What can I say about Mac Batteries... they're great balloons!

    • Written by from Colchester

Currently on the 4th battery since purchase of my MacBook Pro new in 2006! The batteries are good when they work but at the price Apple charge for them I'm disappointed they do not come with a length of string to hold on to them when they inflate like a balloon. Now seriously, I can accept a battery naturally depleting to at the end of its life but to expand like they do when they come to end of life is just unacceptable. Very disappointing from an expensive 'supposedly' quality product. Oh and even my Late 2011 MacBook Pro battery has got a bump on it now despite it registering good health! This bump now interferes with the track pad rendering 'click' inoperable... Come on Apple sort it out!

    3rd battery in 3 years

    • Written by from london

A really bad joke... my computer does not leave my desk and run charger most of the time. My battery don't last more than 1 year. after a while they keep discharging and the prompt of low battery doesn't come on and the computer just die... which is obviously very bad for the hardrive. And of course it's £100 every time.
    Nice on Apple!

    Supernova Battery

And here we go again! 3rd MBP 17" in 4 years. I have a few Apple products (Apple TV, iPad (1st, 3rd and 5th gen) iphone5 plus 2013 iMac 27inch 3.4GHz, so as you've guessed I'm a Mac Fan). But the battery in my MBP is awful.

After 13 months of use I returned from a weeks holiday to find the battery forcing it's way out of the casing. It's split wide open exposing the silver cells inside, plus it distorted the MBP.

Yes I know rechargeable batteries don't last for ever, but no other Apple product (which requires batteries) has shown such a dangerous design flaw, Apple you really need to sort this out, its DANGEROUS!

    Excellent Battery

    • Written by from Newcastle

I've had this MacBook for 6 years, and in that time I have had 2 batteries for it; the one it arrived with, and the replacement I bought about 3 years ago. I recently bought a new one from Apple, and yet again, I am not disappointed. I tend to get between 3 and 4 hours out of the battery when I treat it properly, and if the battery life starts to diminish, I put it through a complete charging cycle, and it works fine again. I once had an issue with a different MacBook, where the battery was only lasting about half an hour, but I took it into Apple and they replaced it, no bother.

    Another excellent product, Apple. Thanks.

There's a lot of nags on here about batteries. Yes it gets very hot - not great but its the way it is. Yes they do run out if you treat them badly - so would your girlfriend if you treated her badly.

I have always fully charged and discharged my battery - just get into the habit of regularly saving work if you are down to 20% or below. By doing this my original battery has just decided it's time for retirement at the grand old age of 5. In Human years I reckon thats about 100!

    An expensive disappointment

    • Written by from WITNEY

I put a new one of these in a 7-year old MacBook Pro (17-inch) 2.16 Core Duo just 5 months ago when the original battery started to report the 'Service Battery' condition. After only 107 charge cycles the new battery now registers 100% charge but shows an amperage of zero and will no longer power the MacBook. The battery status menu says 'Service Battery' already, so this new one has gone kaputt already.

I didn't dispose of the old battery, which lasted more than 6 years before it began to report the 'Service Battery' message after 650 cycles, so I've put that one back in the MacBook, charged it up and it's fine. A real workhorse battery.

I expected at least as good service from the new battery, and have to say that a £100 battery that lasts only 5 months and 107 cycles before going belly up is a very poor show indeed.

This seems typical of the current supplies of this particular battery, and it really isn't good enough. Five stars for the original battery, which is back in the computer and once again allowing me to transport my trusty MacBook. But the minimum of one star only for the new battery purchased here which is dead after only 5 months.

    Another swollen battery

    • Written by from Basingstoke

Now need to order my 3rd battery in 5 years.
It's a complete DISGRACE. And at £100 a time, I feel I'm being mugged by Apple for their own incompetence.
Although working (at the moment) the current one has now swollen and is preventing me from clicking the trackpad button properly!

    • Written by from DUMFRIES

Yet another swollen battery, about to order my fourth. Apple have been quite good at fixing other issues will all the mac products I've owned over the years, but on this they have failed, deciding to ignore the problem. I've tried 3rd party batteries too, but no luck there either...please don't make me buy a PC.....

    Expensive poor performance

    • Written by from Chatham

Apple please regard all the negative comments about batteries here. I add my complaint that I am now having to purchase my 3rd battery in 4 years. My previous MacBook Pro had no problem with the battery. It lasted 5 years until thieves got hold of it. May be it is still going strong, but at over £100 could you give a battery that has a bit more life. This is very poor service from expensive kit

I have had no trouble whatsoever with the battery for my 17 inch macbook pro. In the 4 years I have had the laptop I must have charged it 7-800 times, with no problems. The solution is never to fully discharge the battery and to use a laptop fan cooler whenever the battery runs hot. I use an Akasa off USB port. Keeps my Mac book cool.

Never come across quite such a rubbish battery before! On my 3rd battery now, both the previous ones warped and buckled - actually deforming my macbook pro casing. Not impressed, but as I can't find an alternative I'm having to by another.

My Macbook is shutting down randomly. Checked the battery and it is under 460 cycles, condition poor and watching my battery charge in the title bar dropping by the minute. I got this battery less than 2 years ago and already need another. That is my second battery in 4 years. At £100 a pop that is not good.

Over three years of use and over 800 load cycles

    • Written by from London

Batteries, as per design, are problematic: A lot of energy can be stored in this small electrochemical marvel. However, there are so many things that can go wrong on this seemingly simple device, from abusive charging electronics to abusive user, using or charging in too cold or too hot temperatures, charging speeds, purging speeds, etc. etc. And I can only assume that the quality of the batteries, even from the same factory, from the same production line and from the same batch can vary greatly.

That being said, I must have gotten a peach instead of lemon with my 17" MBP. I used my mac a LOT. Sometimes discharging fully before charging, sometimes just plugging in when convenient, sometimes using the computer plugged in for days and days, sometimes not using the computer for a week or two, either plugged in or not.

Despite my - what battery experts might call abusive - use, the battery lasted brilliantly for over three years. According to coconutBattery app, the battery went through over 800 load cycles, and although for the last two months it had started to deteriorate slowly, thus getting close to the end of its life, it was still at 80% of its designed capacity.

Now the strange thing is: For the past six months I was abroad. I couldn't take The Beast with me, so just in case, I detached the battery from the computer before leaving. This seems to be one of the best decisions I've ever made, as when I came back, the two middle cells had swollen to about two to times their original thickness, popping the back side of the battery completely off and bending the other side. If the battery would have been attached to the computer it would have done some extensive damage to it. Luckily there are no signs of heating up, if this would have happened it would have been a complete disaster as the battery was just in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box, in a pile of boxes with clothes, flammable materials etc. This swelling problem is the only real reason why I cannot give the battery full five stars.

    - Lasted abusive use for over three years and 800 load cycles, very impressive!
    - Solidly built from high quality materials.
    - Charge level indicator is very handy.

    - Extreme swelling after not being used for six months. Was this caused by not using the battery or would it have happened anyway, I will never know.
    - Expensive. About 60% of the current price would be reasonable but at over £100 a pop I am going to try a non-Apple replacement, costing less than 1/3.

    Needs sorting out!

    • Written by from Send

I'm a student, and I use my laptop a lot! My battery had the same 'Swelling' problem, and clearly apple still havent fixed that. I'm not sure if its due to the laptop getting very hot or a technical fault, but It's still a lot of money for something that only lasts months! And being a student I dont have the money to keep replacing a battery, when I only have a weekend job. I really need a new battery, but i dont want to waste my money if it does it again! Really needs to get sorted out, considering its been a problem for a few years now for many people.

Third battery in four years - previous two had the swollen battery problem, which Apple ignores, This battery is a few weeks old, has had only 4 charge cycles and already the health is down to 35% and the 'Service Battery' indication has appeared. Dreadful product, very poor Apple.

    3rd battery in 4 years - Useless

    • Written by from Dublin

The good thing about Apple products is that most the parts originate from the one company, when compared to a PC. This usually results in a more stable computer. The downside is that when there is an obvious design flaw in a part you are stuck with continuously replacing with another inferior part. This is my 3rd battery I am about to buy for my 2007 macbook pro. They all ended there lives with the swollen issue. The last battery only last 14 months, convenient for Apple that they only come with a 12 month warranty. This last battery had only cycled around 280 times, well under what Apple say it should have done prior to requiring replacement. I have known about this design flaw for years so I was expecting it. To anyone else who this might be your first battery replacement start saving for the next one now.

All the reviewers who praise this product obviously work for Apple as one look on the Net will confirm this, this battery has a design flaw.

They did have a replacement program for a while but they have stopped that, greed must of got the better of them.

This product is a "lemon", a joke, and Apple should admit so.

Three years, but I didn't exactly look after it...

    • Written by from Swindon

17" MBP battery has finally packed in, but then I rarely ran the laptop except from mains. Symptoms were low battery life, and, on the 17", trackpad buttons losing their usual nice clicky feel. The trackpad trouble was caused by the battery swelling and pressing on the underside...

Off to the shop to get a new one now: the one in my old Powerbook G4 is still fairly good even after 8 years or so !
