Have had three of these units now (original one and two replacements). All have failed after around 12 months of use. Have now given up with the product.

Have to admit to being a little worried with regard to the set-up as a result of some of the horror stories here, but was pleasantly, no incredibly surprised at how easy this was. It took longer to get behind my hi-fi and find the right input to the amp than it did to run through the set-up! Amazing piece of kit, especially when combined with Remote on my iPhone - cool, slick and unimaginable just a few years ago.

    Well done Apple :-)

I've just connect my first but not last AirPort express and its brilliant. The setup is not easy, especially with the BT homehub that I have but after two calls to Apple support and one to BT we're up and running. I would now love to know how to connect my iTouch as other people have, any ideas?

    Great but VERY buggy

I set this up fine with my Airport Extreme mainly to stream music and after about a month it suddenly started throwing out errors. After disabling IPv6 it started working fine?!
There are lots of bugs either in the firmware or iTunes which can make it take ages to get going but when it is going it works a treat!

Airport Express with PC and BT Home Hub

    Written by AS from NORTHWICH

    26-Nov-2008

Well I have my AX configured just fine and it works perfectly. When setting up with the BT Home Hub make sure you set the BTHH to use WPA-PSK encryption. Connect the AX to the BTHH via and Ethernet cable first and use Airport Utility to manually setup the SSID and WPA key.

I'm sat back flicking through my iTunes Library via the remote app on my 3G iPhone!!

Slowly but surely I'm being converted. Well done again Apple.

Excellent product, but please Apple listen!

    Written by SL from Urmston

    21-Nov-2008

These are excellent. I have 2 and I am about to buy a 3rd. They work brilliantly and when combined with Remote on my iPod Touch, I now have a great set up. My laptop stays hidden in the cupboard, charging up, I have a network hard drive (also in the cupboard) and my router is there as well (not an Apple product). So everything is hidden away, but i can sit with my iPod and play anything from by library on my stereo in my dining room, or in my kitchen, or both. A couple of years ago, that would have needed thousands of pounds of cables, etc. to all be hidden.

But....Apple, please read how many people complain about the set up. Come on, its a simple device, just give us some clue on how to set it up and provide some reasonable instructions.

Works perfectly with pc and mac

Written by TV from Kgs. Lyngby

I bought the Airport Express a week ago and it works perfectly on my network consisting of both Mac's and PC's. I have tried several Belkin and Linksys wireless routers and have always had trouble staying connected with my notebooks (PC's). Now they just stay connected all over the house. At this moment my IBM Laptop (T61p) is connected with 99% signal strength and 144 Mbps where as it would previously be connected with 20-30 Mbps and around 40% signal strength.
And the configuration tool was a joy to use (took only 2 minutes to get everything up and running).
I strongly recommend the Airport Express for users who want a minumum of trouble and a maximum of pleasure using and setting up wireless networks.

    Help for non-Mac Users

    Written by JT from KIRRIEMUIR

    14-Nov-2008

Have used two of these excellent items for years, but they are tricky to set up on Windows.
Tips (If using a non-Apple Router)
    1) - Use Airport set-up Assistant - Set up New Airport Station (Must use ethernet cable)
    2) - Use Adimin Assistant to set up A/Express as client
    3) - If iTunes is seen and not heard, or if an error 3256 is displayed, there is a fix at Apple, which guides you through a firmware upgrade and reconfigure and - Hey Presto! - everything works.
(My Expresses are older. Perhaps the new ones are easier to set up in non-Apple gear)

Does exactly what it says on the tin

This tiny clean white device sits neatly out of site in a socket and does exactly what it should.

It has never gone down like routers of old, and works flawlessly with the printer.

It's also fun for playing music from your laptop to your speakers wirelessly.

    Range is surprisingly good too!

    Working fine.

    Written by RV from LONDON

Was worried if this would work with my new Virgin Media Cable Broadband, but it arrived this morning and I had it up and running within about 10 minutes. Pretty easy to use, with just one confusing moment to negotiate... (Using the Airport assistant you get to one point where it asks you to choose between two different gobblegook type options about what sort of internet connection you have... the one that worked for me was the default one at the top and the only box that needs filling in, I just left it blank) and everything just worked fine... Easy, again. And people wonder why we buy Macs!

    Time-consuming.

Written by KM from Dalgety Bay

    30-Oct-2008

As other have said, once this is set up it is great, however the troubleshooting support for the airport in the manual, and from apple is limited.

It took me a good 2 days of fumbling about with settings to get this thing to work, not like I had anything else to do.

I would recommend it as a product, but be wary of how complicated the set up can, and could, be.

Fantastic when you manage to get it set up correctly

    Written by AT from Manchester

    28-Oct-2008

I bought the unit as a wireless bridge for my Xbox using the Ethernet connection and to broadcast my iTunes library to the stereo without having to plug in my ipod. The only major problem is the set up can be difficult and there is not a lot of online help from Apple. I set it up originally using a Linxsys router which required a firmware update to allow WDS, painful and difficult in itself. Once I had updated the firmware it picked up the wireless network no problems. The pain really started when I changed over to a BTHomehub. No matter what I tried the box just wouldn’t see my homehub to set it up as a repeater. The only way I found to overcome this was to set it up as a basic wireless router with the box connected to homehub through the Ethernet, once you have set this up you can then detect the base station as a repeater in the homehub setup and complete the WDS repeater set up. To get started it is probably easier to start with WEP turned off and then gradually turn it on on both your homehub and then the base station, this way you know at which point you encountered problems.

its good but has flaws with lack of description above!!!

Written by ZS from Waltham Cross

    27-Oct-2008

initially i wanted to use this devise in my room and connect it to my surround sound speakers to play my songs through itunes over airtunes. but what the description fails to say is that you still need to connect an ethernet port to the base station in order to create a wireless network (even if you just want to play songs)! This will be great and very handy for when i go to university next year but for now when all i want to do is play my music, its a bit of hassle as i currently have to wire up an ethernet cable through the house to get to my plug socket! maybe even needing to drill a hole through the ceiling ha. Also another pointer, airport express can play songs ONLY in itunes, no movie/tv show files and neither can it play sound from other applications such as quicktime.

on the plus side, it works quietly in the corner and (when an ethernet cable is connected) is a very easy piece of equipment to set up as well as looking beautifully simple, especially if you have other white mac products nearby!!!!!

This product can EASILY be greatly improved!!!!!!!!!! i would put a 3.5 rating on this if i could but as i cant ill be nice! 4 star...

I bought an AirPort Express a couple of months ago, and it works really well.
I have an iTunes library on my iMac in my office, and now I can play all my music on my hifi in my living room. Even better, I can control what I listen to through my iPhone's Remote app. It's all rather cool.

I got mine working very quickly but more by chance than design. I had read several reviews saying that they die after 18 months. Mine is almost 18 months old and has now started to cut out mid-tune. More and more frequently it has to be unplugged and plugged back in again along with wireless hub to resume normal function. Looks like its untimely demise is imminent.

Does precisely what it says +++ more, therein lies the beauty and simplicity of owning Apple equipment. Can't believe the other folks have such a "grind" setting up this piece of amazing gear?

If you need it and want it, BUY IT...

Thanx and keep up the good work...

AirTunes and Apple's Remote application for the iPhone

I bought this simply for the AirTunes and I'm not disappointed.

Connected to my stereo and teamed up with Apple's Remote application for the iPhone this has made listening to music an absolute pleasure. Straight out of the box, plugged in... ran the Airport utility from my iMac, updated the firmware, set a name and password, job done working perfectly.

I've only been a Mac guy for a year, and never ceased to be amazed how easily Apple stuff just works.
This time it's an AirPort Express, to enable me to stream music to a surround sound system and to use a printer from both a MacBook and an iMac (both running Leopard 10.5.5).
It just worked! Straight-forward to configure as well.
Actually, the only bit that was a problem was the AirPort Utility on the MacBook - just got an error saying that the app wasn't for this architecture - but that wasn't the fault of the AE. Got around the problem by copying the app across from the MacBook!
Now just need an iPhone to act as a remote control for iTunes :)
