Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Purchase a spare, demand a replacement
Written by NR from Brentwood
16-Apr-2007
My macbook cable broke recently and I took it back to the store where it was replaced free of charge, rightly so considering it's had only normal usage.
There is also a slightly longer shield around the top of the cable than on the old one, so it seems apple have made changes to it.350 of 381 people found this useful

Health and Safety Issue!!!!
Written by AH

Looks like I'm not the only customer whose Mag(un)Safe power adapter blew after just over a year (just after Apple care cover runs out!). Fizzing, flash, bang and melted metal pins is not what I expect from any product let alone an expensive Apple product. This has serious dented my enthusiasm for the brand. I expected good design, but not dangerous design. Sort this out Apple before you get a court order from the UK Health and Safty Executive... This issue potentially effects EVERY one of your MacBook Customers.

Not built to last
Written by JM from high wycombe

Its a good idea but as others appear to have found they break easily and in such a way as to make it near impossible to fix.
This is something that Apple should really improve as having to keep spending 60 pounds for replacements is ridiculous!276 of 296 people found this useful

Appalling Apple product. Unacceptable!
Written by DM from Newbury
10-Feb-2009
Had our MacBook for just over a year now and the power adaptor has suddenly packed up. Absolutely shocked that a replacement is 58 pounds, what an extortionate price to pay. And no, I do not consider myself 'lucky' that mine lasted this long. The cable should last the lifespan of the MacBook.
From reading these many, many reviews it is clear that this is a serious issue plaguing many loyal Apple customers, who are constantly having to pay for something that is not fit for purpose.
Apple - this issue is a disgrace. Deal with it!48 of 52 people found this useful

Wake up Apple!
Written by KH from Portlaoise,

I'm surprised that Apple haven't issued a product recall for this item.
My MagSafe Adapter is also having problems, exactly one year after I purchased my MacBook. The two prongs in the power brick have blackened for no apparent reason and it has stopped charging my MacBook even though I always use a surge protector. No replacement is offered as my warranty has just expired so I have to pay €90 to replace a defective charger.
Wake up Apple! This is ridiculous!
P.S. I'm even forced to give it one star... Come on now.40 of 40 people found this useful

WOW!!! Same problem as everyone else has...

How annoying. Just read thru all the reviews about the magsafe charger, cuz my charger suddenly stopped working. Exactly one year on, as everyone else has predicted. Burned thru the rubber at the magnet end and it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Gutted and very dissapointing. They should all be replaced with no questions asked as far as i'm concerned...
Really really annoyed about this. Bad bad apple!!!40 of 40 people found this useful

disappointment for me and my wallet!

Like the many other reviews for this product, mine is not positive.
Basically, the cable has stopped working and it must be noted it has not had anything other than normal usage.
I am annoyed about this for a number of reasons;
Firstly, considering the price and the brand, you expect a high quality, durable product. Secondly, the replacement is not cheap. Considering the feedback apple have had regarding this and Im not a technical expert but it seems the problem is due to loose wires between the magnetic connection and the power box. That cable should be available for purchase (hopefully, at a much cheaper price!) Finally, and by no means least, the charge for British customers is £59 (equivalent USD $114.96) yet, our American friends are charged $79?35 of 36 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Potential Fire Hazard
Written by EB from Coatbridge
07-Nov-2007
I purchased my Mac last Christmas and was highly satisfied with the quality up until a month ago. The charger was used on a normal basis and plugged in, only until my iBook was charged. I noticed over the space of two weeks, that the cord seemed to go soft, right next to the megnetic bit.
Unfortunately I did not pay much attention to this until my Mac stopped charging at random intervals. I unplugged it, and was extremely dissapointed to find that the cable had burned away at the back, if I had left it plugged in for much longer, it could have become a major threat.
I could have been electrocuted (as the metal inside the cable was clearly visible and could easily have been touched) and there was a huge chance of a fire starting. This product is a rip off at almost £60 and I am incredibly dissapointed in Apple.33 of 34 people found this useful

Cable melted but got an instant replacement
Written by AG from Weybridge
11-Nov-2008
Like others, my cable melted through near the connection point at the weekend and no longer works. It was a good job I was using my MacBook at the time this happened so I could disconnect straight away as it started making a fizzing/crackling noise soon after (hate to think what could of happened if I was charging the battery whilst out of the house). Took the cable to the Apple Store on Regent's Street this morning and they changed it without any questions and no Genius Bar appointment needed. 2 Stars for the replacement service but this is quite a serious issue if cables are producing so much heat that the plastic and inner wires are melting.

broken after 2 weeks!
Written by JV from Chichester

I can not believe how awful the macbook power adapter is. I moved to macs expecting quality - it is apparently why macs cost more than pc's. Worst of all was that the power adapter failed a day after I arrived in Zambia. Guess what - no dealers - can't afford to call support and it has taken me 30 minutes to log onto this site at the local internet cafe. Having read so many reviews complaining about the adapter am astounded that Apple hasn't recalled and dealt with the problematic product. Is it so hard to have an email tech support address?

Same problem: magnetic cable end wires burnt through
Written by KM from EXETER

Same problem as everyone else BUT when I contacted apple they said this was a 'known problem' and will replace it for free providing I send back the old adaptor. So it seems to be something they are aware of at least. So if you have this problem don't waste your money buying a new one!

melt down
Written by VW from STREET

another blackened, melted cable - just at the point where it leaves the white box...luckily my 13 year old daughter showed me the cable as soon as she noticed the little charred bits on it...it's just a few months past warrantee and certainly hasn't suffered from over usage...this is a lethal game apple...there should be a recall on this product and some re-design work...
...every other product you make is so brilliantly well designed and thought through...you have to do something about this..30 of 33 people found this useful

I'm afraid, got the same problem as the hundreds of people before me, health and safety issues with the melting of the cable coming out of the adapter block.
Good thing i was there when it happened!
Can't afford a new one at this price, the mare fact that this product is a health and safety hazard it should be replaced free of charge29 of 32 people found this useful

Another disappointed customer
Written by LB from Denton
02-Mar-2008
Now I love my Mac products usually and have used them for years, but since I bought my Macbook a year and a half ago I've had nothing but trouble. First the casing had to be replaced because the material used meant that it stained, then the battery went, then the fan, then the hard drive! Luckily all under warranty! Now, unfortunately out of warranty, the Magsafe has gone and I've had to spend a fortune on a new one. I don't even use my laptop outside of the home, so it's not wrapped up on a regular basis, or removed, yet the plastic has torn away and the wire is exposed, so it won't charge my Macbook anymore. As somebody said previously, they should make the wire removable so it can be cheaply replaced, instead of having to buy a whole new unit when it breaks!

Health and Safety Hazard
Written by PO from Rathfarnham

Having heard so much about overheating laptop batteries causing fires over the past couple of years I am amazed the so-called mag-"safe" adapter has not been recalled. Just google for "magsafe melting" to see how many people have had problems with these faulty devices. My magsafe began to melt at the connector and started sparking this week after which time I stopped using it altogether. I have had a it just over a year. I reported the problem to apple - I had ordered my laptop from them directly. I was told it was not covered under warranty and I would have to buy a new one. To be honest they had no interest in hearing about the problem at all which is very bad form for such a serious issue. I hope they resolve this issue soon and start by recalling the existing units which definitely appear to pose a fire hazard.

Bad and dangerous

After 12 months of life I came home and the cable was burning and melting. Identical fault to so many other users and apple claim it's just wear and tear and not covered by the warranty. This is clearly a product that is not only poor, but actually is dangerous. Beware.

I Agree with everyone else that has this product. It does burn away very easily and is a rip off for a replacement.
However you can write down your Mac book serial number and take it to an apple reseller and they will replace it free of charge. They give you a tracking number and receipt number.29 of 33 people found this useful

Pathetic power adaptor
Written by SA from Skirling

My power adaptor has suddenly stopped working after only several months use. Having had the identical problem with the power adaptor on my iphone- again after only very brief use- I am beginning to think that my devotion to apple is mis-founded and very very expensive to maintain. Considering the huge number of similar complaints on the website I am at a loss to understand why apple are not dealing with this major issue.
