    Several years of good use

    • Written by from Tunbridge Wells

I have just started having trouble with my battery and the System Profiler says the health of the batter is poor. But it has done 707 cycles and from the look of the other people posting on these reviews, this is pretty good. I have had the computer for about four years and have used it very heavily for the last two years as it is now my only computer and runs for at about 8 hours a day. I may find my next battery is as bad as those spoken about here by others, but I hope not and I just wanted to add a very positive review amongst all the doom and gloom. Not all batteries for MacBook Pros are bad news. I would love to hear what is the best practice for keeping a battery in good condition. I run mine until I get a warning that it needs plugging in, then I power up till fully charged, then I remove the cable. Is that good practice? Or have I just been very lucky!

    Not great!

My wife and I both own 15" macbook pros. We've both experienced problems with the battery. Both macbook pros are a little over a year old. Both batteries would indicate being fully charged but when my wife's dropped to 40% charge left, it would just power off. Mine did exactly the same thing at 30%. No warning, no going into power save mode etc, just switches off. My battery has done 119 cycles and apple have stated that they would not expect a reduction in performance until you've hit 300 cycles (charges).
How lucky, just outside of the 1 year warranty! :(

On a positive note, apple replaced my wife's battery for free; i was not so lucky though.

To be fair to apple though, before i got the fault, i could easily get 2 - 3 hours of work done on a battery that was fully charged; sometimes even more depending on how much processing was going on.

    a flawed product

    • Written by from LEWES

I had two replacement batteries in the first year. Luckily they were under warranty. Now I find after less than a year after that the third one seems to be going the same way. As other users have reported, sudden power failures, erratic time/percentage display. I have always done what Apple suggest, charge it up, run it down etc. The computer is great but the batteries are rubbish frankly.

i have had 3 dead batteries - i keep on buying them because i have no choice (short of throwing my macbook pro out) - they keep on failing - i dont understand why apple does not do something about this appaling issue.

    terrible

    • Written by from Newtownabbey

no stars should be the true rating, like everybody else i experience automatic turning off of the computer with 90-95% of the battery apparently still remaining. does not hold any length of time over 10 minutes, and this is a replacement battery due to an apple recall earlier in the year.most inconvenient for an apparent "laptop" that it now needs plugged in anytime i use it.

    Poor battery life

    • Written by from STOCKTON-ON-TEES

I bought a new Macbook six months ago and since 'upgrading' to Lion my battery life has dropped from 6-7 hours to 2.5hrs. Beware, I am not the only one, see the support and communities pages. Stay clear until (or if) Apple fix this.

    Its not rocket science!

    • Written by from Manchester

Batteries do not last a life time and most the people on here writing bad reviews clearly do not how to use them!

I've had my battery for 3 years now, 521 cycles and now is ready for replacement. Theses batteries are good if you know how to use them, for example, do not have your AC permanently attached if you are using your MacBook Pro-remove your battery so as not to over charge>that wastes the battery! Use your common sense guys and don't listen to the bad reviews, its not rocket science!

    Poor battery life

I bought my Mac Book Pro in September 2007 and I'm very pleased with it appart from the battery. I am not able to use it for any period of more that an hour wqith any confidence as the battery suddenly looses its charge. I can only use it reliably when it's connected to a mains power source. So much for it allowing me ot use it as a laptop!

    Zero Stars

I spent over $2,500 on my MacBook Pro right when it came out about three years ago. The battery died after just a few months and the fans started making jet engine noises not much later. I got the battery replaced for free, but the replacement one is also terrible and I am actually about to buy a third one, since either selling this one or being able to use it myself will require a proper battery. 45 minutes fully charged does not do the job! Not to mention that the magsafe power cord gave up as well. 90 Euros for a new one of those! 97 Pounds for a third battery. $100 for new fans...where did those initial $2,500 go, I wonder...

    Good battery

    • Written by from London

In response to GB from Bury this is a 5550mAh battery and battery life will be largely dependent on your hardware and how you use it so I can only say how it behaves on my MBP.

I'm running a 12 months old MBP bought in Nov'07 with a 2.6GHz CPU and I have WI-FI (802.11n) and Bluetooth on all the time. Also I listen to music most of the time I'm using the computer, including when on battery power.

I get about 2:30 hours of use of this battery in normal/heavy usage and when only browsing the web and doing lighter stuff I can get up to 4 hours. I suppose if I dimmed the screen and disabled some of the radios I would get close to the claimed 5 hours of battery life out of it.

The original battery on my MBP is now 12 months old, has 70 charge cycles and holds 93% of the maximum capacity. It has oscillated over time hitting a low of 87% of charge held but after a few calibrations it went back to over 90%.

People that complain that their battery deteriorates too quickly should probably try doing some maintenance on their batteries. Apple's batteries are provided by Sony and they also provide batteries to a large number of laptop manufacturers so there's nothing different between the battery you get for the MBP and the ones you will get for some PC brands and if you don't do maintenance on the PC laptops as well you will find out that their batteries deteriorate as quickly as the ones in the Apple machines.

    design fault?

    • Written by from London

I got my Macbook Pro about 1.5 years ago and just past the 12 month mark the first battery started failing and cut off even when displaying 90%+
I contacted Apple and they did agree to exchange the battery in good faith however the replacement now has the same symptoms, clearly this must be a design flaw (perhaps unless it's a fault with the original AC adapter). Now well past warranty £100 is pretty steep for a replacement knowing that it will probably fail within a year!?

    Macbook Pro battery losing power

    • Written by

My MacBook Pro is only 9 months old and for the last 2 months I have had reducing battery life. I was looking to buy a new one but thought I would check the reviews first which is where I clocked the Apple Support route and hey presto - after a few checks I am being sent a replacement under warranty.

    Some satisfaction

    • Written by

Like a majority of the reviews here my battery also was faulty, after only 6 months and 41 cycles it lasted about 5 minutes before shutting down with no warning.

To be fair to Apple I phoned their technical support who checked my system information over the phone and agreed to replace it with a new one straight away.
Lets hope the replacement works OK!

    Battery Problems

    • Written by from London

I have had my macbook pro since feb 07. I am too experiencing short battery life and ever increasing random shutdowns when not plugged into AC. Perhaps Apple should start thinking about customers who use their products for a living instead of diverting their resources to pointless products like iphone. Arrogance and doing things on the cheap will lose you many customers if you don't get your act together

BatteryLife-hey Apple is this the way you became the most valuable company?

    • Written by from BROOKLYN

Bought my macbook pro in January 2010. I have been careful about the use of its battery believing that it will live long. Big Joke! It only lasts 34 minutes and now i have to spend 100 sterling pounds to replace it. My laptop has no such a problem. It is already 5 years old and the battery lasts 3 hours. Very big disappointment, Apple

    A disgrace!

    • Written by from Charlottenlund

My currently installed battery is #2 and this is even worse than #1! It looses power extremely fast - even if I dim the display all the way down, close all programs running in the background AND disable Bluetooth. I've had way too many instances where my MBP suddenly shuts down without any warning.

Too bad another battery isn't an option...
