Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Take care
Written by DS from North Fort Myers
21-Oct-2009
I've been using the MagSafe Adapter on my MacBook for 2 1/2 years now with no problems at all. No sign of fray, overheating at all. I was reading all of the bad reviews and feel I may have lucked out on a "good batch". I treat mine carefully (Never wrap the cord using the "holder" provided as it puts strain on the cable possibly damaging it internally) I just loosely wrap it in a loop and place it in a cheap camera bag when on the go.

Still working, BUT ...

4 years and still charging merrily along. BUT - the blooming (for want of an acceptable word!) thing intermittently trips the house electrics!
I came back from holiday a few nights ago, plugged in and "clunk" followed by silence. Luckily the lights are on a separate circuit. The Central Heating boiler protested too!
I'm going to have to buy a new one and try my luck. APPLE, get a grip of this, it's gone on long enough.8 of 11 people found this useful

Not Good Enough
Written by RM from Oxford
16-Oct-2009
Just bought a new white MacBook - in theory, everything is fine, except the minor problem of the power adapter not working!!! It worked for about 2 hours then just died. It only sporadically even registers on the MacBook - most of the time it doesn't light up or do anything. My advice is - buy AppleCare! It's already been worth it for me. I'm currently waiting for my replacement in the post. I really hope the new one performs a bit better.

Not at all impressed.
Written by CP from Carlisle

My second MagSafe power adapter has blown in less than 12 months. I got a Macbook for Christmas 2008 and by February 2009 the adapter ceased to work. I didn't have any proof of purchase as I received the Macbook as a gift so bought another one for £58 from this website. Bought it in July and yesterday, on the 13th October, the new cable blew and no longer works. Absolutely appalling considering how much they cost. Will be approaching Apple to try and get a replacement as I'm not prepared to spend another £58 on a pile of you know what. Not impressed at all.

I don't understand the troubles people have been having with this. Ive owned a macbook since december 2007 with the same power cord and it works brilliantly, its not like i dont charge often either my mac is never off. I also love the magneticly interchangable plugs they are so easy to change and have come in handy when i purchased the word plug kit

Awful

Like many others on here, my adapter has stopped working after just over a year of use. As my warranty has expired I was forced to pay around £52 as they ever so generously gave me an 11% student discount. Wonder how long this one will last...

Nothing wrong with the design.

If you push the plug up or down in the socket to release it rather than pulling it hard perpendicular to the case you will not damage the cable. This means it won't break.
On a side note, not sure why the MBP 13" comes with this, yet in the store when I asked for another adaptor for my home they sold me an 80W one.. if that's better why provide 60W with the laptop? Was this useful?

Third one in two years...
Written by JK from Jena

Sigh, what a rubbish piece of design. Just bought my third Magsafe. First one lasted a year, second one six months. Always wrapped up the cable properly but the first one would only continue working if you jiggled the cable, and the second one pulled of the housing and had the wires exposed.
The MagSafe is a nice idea, but come on Apple!6 of 8 people found this useful

Dead after 8 months ...

and basically just from sitting in the wall socket. Unplugged less than 5 times, and just died in silence. Cables look fine - guess i's the electronics. Will receive a new one free of charge (have Apple Care) - but will have to buy a spare (I use my MacBook for Business and can't wait for the spare to arrive) as the MacBook can't power up without the Magsafe. Another DKK 700 ($140) on top of the otherwise nice expensive MacBook... sigh ...
Two stars for the otherwise nice design and magsafe feature.4 of 6 people found this useful

Breaks far too easily
Written by RG from LONDON

I have the MacBook and MacBook Pro versions (there are now three different PSUs for Mac laptops...) and on both the low voltage cable (ie the one which connects to the laptop) has pulled out of the body of the adapter so that the wires show. These are beginning to fray so the adapter will no doubt fail shortly. This is a serious design flaw and it seems that I am not the only person to have had this problem.

Disappointing

The magnetic plug is brilliant. It's just the rest of the design that's poor. I've had to bind all the cable connections with insulating tape (not exactly a good look) and even then they only work intermittently. What's really annoying is having to dispose of the whole unit and buying the same again for £58 when the problem is just about loose connections.

I had this charger for less than a year and the end of the cable has now melted and so will not charge. This is so annoying because it means that the work that I have saved ok it I can not access because it has no charge now.
Good idea bit of does not work well.12 of 14 people found this useful

Bad! Bad! Bad!

This cable really let me down. My Macbook is less than a year old, and already I'm having to pay £60 to replace the power cable. The flex just can't stand average wear and tear. Ours ended up splitting, so the cables inside are exposed, and now it's completely useless. A real let down from such a good company.

DANGEROUS!!
Written by TM from london

apple should seriously reconsider using this type of charger. when i purchased my macbook this comes as standard and it seems i am just another customer whose charger has blown up/ melted. i am seriously let down and annoyed that because my apple care has ran out i now have to pay £60 for a new one even though this dangerous product melted when in my hands and caused injury.
this is the one thing that makes macbook a very bad decision for any future buyer.
i have rated this one star because i had to choose at least one i would give this a 0.15 of 19 people found this useful

great idea let down by reliability
Written by TL from STEYNING

Now moving onto my 4th one. If I could give it '0' stars I would. Tips: 1. Applecare has now paid for itself in new Magsafes alone - so that's good value!. 2 Buy one as a spare to use while you're waiting for a new one in the post.
To be honest though, it'd be easier if I could just drop in to the Apple shop and swap whenever it breaks. They should be in a bin marked 'please take one'. OR they should send you two in the post. Summary: Absolute junk that lets down the otherwise brilliant macbook.17 of 19 people found this useful

I like this charger very much, as a "switcher" the chargers of PC´s was a thing that really annoyed me, they are always big bulky and darnded ugly!
This one is practical, small, and stylish, the extension cord option is also nice.
The build quality may not be the best, i´m thinking of the cable it self, it seems like it is very thin, the organizing sytem could also do damage to the cables after numerous times of packing and unpacking it.7 of 10 people found this useful

I've used it solidly for 3 years and it is still perfect. Don't believe every review here, my one has never shown any issues. The design is brilliant, takes up no space in a bag with the thin cable. The charger has been one of the most impressive pieces of my Macbook's hardware.

Another broken power adapter
Written by JC from WARWICK

At least mine lasted nearly 2 years before if failed to work! Problem is, without it the Macbook is useless. I've had to revert to my old trusted PC for the time being. Surely a company such as Apple can produce an adapter that last for a good number of years? Then again at £60 for a replacement, probably not.

Adapter
Written by EM

- Buy apple care, it's very cheap and is for like 3 years worth of warranty, i wouldn't have any laptop without some kind of insurance of repair, laptops are always wobbling around and can have little issues you may want to get repaired, this includes getting new adapters! And generally with laptops the hard disk only lasts 2yrs so just to be safe . Go on do it, it's well cheap!
-Every time you feel it getting worryingly hot unplug it, just to make sure it doesn't burn out, remember a laptop can run on battery even in your house it doesn't need to be plugged in 24 hrs a day.
-Keep your adapter on the floor, not on your sofa to prevent the above! The adapter being on something soft where it can't air out seems to encourage it to overheat in my experiences so now i always put it on the floor.
The magnet though has saved my laptop so many times from a horrid fall!7 of 9 people found this useful
