Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Dont try and use with dvi-vga adapter!
Written by VG from Dublin
07-Jul-2006
When buying my Macbook I had the bright idea that I would only buy this adapter and then use one of the many dvi to vga adapters that I already own to "adapt" the dvi to vga when I needed it. Unfortunately Apple was one step ahead of me and have removed the holes in this dvi socket that pass through the vga connection. Ergo you are forced to buy yet another overpriced adapter from them in order to use a vga monitor! After buying vga and dvi adapters plus another adapter to connect to a TV you have ended up spending almost 60 euro on top of the already high cost of an apple machine! Most laptops and pc's come with at least 2 of these connections built in! I am very disappointed with Apple's actions in designing this product and hope for better service from them in the future.

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Tight-fisted Apple

Included with the 12" Powerbook but buy an iMac and you have to pay extra. The port is useless without one so why bundle it with one machine but not the other?

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Not compatible with other DVI connections from Apple!!
Written by MS from BANBURY
31-May-2007
I bought this in the hope of being able to cover all bases when connecting a monitor. I already have a DVI to VGA adapter that came with, and fits my Mac Pro. I bought this MINI DVI to DVI adapter to for my MacBook so that I could use it with a DVI capable monitor if available. If not available, I was hoping to then connect my current DVI to VGA adapter on top of this to enable me to plugin a VGA monitor. Basically, in order to get a VGA screen to work I would plug in my MINI DVI to DVI, then connect my DVI to VGA to that so it is two adapters connected together. THEY'RE NOT COMPATIBLE THOUGH!! There is an alternative but at £95...
Two Apple products that don't fit together. That's just stupidity!
Every DVI cable or connection I have from Apple is a DVI-I Single or Dual, but this is a DVI-D Dual. Small, but vital differences which make them incompatible.
Even the packaging shows the product to be a DVI-I Single adapter, but what is enclosed is doesn't match the packaging!! This is not like you Apple, sort it.45 of 70 people found this useful

Why oh Why is it so short? ... Too Short in fact!
What would it cost to make the lead a little longer?
Stupid design, looks ugly, strains the port on the laptop and keeps falling out!46 of 73 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
not compatable with dvi-vga!
Written by SF from ABERDEEN

i bought this when my minidvi->vga died. i figured i could combine it with dvi-d->vga adaptor incase i got a dvi monitor in the future. but apparently this adaptor only carries the digital signal (shown by only about 10pins of the usual 24) and not the analogue. so now i gotta get another minidvi to vga :'(
apple needs to make it clear that this only provides a dvi-d signal and is NOT compatable with vga75 of 131 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Misleading selling by Apple
Written by TO from BANBURY
16-Dec-2009
I purchased this to connect it to a DVI monitor (previously connected to our X-serve); the purpose for which it is advertised. As supplied It does not fulfil that purpose.
The monitor has a DVI connector. That connector does not fit the adaptor. There are four pins in the connector that the adaptor has no corresponding holes for. From subsequent web research it seems these pins are for VGA signal. I know they aren't required, but they're there and I don't want to cut them out!
Apple should say the adaptor will not fit most DVI connector equipped screens unless you either cut away those pins or drill extra holes in the adaptor. Currently I'm £14 down on the purchase of the adaptor and unable to connect my screen. No apology from Apple! Was this useful?

Useless
Written by AR from Braintree

Falls out unless supported on a desk. Falls out when you move your laptop. Falls out when you move your monitor lead.
I would give it no stars if this review system did not force at least one star.45 of 96 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Useless if you want to connect to a VGA monitor
Written by CT from Dublin 5

This is the second apple video adaptor I've bought in 2 months that doesn't work. The last one was a DVI to component video adaptor that wasn't compatible with my Mac Pro Gee Force graphics card. This one won't work with my Macbook to my existing apple DVI to VGA adaptor.
Really bad form Apple.28 of 62 people found this useful

Mini DVI to DVI-D - you can't attach a DVI to VGA adapter
Written by AK from Lahti
12-Nov-2007
This adapter is useless for me (until I eventually buy a monitor with DVI attachment). I was planning on attaching my MacBook to a bigger monitor with this Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to VGA adapter (which I already had). Trying to plug the DVI-VGA adapter to the DVI end of this product I couldn't believe my eyes. Why on earth didn't Apple make this Mini DVI to DVI-I adapter?
I guess I just have to order a separate Mini DVI to VGA adapter.43 of 93 people found this useful

Be aware NOT FOR 12" POWERBOOK G4s
Written by RO from Amersham
04-Aug-2006
I bought this to use with my 12" Powerbook G4 just like it says in the description. Received it fine, uwrapped it and put it in the computer bag. A few days later I had to use it so pulled it out, went to plug it in and found that the mini-DVI socket on my Powerbook was different to the mini-DVI plug on the adaptor. So it is useless for the job it is advertised for.

apple strikes again
Written by GC from London

I bought a Mini-DVI adapter to use with my eMac and my TV set thinking that I could use it with my new MacBook... Alas! How was I mistaking! the 'Mini-DVI' port on my eMac is nothing like the 'Mini-DVI'port on the new MacBook, so why is apple introducing new standards bearing the same name? Why is Apple introducing incompatible adapters every generation? A very simple answer: just to suck up as much dinero as they possibly can. So disappointed.

Yet another cost!
Written by SV from London

I bought the MacBook Pro with the Apple wide screen, works great. Then I bought a MacBook foolishly thinking it would just work after all they are both new within a year, but Apple were one step ahead. The MacBook comes with a mini DVI so you need this adapter.
Yet another overpriced extra for an overrated machine!106 of 257 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Yes, you need one and yes, it works. That doesn't make it a good product.
Written by AB from TURKU
22-Jan-2008
The connector itself is barely satisfactory. It's poorly designed: heavy enough and loose enough to work its way out of the mini-DVI port, unless resting on a flat surface (which your lap isn't). It's ignorant: the mac will switch to dual-display mode as soon as the adapter is connected, even if the display at the other end is turned off. It's short: the cable is barely 6 cms, room enough only to bend, so this was a wasted opportunity for an extension. And as others have noted, the adapter is DVI-D not DVI-I, meaning you cannot attach a readily-available DVI->VGA adapter to it but have to buy yet another proprietary connector instead. (Contrary to what one commenter implied, this was not necessary to support dual-link cinema displays; DVI-I supports dual-link just as well as DVI-D.)
Then, yet another gripe about the connector's existence: there is ample room on even the smallest macbook (let alone iMac) to accommodate a full size DVI-I port, which takes care of DVI and VGA. Even if these mini-DVI connectors had a compelling reason to exist, Apple should have just bundled them with the macbook; like they do for the macbook air and the like they apparently used to for the powerbook. After the premium I paid for the macbook in the first place it's insulting to be nickel-and-dimed for adapter cables as well.

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Too expensive, should come in the box.
Written by TL from Leominster
13-Dec-2007
Ok, I'm sure this adapter will do what it needs to do for many years to come, but it should come in the box with new MacBook. Apple seem to have really cut down on the stuff they include in the box nowadays - my good old G4 PowerMac came with all sorts of cables included, five years ago.
I've never seen a monitor with a Mini DVI input, so if you want to add a 2nd display to your MacBook (which is pretty likely with its 13" display) you're going to need this adapter (assuming most people are using DVI now). Ok, MacBooks are at the budget end of Apple's computers, but they aren't exactly cheap, so please Apple - stop trying to rip us off even more. I like your computers, but get a bit sick of paying ridiculous prices for your extras!!
To top it off, I was charged a fiver for postage and the thing arrived via second-class royal mail post after FIVE DAYS! Sort it out Apple - we're getting a bit sick of this.73 of 109 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Might not be what you think
Written by PH from London
04-Feb-2008
Turns out that not all Apple DVI products are created equal. Bought this at the Apple store in London on Saturday since they don't stock the mini-DVI-to-VGA adaptor, thinking that I could just plug it into my existing DVI-VGA adaptor. No such luck, this one lacks the 4-pins-around-the-flat-thing interface.
Yet another example of why I love Apple products (usually) but hate buying from Apple themselves. You'd think that a company that so prides itself on design would take a bit more care with the customer experience.
This adaptor probably does what it says if the two things at either end are compatible. Just because you bought everything from Apple doesn't mean that they are... caveat emptor.48 of 78 people found this useful

DVI-D, not DVI-I
Written by JB from HOLYWOOD

The adapter works well enough, but make sure you know what you're buying; it's a DVI-D adapter, which means you can't use a VGA adapter on the end.

Another Be Careful Comment
Written by DE from Telford
23-Jan-2008
I bought this after reading all the comments about it not having the extra slots for a VGA adapter, since I was planning on using it on a DVI monitor anyway, but found out that my DVI cable needs those slots too. Before you buy I'd recommend looking at your DVI cable ends. If it has pins above and below the horizontal bar, this won't fit it.
Fortunately for me I also have a VGA monitor and I bought the mini DVI to VGA adapter at the same time, which has worked perfectly.70 of 110 people found this useful

Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter
Good but product description should be much clearer
Written by RJ from BRECHIN
24-Apr-2007
Apple does NOT make it clear in the product description that this adaptor CANNOT be used with the 867mHz G4 Powerbook 12".
That particular model Powerbook uses VGA video, so it cannot output to a DVI monitor, thus this adaptor is incompatible with that model.
This may be obvious to computer experts, but it should be made obvious in the product description because it is VERY confusing for the layman.24 of 49 people found this useful
