AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
Excellent,easy to use and reliable.

I have two of these, one providing wireless ethernet to my Xbox360 and the other providing audio to an amplifier in the dining room and which is also used as a wireless extender for the garden. I use 802.11n(only) setting on the 5GHz band connected to an Airport Extreme and I get solid reliable connections. Excellent, innovative device!

Airport Express dead after less than 2 years
Written by DD from FARNHAM
19-Jul-2008
Been happy with this for almost 2 years but woke up this morning to find completely dead! Reading discussion boards seems others have had this problem. No doubt Apple will stick two fingers up as officially out of warranty based on others comments. Don't want to have to buy another as it will probably suffer the same fate. Others have commented how they even bought two at the same time which both failed within a month of each other. A batch fault or generally bad product, you decide. Best of luck!

Good kit easy to set up.

I got this today to try to extend my wireless network to my front bedroom, i have always had problems getting a good signal to this room and have tried many routers but its never been good. My set up is an apple bass station for wireless N and a d-link for wireless G, the airport express found both routers and connection to both was easy and faultless.
It has resolved the problem with connection to the front room and has the added bonus
of giving me the airtunes in my bedroom. Easy to set up and use, another great bit of kit from Apple.9 of 10 people found this useful

Simply the best and easiest way of setting up a wireless network. Less than 5 minutes after taking the Airport Express out of the box all 5 computers in our house were using it to connect wirelessly to the internet! Plug the ethernet cable in, follow the set-up instructions in the Airport Express Utility and connect!

Rubbish

Don't waste your money on this if you already have a home network. It works great if you run it as a stand alone router but when you try to connect it to your exisitng secure (WEP) network it fails. The only way I could get it to work was to switch off my WEP encryption.

Not as good as I had hoped :o(

I've had this for a couple of weeks now and have worked out most of the niggles and marvelled at its redeeming features...
Good points
-Great for streaming music to remote speakers. Never dropped the signal with instant playback - it is exactly like having the stereo connected with a cable. 5/5stars
-Wireless printing works well and is only slightly slower than if connected via USB. 4/5 stars
Bad points
-Despite spending an hour with a 'Genius' in an Apple shop, we just couldn't get it to restart using WEP encryption. So now I use WPA and can't connect my work laptop to it wirelessly. 0/5 stars
-Multi function printers will only print wirelessly, meaning you can't scan, or fax unless you connect via USB to your computer. 0/5 stars
Overall, I don't think that the 65quid pricetag is justified and there is still some way to go before it gets to Apple's usual 5/5 star standard.
I remain committed but disappointed.79 of 101 people found this useful

I picked up my Airport Express on Thursday as I knew my Virgin Broadband router was being delivered on Friday. The AE worked straight out of the box with very easy setup, the wireless printing and airtunes are excellent. Once I had my broadband set up on my Laptop (running Vista) I plugged the Ethernet cable into the AE. It set up automatically but I could not access the internet. I google'd for set up tips and was amazed by the amount of support available (from the apple website and in particular other Mac users). After leaving the AE and router off for a while a switched it back on and it worked perfectly. As I have a small apartment the AE has more than enough signal strength to cover every room. After experiencing the easy of setup and quality of this apple product, I am saving up to get myself a macbook. I would recommend anyone investing in the apple range.

Excellent in combination with an Apple Base station

I have 4 of these in the G standard and 2 in the new N standard, all were really simple to add to my Network which is Now a 1TB time capsule.
Previously, I had a net gear N standard router, and they worked on that flawlessly as well. However, May house is an Edwardian building on 3 floors, so I Needed to boost my signal Wirelessly.
My previous set-up, I couldn't do this, as the router was bridged to the Time capsule, this caused compatibility issues. So after purchasing an Ethernet Modem, I reconfigured the network in 15 min's, now I have a full range of internet all around my house, My walls are all 1-2 feet thick, so this is an amazing achievement. this if used on an A Apple base station works Perfectly, you will have issues if used with third party Routers and such.
I can assure you, if you use an Apple Base Station (Airport Extreme or Time Capsule), you will get the Best results!13 of 24 people found this useful

Nice idea, but...
Written by MV from Manchester

...in reality its flawed. I can't fault it for being a printer server, or the airtunes feature. The big problem - and Apple need to change this page to make a big deal about this - is that it won't work as a wireless extender unless you have Apple Airport kit or a 3rd party wireless router that supports WDS. I'm thinking of a full N setup so in time this won't be a big deal, but right now its not value for money.

Never before, and never again will there be an easier or more practical way of creating wireless network. And to all this add the simplicity of the user interface (use the standard options if you do not want trouble). Have you ever tryed to stream music wirelessly, and do I dare to mention print wirelessly from any other companys device?
I guess not - because it's NOT possible. Only Apple does this today in one tiny device. I love and treasure it! PC world wake up!!!28 of 41 people found this useful

AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
Easier than expected
Written by AG from Weedon

After months of deliberation, I decided a few days ago to order an Apple Express. The sole purpose is to stream my iTune music from my PC (windows XP) located in the kitchen all the way to the stereo in the living room on the other side of the house, using my wireless network (I have a Belkin wireless card in the PC and a Belkin wireless modem/router which is actually situated on another floor of the house - long story)
The buying process on the Apple Store was easy enough and I was pleased to see the little package in the postbox when I arrived back home tonight. The question was: Shall I wait until the weekend to have a few hours ahead of me before I start the install or should I just give it a try tonight? I opted for the second option (I've never been known to be a patient man) and here I am, 30 minutes later, music blasting into the living room.
The steps I took:
1) Remove packaging
2) Plug airport to main and stereo (note: cables for the stereo connection are not included, you need to have your own or buy separetely)
3) Turn on computer and launch install CD
4) Launch Airport Programm (I downloaded latest upgrades in the process)
5) Stress a bit when Airport Express is not appearing in list of wireless network and setup is not getting anywhere
6) Turn Airport Express off then on again
7) Hurray, it's recognised! Follow the setup process
8) Launch iTune, select to stream on stereo speakers and it works !!! 30 minutes after opening the package.
It was easier than expected and I am a VERY happy man.

Fantastic piece of kit for playing tunes but so far I haven't managed to play movies or TV shows of any kind (even though sitting in iTunes library) so pretty disappointed overall since I could have saved a lit of money and hastle and just made the connection directly from stereo to computer. I read the review that it doesn't work thro Front Row and Leopard and I can cope with that ... I may return all iTunes library is not supported ...

Good, but a pain to set up.

I bought this primarily for AirTunes, and this is really good once you've got it set up. It's nice to be able to sprawl out on the bed with my MacBook, playing my iTunes library over the stereo system.
But the thing was so annoying to setup, I can only give it 3 stars. It seemed to connect to my wireless network ok at first, and then found firmware update 7.1.3, which is where everything went bad! After installing this update, I could not get the device to connect to my wireless network at all - it seemed to think it had, but it could not be seen by Airport admin utility. After hours of resetting it etc, I just took it back to PC World where they replaced it and the new one is fine (without the firmware update!!!!).
Apple stuff no longer seems to "just work". :(15 of 23 people found this useful

Works as intended but problem with firmware upgrade and Front Row support
Written by RG from London
24-May-2008
I bought this primarily for the AirTunes feature. However, I was unaware that AirPort Express and Front Row on Leopard are not compatible. You cannot stream audio content to remote speakers from Front Row which to me makes it a pointless piece of software. What's weird is older versions of Front Row support this!
Also, whenever I try to upgrade to the latest firmware (7.3.1) I lose the connection to my modem and the AirPort Base Station cannot be found. Other than that, running firmware (7.3) and AirTunes with iTunes, its great!

IF it works...
Written by AS from Woodford Green

It is, I'm sure, a great product if EVERYTHING you own has the perfect prerequisites, however...
1. It is not compatible with Xbox 360 wireless adapter - therefore needing to operate another wireless network, no problem HOWEVER:
2. It is not compatible with non-airport routers - it claims to be able to connect to another branded router but after joining the network Airport utility loses it, rendering it useless.
Used in isolation, fine - but it will not integrate with others.

Excellent

Just purchased for use in my new flat. My main reason for upgrading was for Air Tunes and wireless N functionality. Just plugged it into the wall and ran the Airport Utility on my macbook. After setting the APE to connect to my current network i had a slight hiccup at the reset stage where the Utility failed to see APE. However, this was quickly rectified as i thought the APE would now be connected to my current network (Belkin router). After connecting back to my old (Belkin) network, Air Tunes instantly popped up in iTunes on my mac and PC (thanks bonjour!). Sound quality seems fine over mini-stereo to RCA cable, though have not tried over digital (i imagine this would sound better). When playing music over Air Tunes my macbook has a network throughput of 120-170KB/s for audio.
Will soon be setting up the APE as my main router to gain full wireless-N speed!13 of 16 people found this useful
