    Don't Panic Buy Just Yet!

    • Written by from Motherwell

I've never written a review before but felt I had to share my experience with others.

I stumbled across the other reviews as I was on the Apple Store to buy a new mouse as I had become fed up with the rollerball sticking. I could scroll up but down was a no go and had been for weeks/months. I was so glad I read the reviews before wasting £40 on a new one!

There are a few suggested solutions for cleaning the ball however I went for the multi surface disposal cleaning wipe solution (as I already had the wipes under the sink!). I unplugged the mouse and rolled the ball back and forth along the cloth and after no time at all, the mouse is as good as new - albeit smelling with a hint of lemon!

With the rollerball sorted and an easy solution at hand, I'd give the mouse 5 stars. The ball does clog with the moisture and oil from your hand and I've now learned regular cleaning is required. I agree with other posters that the lead is short however that suits me as I have the keyboard with the mouse USB port at the right hand side. If you are looking for a mouse that requires a longer lead, I would suggest looking at something else.

Many thanks to the earlier posters whose efforts saved me money! :-)

    Scroll Ball Is FINE

    • Written by from Leeds

I've been using this mouse for about four years now and never had a problem with the scroll ball, it's called cleaning your mouse. I just clean it with a small towel after I've dried my hands, obviously the ball will stop working if you constantly use it with dirty hands, but It's only a quick clean away from working.

    Apple Mouse Ball not working

    • Written by from Hampton

This is a good mouse but I found that inverting it and rolling it around on paper does not always get the ball working. The ball would scroll up but not down. I asked the staff at the Kingston Apple store and they said they had the same problem.
I read a suggestion to use a split drinking straw to clean the ball but
I have just tried using a small artist's paint brush to clean the clearance space around the ball using isopropyl alcohol. I applied this fairly liberally and then inverted the mouse, rolled it around on clean paper and then blew it dry with a photo clean air can. It now works perfectly. Don't overdo the alcohol, though!
I use this mouse for film editing in Final Cut and it works perfectly and is easy to use.

    Put away the screwdriver!!

    • Written by from Aberdeen

I love my Apple Mouse, wouldn't be without it.

I just read a review on here suggesting that if the scroll ball stops working, you should prise it apart with a screwdriver =[ Step away from the sledgehammer, people...

If the scroll ball stops working, you can make the perfect cleaning tool using a drinking straw and a pair of sharp scissors. Make two half-inch lateral cuts in the end of the straw so you have two tiny gutter-shaped pieces of plastic; bend one up out of the way. Use this tool to gently clean around the ball. You can dip the straw in nail varnish remover first if your mouse gunk is particularly gunky. Happy scrolling =]

    Fine by me

    • Written by from London

Once you learn how to clean the mouse properly; for example, once a month a quick squirt of pressurised air duster and turn the mouse upside down and rub the scrolling pip over a lint free cloth, I have not had one problem with this mouse. It feels just right in the hand and is quite accurate. Of course, being an Apple aficionado I'm slightly biased; however, give me this mouse anytime over the dreadful magic mouse.

    No problems with scroll ball

    • Written by from Borris

I don't understand how the scroll ball is clogging for so many people. I've had mine for nearly 2 years now, absolutely no problem, is as responsive scrolling now as the day it came out of the box. Maybe if people didn't use it whilst stuffing their faces with potato chips and chocolates and cola all day then the scroll wheel would be ok.... Apple can't legislate for peoples hygiene. If you keep your hands relatively clean (and I don't mean hypochondriac clean, I just mean wash them after meals and using the toilet) then the scroll ball will give you no problems at all.

    "It just works"

    • Written by from Leicester

I don't know what the fuss is about regarding the scroll ball. I've been using the same mouse daily since April 2006 and I've never had to clean the scroll ball.

It meets the Apple statement of "it just works".

The only quibble I have is that after nearly 5 years use I've noticed that the cable casing is beginning to wear at the usb connector.

with a bit of DIY all can be sorted - 3 years old now and going strong

    • Written by from Warlingham

I've got mine since 2007 (three years now) and has been very good so far.
In fact the small wheel has stopped working for a couple of occasions but I managed to take it apart and very carefully clean the very small parts that form the mechanism.
It's really not rocket science and anyone with a bit of patience can do it.

    Pure Anarchy!!!

    • Written by from CHESTERFIELD

This is a great mouse for both Mac and PC, yes, the apple mighty mouse works on PC with its full features! I've tested it! Of course it also works a treat on Mac! The apple magic mouse is another outstanding product for mac, however on PC you don't get its full features as windows can't cope with the touch gestures without illegally downloading some drivers, which isn't a good idea! For a magic mouse to 'part' function on a PC, you will need bluetooth. An issue that has been brought up with the mighty mouse is the scroll ball clogging. This can easily be resolved by flipping the mouse over and rolling it back and forth, side to side on a clean sheet of paper! If you only own a PC get the mighty mouse. If you own a Mac get the magic mouse!

    Mouse trackball cleaning

    • Written by from ANTRIM

I read the review about cleaning the trackball on a clean sheet of paper some time ago.
I was a bit dubious, but when my trackball stopped working I tried it. Guess what, it worked perfectly!
There have been a number of reviews complaining that the trackball sticks and cannot be cleaned. This is obviously not the case as the paper trick seems to work reliably.

I TRIED THIS,I was getting very flustrated IT SAVED ME £35 I WAS ABOUT READY TO BUY A NEW MOUSE, IT REALY WORKS. I'm very Grateful

READ THIS if scrollwheel not working
Written by NT from Charlbury 07-Jan-2008
OK, granted, there is a flaw in the design of this mouse, but I bet 90% of mice problems can be solved like this:

    1. unplug the mouse from the keyboard
    2. turn it upside down
    3. roll the scrollwheel in all directions on a blank (clean) piece of paper, in all directions, for 60 seconds
    4. re-attach

bingo! works every time. this is a good mouse in both OS X and Windows, I have used it for gaming and is excellent for browsing large webpages or large documents, with its 360 degree scrollwheel. although at times i want to get away from the mouse/keyboard combo (it is 2008 now, after all), at least this Mighty Mouse lessens the pain somewhat.

Frustrating but ultimately a great product

    • Written by from Bedford

I struggled for months with the scroll wheel working intermittently and I even put the Mighty Mouse to one side and tried other mice. But I kept coming back to it because I do love its compact size and lightness.

I just gave up using the scroll wheel - until one day I stumbled over a review which recommended cleaning the wheel by turning the mouse upside down and running the wheel over a blank sheet of clean paper, in all directions. This worked like a charm and now, every few days, I repeat this cleaning and the mouse works perfectly.

    I love this mouse

    • Written by from Bristol

I have been using a basic mouse for the last 2 years and switched back to the mighty mouse after using the single button variety.

I am really happy with the product, i find it tracks well on a mouse pad and the buttons feel positive.

Some problems which for me are no big deal but might be for you.

    1. the squeeze side buttons is difficult to operate, i have to release my grip on the mouse to use them, i just don't use it

    2. For me it needs a mouse mat underneath it or it makes a horrible scraping noise on my desk

    Cant fault it

    • Written by from llanelli

had this a few days, no problems at all. scrolls perfectly, i like that you can have just a single button, or use it with 2 buttons. i dont like the side buttons personally as when i used the mouse sometimes application switcher would open, but you can turn it off, and even change the function of buttons with ease and anyway way round you want them. Exactly what the customer should get, a fully customisable product. no problems with cord length, i have a macbook (usb on left side) and im right handed and it reaches around the back fine with plenty of slack.

    Right Handers Beware (Macbook)

    • Written by from Gateshead

If are you thinking about buying a WIRED mouse for your macbook and you are right handed then beware, the USB ports are on the left side of the laptop and the wires of the wired mouse just isn't long enough to wrap around the back or front of the laptop so that you are able to use it with your right hand.

I took mine back to the shop to replace it with a wireless mouse and I've had no problems with it at all! Loving my new mouse!

Mighty mouse - with or without a tail

    • Written by from RUGBY

We have been using the mighty mouse for 18 months now and it is terrific. Also have a wireless version for the MacBook and that is excellent too. For those who had trouble with dirty scroll ball how about you wash your hands every time you go to the bathroom? We have so far never had to wash our scroll balls. There is one irritating fault though, and it's on all the Mighty mice we own. The clever touch sensitive left/right click is too sensitive. If your clicking finger is within a few millimeters of the scroll ball it doesn't know whether to left click or right click. I have right clicked man times when I really meant left click, with almost disastrous results to my artwork!! Overall I would give it 5 stars.

The shell design seems to work really well. The roller ball is excellent and so far I have not had any problems with it clogging up with dust. The side buttons are not great to press. I have mapped the middle button to the application switcher and the overall experience has been great.

    The Best Mouse in Business

    • Written by from Glasgow

I cannot give this any less than 5 stars as ergonomically, features wise and for appearance it wins hands down compared to the competition.

In fact to be fair there isn't really any competition for the Mighty Mouse so get one now!

Only problem that seems to occur for some people is the track ball may start to not function in one or more directions. Bit of advice for this: don't eat your dinner and use a mouse at the same time, this will not aid it's life expectancy. If you do get this problem - firstly, get yourself some iKlear, spray a generous amount on the cloth and run the trackball on it. If this does not clear the dirt, get yourself to an Apple Store and ask them to clear the dirt with some compressed air from behind the Genius Bar. Problem Solved.
