    Apple are the "Shure" thing

    Written by AK from Rotherham

    02-Feb-2009

Managed to pick up a pair of these 2nd hand (but unused)for £25. Was curious seeing so many conflicting reviews.

Coming from using Shure SE530's with my Nano 16GB 4th gen, I wasn't expecting much.

To my suprise they are fantastic!! The Shure's are slightly better in every department but not by a huge margin and considering the Shures are 4x more expensive the Apple's are a bargain. Nearly as clear as the Shures with nice balanced bass and just as comfy.

Those saying there poor must not be getting a seal.

So pleased with these I'm tempted to sell my Shures now & get some cash back.

    Love them!

Written by JW from South Molton

I bought these headphones because my old headphones were on the way out, and i had heard good things about these ones. So i went out today and bought some and was a first a but unhappy because there was not much bass. That was when i discovered the other headphone silicon tips which made a massive difference! One feature of the headphones i love is that when you turn the volume up it doesn't become distorted and un-comfortable to listen to, it becomes a enjoyable experience. Compared to my older Senhiser headphones which had way to much bass they are 1, cheaper 2, sound some much better and feel so much more robust. It is true you really can hear things that you have never heard before!

    What A Disappointment

    Written by DB from Langport

I bought these after reading the rave reviews. What a huge disappointment.

In particular, the constant rustling noise when the cables rub against my chin or clothing mean that they are completely useless unless sitting still. When walking I have had to revert to the original headphones supplied with my iPod touch. I'm not even convinced that the sound is any better than the original. Very poor bass.

The only use I now have for them is if I'm listening on my MacBook Pro while my wife is watching the television. They do at least cut out ambient noise better than the original.

    Well, it's difficult to say...

I have read most of the reviews and I tend to agree more with the critical ones than the uncritical ones. Initially I was disappointed as the earphones supplied with the ipod do seem to give a better sound (but then the speakers are much bigger). The in-ear ones were bought as the standard ones were uncomfortable and these are better in that respect although there is a fair amount of vibration noise if you catch the cable or rub it against anything. I listen to as complete a range of music as anyone I've met and the more I listen to the better I find these earphones. They're not a patch on my 10 year old Sennheiser HD 535s (definitely not in-ear!) but that's not a fair comparison.
My judgement is that if you want everything in one product then you're going to be disappointed; they're OK for what they are.

    Great

I had the old Apple in-ear headphones, but they kept falling out my ears. Since getting my iPhone 3G, I just used the headphones that came with it. I recently purchased these new in-ear headphones and I am most impressed. They work well with the iPhone (only the volume buttons don't work, but the mic and centre button works like the standard iPhone headphones). The quality of sound is excellent! Definitely worth the money. I was informed by an employee in the Apple Store that an update will be coming soon to enable the volume buttons. Let's hope it is soon!

    Excellent headphones - for Apple

    Written by MS from CHESSINGTON

In the past, Apple supplied headphones have been very basic and not that good in the sound department. These are a vast improvement. Very good value. Excellent fit and sound (replaces my Shure EC2's). Well done apple!

    Surprisingly bad

    Written by KS from Aberdeen

    26-Jan-2009

I bought these due to recomendations from quite a few websites, including the many positive reviews on here. I was so surprised by how flat they sounded. They are definately better than the included headphones you get with any ipod/iphone, BUT they are in no way comparable to the slightly more expensive Bose in ear headphones which my friend has. The Apple ones have no bass, and feels like the high tones are way to overplayed (probably due to having those 2 drivers in each headphone.

On the plus side, they are very confortable. I'm using the medium size silicone things and they feel very confortable. The silicone cover things don't really do much noise reduction, but once you play music you can't hear much of the outside world in normal conditions (you will hear plane engine noise when on flights, car noise when walking down a road, etc).

Overall: I wouldn't recommend buying these unless you want them for the Apple brand or for the convenience factor of having a volume control built in. Definately not worth the price though.

    Just Right!

    Written by LC from Runcorn

    24-Jan-2009

I purchased these headphones from the Apple Store in Liverpool today and i have spent an hour with them, to find that they are simply just right! I have read many reviews where people were complaining of a 'lack of bass', well i don't agree, these headphones have the right amount of high, low and mid range. In this day and age i can see why many people want more bass from their headphones as a lot of music nowadays is bass-driven, but i think Apple have done well.

They look great, sound great and even the price is great
    Very Good!

Clear sound - but a few flaws

    Written by PW from London

    23-Jan-2009

I have been using these for three weeks and have just bought some Sony EX500LP headphones... here's why....The Apple headphones have a very clear sound with great detail and having only use fairly cheap headphones before, they did make a difference. However, as others have said the bass sound is only achieved if you get the right fit with the buds, you need to jiggle them into just the right position (and even then the bass is not as deep as I would like)...they then tend to fall out....the sound of the cord rubbing against clothes is annoying...and while I don't care about the volume/mic they don't work with either my Ipod or Iphone.... So if you plan to sit still and have the right size ears...these are fine....if you want headphones to use while you are moving...another product may be a better choice.

Bought these the other day and i have to say that they are pretty good. They're not fully compatible with the iphone but hopefully that will be fixed in a future iphone software update. As for people saying that there is no bass, they're just not fitting the ear buds into their ears properly. Push the buds right into the ear and adjust their position till you get more bass. there's load of bass

    VERY DISAPPOINTING !!

    Written by SR from bath

    18-Jan-2009

I've been a sound engineer for the best part of two decades and I thought it only right
to purchase the more expensive of the two Apple headphones with a Mic. However I was truly shocked at the tinny sound quality. They may have a frequency from 5Hz [which is a waste of time cause human's can't here that low and most music has been cut off below 40Hz] but they are so top end heavy you can't hear ANY low end! If you cut away lots of the top end from 4K upwards [cutting a little more as you go up the EQ ] and then boost your low end [64Hz and 125Hz on iTunes] then you get an idea of how the SHOULD sound, but even with that EQ setting they still sound rubbish for the money. The Mic quality is nothing special either.. I'd probably go for the £19 ones..
Even though they don't fit in your ears as well [not being "in ear"] the bog standard iPod headphones may not be as clear but at least you can her some bass !! Like I said; DISAPPOINTED !!

If you want Bass don't buy these

    Written by CM from Northampton

    16-Jan-2009

Great packaging, fit very well, excellent slim mic (as others seem to have big bulky mic's that catch on my shirt collars). But....... The bass sound is truly rubbish, it even crackles (at medium volumes setting) when it was struggling with bass on certain EQ setting. I need a set that has good bass reproduction and these aren't them. I am truly disappointed as I really wanted to love these headphone for my newly aquired iPhone. Back to the shop they go. I need a set that has good bass reproduction and these aren't them.

Come on Apple give me a black or silver set that has decent bass.

Decent phones, let down slightly by poor fitting options

    Written by MR from Kingston

    16-Jan-2009

I got these to use with my iPhone to replace an otherwise great pair of Shure E2Cs - which are about the same price as these. The controls work fine with the exception, as previous posters have said, that the volume control doesn't work. Not a huge deal for me, but if it is for you I would suggest not buying them until Apple gets around to releasing an update which resolves this, if indeed they ever do. Don't hold your breath.

Sound quality is good (for ear-canal phones anyway) with a reasonably flat response across the range. Bass is lacking a little, but not as much as some folks seem to suggest - but bass is seriously dependant upon getting the buds to fit nice and snug in your ears. If they get at all loose, the bass disappears quickly.

My main reason for only giving these 3 stars is that they only come with one type of bud fittings (one pair each of soft silicone buds in small, medium and large). My Shures came with 3 different types - soft and hard silicone and the squidgy foam ones - something for everyone. The silicone ones are generally more comfortable and are fine for sitting around, but if I am out walking I tend to find that they work loose (there goes the bass) and need jamming back in every five minutes or so which I am too impatient for.

The case they come with is ok and looks nice, but doesn't stay closed in your pocket so is of limited use.

Got these from the Bristol store today. Initial impressions are good. The fit is perfect for my ears and the passive sound isolation is amongst the best I have tried. Sound quality is also impressive - not overly bassey and a good clear midrange. The triangular case is a bonus too. I'd recommend.

    Good effort!

    Written by JH from Chatham

I am really picky with my headphones having tried Sennheiser (CX300 & 400) Shure (E2c) and VModa (Vibe).
I predominantly listen to dance and trance music, I therefore like quite a bit of bass.
These new Apple earphones have a real clarity of sound, not quite as much bass as the VModas, but if you take time and care to fit them properly using the various earbuds and making sure they are right down inside your ear, they have just enough bass to keep me happy.
Needless to say on my nano (4G) having the remote on the headphone wire makes skipping through tracks and adjusting the volume a breeze.
Would be 5star if it had just a touch more bass.

    Impressed so far...

    Written by TH from SWADLINCOTE

    14-Jan-2009

Having read a few reviews, I discovered Apple's compatibility description was rather inaccurate.

The headphones, microphone, play/pause button, next/previous track clicks also work with my iPhone. As Mentioned, the only thing that doesn't work are the volume buttons, which doesn't really bother me as the iPhone has it's nice outer volume control that I can easily press whilst it's still in my pocket.

My initial impression of the headphones was quite a worried "oh my god, these are awful". I then realised I had pushed them slightly too far into my ears, which kills both the trebles and the bass. After realising and putting the headphones in correctly, the sound is brilliant! I keep hearing things in songs that I hadn't really noticed before. I listen to mostly Rock as well as Drum and Bass and some Pop, and it all sounds amazing. I use the Rock EQ on my iPhone.

I just bought them and I realised that there is no bass, in comparison to my previous 25euro earphones. If you adjust the equalizer it's getting a little better. Apart from that, the quality of the headset is great, it isolates perfectly from the ambient sounds and the remote/mic work perfect. Getting ready for some voip call from my iPod touch 2ng gen!
