AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
a real pain to setup but brillant when done
Written by BW from Hagley
19-May-2009
As many of these reviews mention it is a real pain to set up. The manual is rubbish and the software shipped does not help to sort the connection problems.
I got this a year ago and could not get it to work, but got it out of the draw and took 2 hours to try and get it sorted.
The problem I had was that mine did not like to connect or even show up through WEP I had to change the wireless network to WPA2. I then manually told my router to connect to it. Once that had happened I could pick it up on my mac and it was straight forward from there. The different speakers show up in itunes and it connects each time I turn it on.
Another cool feature is I downloaded the remote software (free) on my iphone so can change the music where ever I am in the house. The iphone connects to itunes on the mac and the mac connects to the airport which in turn is connect to my surround sound kit, pretty impressive at dinner parties.
My advice get it, but clear a two hour window to get it all set up.

Connectivity Issues.
Written by TK from Lewes
17-May-2009
This is a brilliant concept with a fantastical executed product. However, there are some problems.
I love being able to play my music wirelessly around my house, it's novel and incredibly practical also. Whilst this should be a simple install and play job, it isn't. Whilst the configuration is harmless, the provided documentation is inadequate and a basic knowledge of wireless networking is required. Not a problem for me.
The idea behind the product is that I should be able to listen to my music wirelessly around the home without interruption. Not the case. The status light reliably starts flashing orange to highlight connectivity issues during regular use. This requires the simple turning off and on of the device to reboot, but when the idea is that you can install this behind a dresser or desk then forget about it, then the concept fails. You shouldn't have to constantly attend to it whilst in use.
No other wi-fi devices in the house have these issues, so it's not the home network.12 of 17 people found this useful

Disappointing

It wasn't straightforward to set up the wizards use too much network terminology in places, but you can get up and running. I had some problems with security settings. Data transfer as also quite slow, even though my computer was less than 2m away from the base station. Main problem was that the unit failed just over a year after I purchased it (nice piece of engineered obsolescence?).So looks pretty, but hasn't lasted.

I purchased AirPort Express with the view of streaming iTunes around my house. Unfortunately, after almost 7 hours of trying to set this thing up, I've given up and am taking it back. It just seems impossible to connect this thing up. First of all, the documentation is inadequte to say the least and doesn't help in any way. Secondly, every time I restarted the process and got an error message, the error code was different making it difficult to diagnose the problem. Apple need to be really careful here. For me, Apple are a company that produce powerful but usable technology. Unfortunately, the last two products I've purchased (this and the Macbook) have been rubbish (the Macbook still randomly shuts down after 10 mins). I for one will be keep clear of Apple products in the future as I always end up frustrated and disappointed. Just for the record, I would have posted this review earlier but I've spent the last 2 hours trying to get my home network up and running again after the failed AirPort installation caused that to fail for some unknown reason.

Good wireless range but no iPhone/iPod charging any more
Written by CC from LONDON
06-May-2009
The Airport Express is an excellent product overall, especially for use with iTunes.
I recently upgraded my router to Airport Extreme and found out that my old Airport Express's no longer worked with extending the wireless network. A clever way to get users to upgreade i presume.
I bought a new Airport extreme to use with the 'n' network, but found out that the new units will not charge iPhones etc from the USB port any more. A feature that older units had. This makes the new unit it a little less usable, especially for travelling, as you need an iPhone charger aswell, not just a cable.
A good product over all, but sad to see the powered USB port has gone.24 of 26 people found this useful

I bought my Airport Express this morning and having set it up, I can quite honestly say that it's amazing. I have a Bose Portable unit and 8GB Nano and it's turned into a bit of a pain having to refill the Nano everytime I want to listen to a song that's not on it. Now I can just listen to it through the Airport! It's made my life so much easier. The setup is a dream...really easy and user friendly. The product itself is totally discrete and works perfectly. Really, Apple is absolutely amazing at product innovation and blows me away with every new product I buy. I'm talking my Mum into getting one as well. Well Done Apple!!!!!

Brought this the other day for the intention of wireless music stream, connected it to the hifi downstairs, with the imac upstairs, works fantastic. Even better with the ipod touch acting as a remote device. Very clever and quite a cheap option to stream music throughout the house.

I used this to extend the range of my Time Capsule.
Easy to setup 5/5 as it couldn't be any simpler than it was!
Performance is good, but it does slow down the backup slightly to my TC from my MBP.
I can get 54Mbs and excellent signal strength on the older laptops running over wireless g (up from 11Mbs direct to the TC with poor signal strength).
Haven't used any of the other features as it does what I need as a range extender.13 of 14 people found this useful

Good idea that just does not want to work.
Written by DM from Worcester
19-Apr-2009
I got this so I could stream music to some speakers in my flat. I have a unibody MBP and a 3rd party router.
I ran through the setup and it all seemed to be ok, but iTunes keeps giving me an "unknown error (-15000)" with no hint as to what the problem might be.
I have managed to get it to work with iTunes and then it will just stop and give me the error again. I get better uptime by using Airfoil by Rouge Ameba which indicates that it is configured correctly and does work, otherwise it would be going back to the shop.
Looking online it seems that it works great for some people and not for others. Sadly I am the latter.

Wireless Problems Sorted with AirPort Express
Written by JN from London

I had so many troubles using my MacBook with my Sky Wireless router. Using multiple locations for work and home, my MacBook had problems connecting to my existing router. By connecting the router to AirPort Express with an ethernet cable my wireless now works brilliant.
I would recommend this product if you are having troubles with connection. It is also useful when going on vacation or business trips. I take my AirPort with me and create a wireless network wherever i go.

Bought this in conjuction with Time Capsule for 3 reasons.
1> Extend PS3 network (this was my number one requirement). I was getting awful Wireless connectivity back to my Netgear. Now I connect the PS3 to the Ethernet on the Airport express and 802.11n back to my Time Capsule (then onto my netgear for the internet)
2> Air tunes from my imac to my Denon Amp/speakers.
3> Needed a backup Hard Drive so points 1 and 2 introduced time capsule. (dont use time machine as I run Tiger not Leopard).
I can now download PS3 demos and games at a much faster speed and at the same time stream over air tunes with no loss in quality. Ever so impressed. More impressed with the itouch remote control too.
Haven't had too much time to tinker, but I need to work out why the express goes offline when the base station (time capsule) is turned off then on.

Bought previous incarnation of this product. Read instructions and didn't think I could connect to a non airport extreme network. But yesterday let my youngest boys have my old PPC mac mini for their bedroom; alas no wifi card so no internet. Took a chance connected ethernet cable to Airport express, plugged it in, and hey-presto internet.
No setting up, straight on the network!!!!!!

Absolutely love this!! Been meaning to buy it for ages, and finally got round to purchasing it. Money well spent. Set up within 5 minutes.. As with anything Apple, "It Just Works."
I have a mac and there was literally no set up, as soon as you plug it in, your mac finds it and i got it to join my existing network. iTunes automatically sees it as a speaker option (if you have it connected to a speaker).
I did have the Philips Streamium system which is about £700. However this product partnered with good quality speakers is so much better and less than quarter the price.9 of 10 people found this useful

Party Tricks!
Written by BB from Macclesfield
29-Mar-2009
I bought this from my local Apple Store in Manchester for a housewarming party I was throwing. Absolutely excellent for AirTunes. My mates were loving the fact I could control the playlist from my iPhone using the 'Remote' application, to control iTunes which then of course went via the Airport Express to my speakers.
It was up and running in just a matter of minutes and plugged into my JBL Spot system there is no delay whatsoever, and the quality is excellent.
This now means I don't have to sit in the same place with my Macbook wired up to some rubbish speakers - I've got excellent quality music playing, and I can roam around my flat with my Mac - excellent product and well worth the money!
4 star rating because I've not had chance to use the printing element of this, and it's unlikely I will do for some time!9 of 12 people found this useful

A great little device
Written by MC from Armadale

Have you ever wondered whether to buy a new modem router or not. Using this the answer is definitely not. Having a wireless-N capable macbook, six months ago I used Airport Express into my 54g modem router. It was less than half the cost of a Wireless N modem router and gives extra range and great signal strength in all corners of the house.
Since then I have been able to change broadband providers and utilised not have to pay extra to them for their wireless-N kit if they even have the option! Yet more cost savings! And as the Apple blurb suggests when you set up this little beauty once you never need to set it up if you do change routers! Bonus!!!!
I am giving this product 5 stars and thats before I have even fully the other aspects of it.
So it was worthwhile just for those aspects and I haven't even started using it as a music point or for wireless printing!!! In my opinion, this little beauty pays for itself and is really easy and worthwhile to set up.4 of 5 people found this useful

DO NOT BUY ANY MAC NETWORK DEVICE
Written by JN from Reading
26-Mar-2009
Mac products are generally very good but there network devices are terrible, I sent a time capsule back. now I am on the brink of replacing my two airport express devices after upgrading to 7.4.1.
Yes they have great features, and you think wow I would really like to listen to music in different rooms, print and go back to my home computer. If they worked or even consistently appeared and did not drop the connection every day or sometimes twice a day. Version 7.3 was not too bad at least once it had dropped the connection it would pick it up again.
I recommend thinking seriously before investing in these products. In fact think belkin, think netgear... think two cups and some string, if you want a decent network.
I am not alone and you should not join me, simply search the web to see how poor this product is.
