Networking perfection
Written by AD from HOLYWELL

This machine has blown me away... in its first 15 mins! I got more than I thought I was buying. Let me try and explain........
I just wanted to stream my music to my hi-fi and wasn't 100% sure whether I could do it, without connecting this directly to the router; with an ethernet cable. Despite reading tonnes of reviews before purchase. Let me clarify, you can, in fact the manual has a number of flexible set up options. But if you do connect it to an existing wired/wireless router or modem its even better.
I had.....
Talk talk Wireless router 54g.
Belkin USB hub with my printer and a 160gb Lacie HDD (for Time Machine) hanging off it.
I read the instructions (5mins - very well written). Plugged in ethernet cable, lead for hifi and I took the printer out of the Belkin hub and plugged it into this too. Turned on the power and booted up the Mac.
Setup couldn't have been easier. Despite a couple of configuration error messages, which simply required an 'either/or' answer. It worked perfectly. I now have an always on N network with increased range (wireless on the old router is off). Music streaming and better printing flexibility.
On top of that, I plugged my belkin hub back into the old router and now, I've got time machine running on a N network too!!
Absolutely over the moon. Best 64 quid I spent on a PC accessory. This is why I am now an Apple advocate. Simple perfection.
Checked with the other Mac's and PC's in the house and they all connect up to the network exactly the same as they did before AND itunes sees the speakers plugged into it so they can stream music to the hi fi too. Only theirs will be High School musical and Mamma Mia! (groan).26 of 27 people found this useful

A Genius Gadget
Written by SS from London

I recently bought an AV receiver to get the best possible sound from every input source. After wiring the obvious dvd, sky etc. I wanted to run my Ipod touch through it. The obvious way is to connect it straight to the receiver so what ever is playing on the ipod plays though the amp. The problem with this is you have to keep getting up to change songs and pause etc. Unitl i discovered the Air port express. This is very cool. Easy to install software which links straight in to your wireless network and it plugs straight in to your AV Receiver. If you do have an Iphone or I pod Touch then download the remote application. This will then link into your Itunes libery which will hold far more music than the average ipod and you have a complete wireless sound system. Very handy for partys etc.

Excellent when it works - three have failed after a year of use

The Airport express is excellent when it works - but it does appear to have a high failure rate after a years use. Always just outside warranty.
Lets hope the new 'n' series have a longer life.8 of 8 people found this useful

Absolutely Awesome!

I bought one of these to stream music from my home office into my lounge. The addition of being able to control my entire iTunes library from my iPhone, I just can't think of a way they could make it better! I can also have the music playing in the office (which is next to my dining room) and the lounge simultaneously which is great for parties!
I've found that I've also been able to link my Xbox 360 upto it using a ethernet cable cable which is fantastic as microsoft (robbing ????????) want £50 odd quid for a wireless adapter just to go online.
I'll definitely buy another one of these for my bedroom to stream the music upstairs as well! Well worth the money.3 of 3 people found this useful

Joins existing non-Apple WiFi for AirTunes music streaming
Written by MS from Shaftesbury
29-Dec-2008
I bought this primarily to use for streaming music to my HiFi from iTunes.
I have an existing wireless network (Netgear ProSafe WiFi Access points), so this product wouldn't be used to further extend my 'wireless blanket'.
What I required was for the AirPort Express to connect to my existing WiFi as a sort of client - this worked!
All I did was this:
- Plug in the AirPort Express into a wall socket
- Install the AirPort Express Utility that comes with it (Mac or PC)
- Configure the AirPort to "Join a wireless network"
- DONE!
This means that you can use the Express to stream music wirelessly from your computer's iTunes anywhere you can pick up a wireless signal.
Great product, shame you can't use the Remote Application on the iPod touch/iPhone to wirelessly stream music from there to Express (has to be from iTunes to Express)9 of 11 people found this useful

Ethernet modem needed
Written by PK from London
29-Dec-2008
Nothing in this long description tells you that you also need a compatible modem to create a wireless network. On the contrary, you are told that setting up a wireless network is easy and that you only need a compatible computer. My existing USB modem doesn't work with the Airport Express. I'll need to buy an ethernet modem, which is around the same price as a basic wireless router/modem. £65 seems to have bought me very little extra functionality.

Airport + iPhone + Remote = Killer App
Written by JW from London
28-Dec-2008
The best way to distribute music arrond the house. I can now play music in my kitchen from my PC located in another room using my iPhone and the Remote application (from the app store).
I cannot over state how useful this is. The iPhone Remote app gives me miles more control than any other streamer I have used.
I am not a serial reviewer of stuff but this little box has really made my day. -Buy one!
Setup was a breeze and using a wired network I have had no music stuttering at all.
I have not used the printer port or the wireless capability. -This is a music only review!6 of 6 people found this useful

I work in a Technical Help-desk as technical advisor for 3G and networking with phones/iphones/iphone 3G extra a- I know a fair bit of networking - Trust me I found this hard to set up - When attempting to make a new network the router would not respond - after spending nearly 5 hours, yes 5 hours i located the issues to software configuration and my new Apple Mac Book simply not responding to the instructions my Apple would give to the Router - finally when I got it working its brilliant !!! itunes to my new Bow Zepplin speakers awesome - Excellent range - Brilliant delivery service from Apple - Good customer care - just wished that Apple engineers spend time in full proofing product testing and please make software much easier to understand and use if i was not good at networking I would have been dead!

Airport Express failure at 18 months
Written by DN from DONCASTER
27-Dec-2008
My APX (Airport Exoress) failed this morning and I have been researching the net to discover that '000's of these units have gone down at around 18 months old. (The age mine has reached).
My Apple store (Meadowhall) seem unaware of this problem. Why?
I HAVE BEEN APPLE'S BEST SALESMAN TO MY FRIENDS UNTIL NOW!
Apple should get a grip on this issue and freeissue new items to replace all those that have failed. Meanwhile what m I am supposed to do? Push more hard earned cash to Apple for a replacement?11 of 13 people found this useful

Reliable!
Written by JA from Mansfield
25-Dec-2008
Hmm...I have owned the original b/g Airport Express for around 4-5 years now, and have not suffered any of the reliability problems encountered by others.
It's a fantastic device which I initially used as a router, but now use every day for AirTunes distribution. Coupled with iPhone, and Remote - this is a rock solid combination which, for me, has proved very reliable.5 of 5 people found this useful

Failed out of warranty
Written by GF from Wimbledon

I have had three of these now and each has failed, the last two just out of warranty, so overall i am not very happy and would be hard pushed to recommend these.Of the two i have left one is completely dead and the other lights up but wont do anything. I was using them for airtunes, joining my network and using them to send music around the house.

Great Product
Written by SW from COVENTRY
16-Dec-2008
Having read other reviews I was unsure about the reliability of this product, I have however been using an airport express for nearly 2 years without any issues. I have lost the wireless signal in the past but have found that turning the router and airport off and back on fixes this. I have my stereo plugged into the airport and use itunes to steam music around the house whilst using my ipod touch as a remote control. For £65 this item is a must have.

I read on here about peoples difficulties setting these up but being quite tech savvy I thought it would be easy. Unfortunately not, took me 4 and a half hours solid to finally figure it out but when it did it worked brilliantly. I now want one foir every room in the house!

Perfection in Miniature
Written by NM from LEYLAND
12-Dec-2008
Had one of these for around 12 months now and it has been superb. An Apple TV took it's place in the lounge, and it's now upstairs still doing a sterling job. Buy one for a few rooms and you have an excellent set up for parties with zero latency. For the reviewer from London who asked about using his iPod Touch. Just download Apple Remote from the app store and you're good to go. I've only ever used it for airtunes but it's worth every penny just for that. Buy one, or two!

Super Cool
Written by RS from East Meon
09-Dec-2008
Can't comment on its reliabilty yet as I only installed it last night. Some have said that they are tricky to set up but I found it a doddle. I did read the set up pamphlet first though. I'm only using it to stream music from my pc running Itunes, remotely controlled by my iphone. I've got a belkin router and I joined the airport expres to that network. Here's how.
Plug it in. Slip in the cd into your pc, no need to connect a cable to the airport.Follow the instructions -reading the options carefully as its easy to pick the wrong thing if you're not. I simply joined mine to the existing network and changed its name. I updated the software which it offered to do (be careful to pick the right software to download). It restarted. Plug in a mini jack to phone lead, plug that into your hifi. Open Itunes, share your library and make sure in the preferences/devices it says look for remote speakers connected with airtunes. Now pick the airport express to play your music to (bottom left). You will now be able to play music and it'll come out of your hifi. Cool, cooler when you remote control your itunes with your iphone. Have fun6 of 6 people found this useful

I have had two and each one has stopped working after about one year. I guess I have to bite the bullet and buy another as I am not well enough informed to find a reliable alternative.

No More Wires Thanks To The White Box
Written by JP from Knutsford
07-Dec-2008
Bought this to get rid of the cable running from my front door to my netgear router, tried to sort out wireless over the phone to my internet provider but it never actually worked. So went to the apple store in Manchester and bought one of these, got home, un-boxed it and within 5-10 minutes i was wireless. I still have a cable plugged in but its now upstairs and underneath the carpet with my netgear hidden behind my desk, finally i can sit anywhere in my house and be wireless without having to move my router and cable around with me, YAY.
I would go out and buy one of these, go now!!!!3 of 3 people found this useful
