    Airport Express a bit misleading...

    Written by SB from torrington

    22-Sep-2008

I bought new powered speakers, and then the Airport Express (after phone consultation with Apple). Plugged it in--worked straight away! But then disconnected itself. We could get it to work IF we reset the unit, re-installed the unit, disconnected the wireless Belkin modem and reconnected it. All a bit of a to do. Spent several hours trying to sort it, then a couple more with Apple support people only to be told that 'sometimes it just doesn't work, so best to send it back.' That seemed so lame to me, that I phoned Belkin to see if they could help, but no. Phoned back to Apple to try another support person. After another hour or so, was ultimately told the same thing. Sometimes it just doesn't work with some wireless modems! Have sent it back, and received refund, but am still disappointed about time wasted and mystified by an Apple product that doesn't work!

    Product failure

    Written by DK from Bristol

I was as pleased as can be with my Airport Express until it mysteriously failed 18 months after purchase (Just out of warranty). I couldn't find my proof of purchase as I had recently moved house. At the time I found whole websites full of folk who had experienced similar problems.

    Airport Express = Brilliant!

Plug it in, connect printer and or speakers, turn it on. Follow the instructions using Airport Utility and it works. Brilliant. Don't be put off by people whingeing about this product not doing what they wanted. If you read the product info it tells you what it does. If you want it to do something else - don't buy it and then complain!!

I have two AE, one in my living room and one in my conservatory. It's brilliant that I can stream music to either or both and I haven't had a single problem with it. Bedroom speakers are next.....

Great, but you can spend hours configuring.....

......if you are trying to join a WEP encrypted wireless network. So if you have a BT Home Hub or such, then you will have to change the encryption on the hub to something other than WEP. It's a real pity that the documentation doesn't tell you this - several hours of frustration and a trawl of the net leads you to that piece of wisdom. Then it works instantly.

    Almost everything i needed...

    Written by JL from TURKU

    09-Sep-2008

First problem I encountered was with mac-address. I'm in university network, so I can use only one mac-address at a time. I can live with that and problem disappears when my studies end.

But the biggest disappointment was AirTunes. I can't control volume with my Remote or with volume control keys. And it would be nice to use remote speakers with other programs, DVD player or Front Row. Now Airtunes gives you just a taste from what you would want.

So I bought Airfoil wich is a great program but costed me 25 dollars. Airfoil unlocks AE:s full usability, without it is not worth of it's price.

Still, with AE I can connect with 802.11n-speed to my MacBook and it looks nice. Usually base stations are awfully ugly. And with some basestations, I have encountered problems. Apple works with Apple.

I did not connect my printer to AE. But I will and that's a nice option for laptop users. Not too much USB-ports in MacBook.

Great...once you get it set up!

Bought this a few days ago and it arrived today so went to set it up. Not as easy as I thought it would be (for some reason with a PC and a BT Home Hub I would recommend going through the Manual set up) but got it working. Am using this with a set of powered speakers and iTunes controlling with Apple Remote (free app) on the iPhone 3G. Amazing to use and can now stream music in my bedroom easily and best of all.....it's very, very cool to control from the phone! Love it and would definitely recommend!

Just so thrilled to hear music fly!

    Written by TS from Edgeworthstown

Despite an extensive pre-purchase research, I was still a bit afraid if this item would bring a perfect solution to my music-anywhere blue print. After the simple steps, I have got iTunes music streamed to the speakers in my bedroom, very stable, without a problem. You do need to check beforehand that your networking configuration is correct for the mode you want to use it for. Although its feature examples focus on wireless modes, it can also go wired as just another node on the LAN. Now you can enjoy music more freely for less with this little box and the impressive iPod Touch Remote app.

Got it, wondered if it was a replacement adapter for my MacBook, but that was a big larger than the MacBook adapter, so became quite clear. Well ...

Got it, Opened it, TRIED, to set it up, had problems as all i wanted to do was use it for wireless printing, and during the set up, i had no idea i had to join it to my current network, Spent half an hour on the phone to someone who clearly had no idea what he was doing, went through the setup process 3 times, i kinda felt that he was keeping me on the phone for some reason. but once set up it works well, although doesn't stream so fast with AirTunes, but that may be from my Network Conjestion. Recommend to anyone.

Had to go out and buy an Airport Extreme base stations to get it to work as wouldn't work with my previous Link-sys router wirelessly or via ethernet! Once had set up new airport extreme it worked a doddle, just used the Airport Utility and it worked straight away wirelessly. Sound quality is good, I'm sure if i bought some expensive cables i could get it sounding a bit better but now I'm just being pedantic. Still a great product, as long as it works with your router!

The worst product I have ever bought

    Written by KP from London

    14-Aug-2008

I think I must have a 'dud'... my Airport Express hasn't really worked since I bought it. It constantly 'reports problems', mainly it doesn't know that the ethernet cable is plugged in... it's a brand new cable, I've tested 3 others with it, it just can't see them. It also keeps reporting that it has an invalid IP address and it doesn't seem to update either. It's fine one minute and not the next. If it does decide to work the connection is so slow as to be unusable. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with this product and from what I've read on the support forums I'm not the only one. I will be taking it back to where I bought it for a refund and investing in something else.

    My Magic White Box!

    Written by DT from Bristol

    12-Aug-2008

I bought an Airport Express both to use AirTunes when at home and create a wireless network when at university - it has surpassed expectations on both counts!

Despite worries after some negative reviews here, the AirPort took less than five minutes to set up. I have a home network connecting a number of PCs around a LinkSys router. I just popped the ethernet cable in and the AirPort retrieved all network information, IPs and added me seamlessly to the network.

AirTunes works a dream, I've never had so much as a stutter as the music streams; its response to changing track is instant. All in all this is a wonderful piece of kit to complement any Mac.

I bought this to stream itunes to my bedroom (my imac is downstairs) I am really impressed with this little unit, it was easy to setup (following the simple instructions) and took about 10 minutes, the sound quality is great and with my ipod touch and the the free itunes remote app I can control itunes from my bedroom as well. I've set an alarm in ical to play a bird song mp3 in itunes which then streams it to my bedroom and wakes me up :)

What a smart bit of kit!
So easy to set up, in fact; it was set up and working on an Apple Time Capsule based network before the kettle had boiled. I've now got two of them and streaming tunes all over the house (much to my neighbors dismay). It's so compact I even take one with me when I stop away from home.
    Another classic genius Apple product.

Not quite what it says on the box

    Written by ME from Uxbridge

    31-Jul-2008

I bought Airport Express to extend my network and to play Air Tunes over some additional speakers in my house. However, since the Apple advertisement says that Airport Express could act as a base station for "up to 10 computers" I thought I would give it a go and replaced an old faithful USR8054 router. Part of the reason was also that I was having trouble getting my i-Touch to talk to the network as advertised and thought it might have been a router problem.

Initially, it all worked OK with one computer on the wireless network and my i-Touch. However, when an Apple iMac Notebook and then a Dell Windows PC came online, the Airport Express could not cope. Airport Express is no good as a base station for more than one computer. It cannot deal with the data stream and keeps dropping off. There are also limits on its range.

I have put the USR 8054 Router back and am just using 2 Airport Express units to extend the range of Air Tunes. After some fiddling around, i-Touch is behaving itself, Air Tunes works fine and the entire wireless network is OK.

In sum, naughty Apple; Airport Express does not do what it says on the box. It is fine as a network extension and for Air Tunes, but it really is not good as a wireless network base station for anything other than a simple one computer set up.

    Not happy!!!

    Written by CS from leeds

    31-Jul-2008

I brought this last week and works fine for internet yet when playing itunes the songs cut out every 10 seconds for 2-5 seconds making it un-listenable. Spent about an hour on the phone to apple support and they only talked me threw things i had already tried from reading the support/disscusions pages, at the end the only advice they had was you might have to buy another to boost the signal.

has anyone else had this problem and fixed it, i have tried changing channels, soft rebooting, hard rebooting, moving the base station, any ideas please?

Would have given it full 5 stars if airtunes had of work!

I have two of these, one providing wireless ethernet to my Xbox360 and the other providing audio to an amplifier in the dining room and which is also used as a wireless extender for the garden. I use 802.11n(only) setting on the 5GHz band connected to an Airport Extreme and I get solid reliable connections. Excellent, innovative device!

Airport Express dead after less than 2 years

    Written by DD from FARNHAM

    19-Jul-2008

Been happy with this for almost 2 years but woke up this morning to find completely dead! Reading discussion boards seems others have had this problem. No doubt Apple will stick two fingers up as officially out of warranty based on others comments. Don't want to have to buy another as it will probably suffer the same fate. Others have commented how they even bought two at the same time which both failed within a month of each other. A batch fault or generally bad product, you decide. Best of luck!
