs great. My only complaint is the dropouts sometimes.

I bought an Airport Express to stream music from my Macbook. It doesn't work. It does however work perfectly with my wife's XP Laptop, and even sounds amazingly good. I've trawled the internet forums looking for a solution, and this seems to have been a common problem since iTunes 8 came out. None of the suggestions I've tried make any difference. So I'm left with the ludicrous situation of having to share my iTunes library with my wife's Windows Laptop and streaming from there. Although this sounds good, what a rubbish solution, and how absurd to have to stream my Mac via WIndows. This problem been going on since September 2008, and there's still no fix from apple in June 2009. That really IS rubbish.

Hopeless

I had it for two weeks. I must have spent 10 hours trying to get it set up with my MacBook. The documentation is hopeless. I tried the reset three times, loaded the software twice, and the final outcome was that the mac kept saying it was unable to see any Apple devices at all. I took it back and got my money refunded. Interesting to note that others had similar experiences and I have to add this is completely contrary to all my previous experiences with Apple products. They need to sort it out and make it user friendly and do some thing with the documentation or on screen help.

I bought this mainly to allow me to stream iTunes into my house from my office in the garden. I was very impressed with the ease of setup and also the ability to extend my wired network in to the house via the ethernet port on the Express.
I am considering purchasing another to allow me to add a printer to my network for my kids to use in the house.

As with everything Apple this is an excellent product, works with my MacBook Pro, Iphone, friends ipod touch and my wife's Windows laptop with no problem at all. The Airtunes functionality is great (and works on both Windows and Macbook running itunes). Only problem I had setting this up was a little "over-eagerness" but when I stopped, reset everything then read the instructions BEFORE plugging everything in it worked great. Set-up couldn't have been easier using the utility already installed on my macbook. I'll be buying at least one more to use the Airtunes on additional Hi-fi's in the house.
