Mini DVI to DVI-D - you can't attach a DVI to VGA adapter

    Written by AK from Lahti

    12-Nov-2007

This adapter is useless for me (until I eventually buy a monitor with DVI attachment). I was planning on attaching my MacBook to a bigger monitor with this Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to VGA adapter (which I already had). Trying to plug the DVI-VGA adapter to the DVI end of this product I couldn't believe my eyes. Why on earth didn't Apple make this Mini DVI to DVI-I adapter?
I guess I just have to order a separate Mini DVI to VGA adapter.

    not compatable with dvi-vga!

    Written by SF from ABERDEEN

    09-Aug-2007

i bought this when my minidvi->vga died. i figured i could combine it with dvi-d->vga adaptor incase i got a dvi monitor in the future. but apparently this adaptor only carries the digital signal (shown by only about 10pins of the usual 24) and not the analogue. so now i gotta get another minidvi to vga :'(

apple needs to make it clear that this only provides a dvi-d signal and is NOT compatable with vga

    NICE AND EASY BUT!!!

    Written by RI from Northampton

    16-Jul-2007

This is a nice bit of kit, very simple to use on my MACbook Black. Just plug and play, the only problem is I can't get my 20" Lacie monitor to run at full resolution, which is the only drawback to this bit of kit, never the less, brilliant buy..

    Amazing bit of kit

    Written by SB from London

    17-Jun-2007

I use it to connect my iMac 20" DC to a 40" Bravia 40w , the picture is amazing , really impressed.

So much so , now I'm saving up for a Mac Pro and going to use the Bravia as my monitor now

1080P is perfect for a computer monitor imo.

This product is a bargain !

Not compatible with other DVI connections from Apple!!

    Written by MS from BANBURY

    31-May-2007

I bought this in the hope of being able to cover all bases when connecting a monitor. I already have a DVI to VGA adapter that came with, and fits my Mac Pro. I bought this MINI DVI to DVI adapter to for my MacBook so that I could use it with a DVI capable monitor if available. If not available, I was hoping to then connect my current DVI to VGA adapter on top of this to enable me to plugin a VGA monitor. Basically, in order to get a VGA screen to work I would plug in my MINI DVI to DVI, then connect my DVI to VGA to that so it is two adapters connected together. THEY'RE NOT COMPATIBLE THOUGH!! There is an alternative but at £95...

Two Apple products that don't fit together. That's just stupidity!

Every DVI cable or connection I have from Apple is a DVI-I Single or Dual, but this is a DVI-D Dual. Small, but vital differences which make them incompatible.

Even the packaging shows the product to be a DVI-I Single adapter, but what is enclosed is doesn't match the packaging!! This is not like you Apple, sort it.

Good but product description should be much clearer

    Written by RJ from BRECHIN

    24-Apr-2007

Apple does NOT make it clear in the product description that this adaptor CANNOT be used with the 867mHz G4 Powerbook 12".

That particular model Powerbook uses VGA video, so it cannot output to a DVI monitor, thus this adaptor is incompatible with that model.

This may be obvious to computer experts, but it should be made obvious in the product description because it is VERY confusing for the layman.

    Read the product description?

    Written by AP from NEWBURY

    31-Mar-2007

This product is fantastic, and does exactly what is described. It may appear to be a lot of money for an adapter but in all honesty there's no way to fault it.

People who have given negative reviews of this product have clearly not read the product description, specifically what mac works with the cable - it's obviously not going to work if you have a mac that is not listed by Apple in the product description.

    Good investment.

    Works Fine, but...

    Written by DK from Langley

    12-Mar-2007

I've given this 5 stars because it works just like its suppose to and I've had no problems with with. I have a couple of questions for Apple however: A. Why is it so over priced? That's quite alot to pay for a few inches of cable. and B. Why put a Mini-DVI on your machines in the first place? I have a MacBook and there is ample room on the side for a proper sized DVI port, and this is one of the smallest laptops around, so why bother?

Having said that however, it is an essential piece of kit if you want an external display or projector, and there is no other option to be honest. So go for it.

    Written by GM from GLASGOW

This adaptor works perfectly fine, but people keep buying it without reseraching and rating it low thanks to them not finding out which one they need such as the person with rev A PB12" with mini vga bought this mini dvi adpator, WRONG ONE!! Why should product rating suffer because they bought the wrong one? And the one with the eMac with mini VGA! check before you order!

    apple strikes again

    Written by GC from London

    26-Aug-2006

I bought a Mini-DVI adapter to use with my eMac and my TV set thinking that I could use it with my new MacBook... Alas! How was I mistaking! the 'Mini-DVI' port on my eMac is nothing like the 'Mini-DVI'port on the new MacBook, so why is apple introducing new standards bearing the same name? Why is Apple introducing incompatible adapters every generation? A very simple answer: just to suck up as much dinero as they possibly can. So disappointed.

Be aware NOT FOR 12" POWERBOOK G4s

    Written by RO from Amersham

    04-Aug-2006

I bought this to use with my 12" Powerbook G4 just like it says in the description. Received it fine, uwrapped it and put it in the computer bag. A few days later I had to use it so pulled it out, went to plug it in and found that the mini-DVI socket on my Powerbook was different to the mini-DVI plug on the adaptor. So it is useless for the job it is advertised for.

    DVI-D, not DVI-I

    Written by JB from HOLYWOOD

    29-Jul-2006

The adapter works well enough, but make sure you know what you're buying; it's a DVI-D adapter, which means you can't use a VGA adapter on the end.

Dont try and use with dvi-vga adapter!

    Written by VG from Dublin

    07-Jul-2006

When buying my Macbook I had the bright idea that I would only buy this adapter and then use one of the many dvi to vga adapters that I already own to "adapt" the dvi to vga when I needed it. Unfortunately Apple was one step ahead of me and have removed the holes in this dvi socket that pass through the vga connection. Ergo you are forced to buy yet another overpriced adapter from them in order to use a vga monitor! After buying vga and dvi adapters plus another adapter to connect to a TV you have ended up spending almost 60 euro on top of the already high cost of an apple machine! Most laptops and pc's come with at least 2 of these connections built in! I am very disappointed with Apple's actions in designing this product and hope for better service from them in the future.

    Just Works

    Written by NC from Burntisland

    04-Jun-2006

Ordered one of these with my new MacBook and it arrived in the box with the computer. Works great - turns the Mini DVI port into a DVI port. Runs fine with my Samsung and Dell LCD TVs. Remember though, this cable doesn't carry audio.

Worked with my iMac Core Duo too.

Included with the 12" Powerbook but buy an iMac and you have to pay extra. The port is useless without one so why bundle it with one machine but not the other?
