Airplay problems before firmware update & Router changes but worth the pain

Like most people reading the reviews I'd been looking for a decent speaker ideally with Airplay. I spent a bit of time researching everything from Bose (best audio but Bluetooth only...no Airplay), Libratone (most expensive, question over audio performance to due shape), iHome iW1 (portable but average audio) so decided on the Zeppelin Air.

First impressions looks slick, heavier than expected and great audio (position important...not too near a wall). Setup pretty straightforward but read the setup guide and follow the steps to avoid making mistakes or you'll be resetting it.

Airplay was one of the main reasons for purchasing the Zeppelin but was problematic until: 1) A firmware update (needs USB cable..not provided) and 2) Router setup changes as other wireless devices can mess up the airplay connection to your device. Playing around with your Router is the only way to sort it out so be prepared to turn off DHCP on the Zeppelin and assign a fixed IP address.

Really enjoying it now and works great with all my Apple devices.

    Amazing bit of sound technology

Like many of you reading these reviews, I too had been here lusting after a Zeppelin Air. The downside for me was the price. However, on Black Friday, Apple knocked £101 off the price which made it too good to resist, so I bought one!

The network setup was a little tricky and I had to rename my wireless network as the Zeppelin wouldn't connect. Managed to sort it out and since then the Zeppelin wireless connection has been rock solid. I'm using an Airport Extreme as my wireless router.

The sound is incredible provided you feed the Zeppelin quality music. Music at lower bit rates sound a bit tinny and empty. To get the best sound, I re-ripped my entire CD collection to Apple Loseless format, and the sound is so amazing. rich, and full of life, you can hear everything in perfect clarity.

Definitely worth buying if you want the ultimate in acoustic perfection, but be prepared to re-rip to get the best sound :)

The design of this product is a real head turner and the build quality is excellent unlike some of the competitors. When it comes to sound quality and the pure size of sound, strap your feet to the floor for it will blow you away.

Although it took a while to set up the Airplay feature, this cannot detract from what is an amazing product. The sound quality is exceptional and it must be the best speaker dock on the market.

The Zeppelin Air really is an incredible piece of kit. The sound produced by this thing really is amazing and actually outperforms the original Zeppelin that was already considered the best sounding dock on the market.

The red flashing light problem that people are speaking of is completely different on the Zeppelin Air than it was on the original Zeppelin as a firmware update will resolve the problem on the newer Air model.

As well as this, people encountering problems on the Zeppelin Air during setup need to consider the performance of the router it is connecting to - as this is a two way conversation between the router and Zeppelin Air.

So chuffed with mine. Love it to pieces and although it seems some people have encountered problems during setup... persevere and contact B&W directly for assistance - It will all be worth it in the end.

To treat myself last week I bought the Zeppelin Air from Bowers & Wilkins, a top of the line iPod dock. As a student I move around far too often to justify the cumbersome overhead associated with the conventional Amp & Speakers arrangement. (An efficient student is one who has streamlined their worldly possessions to a single car-full!) That, and my paranoia towards in-ear personal music as the leading cause of deafness at any early age, I believe I can justify the need for such a sophisticated piece of tech. (At least justify it enough so I can sleep at night without worrying about the price tag)

After keeping for company the Zeppelin Air for nearly a week I have never felt more connected with my music. The quality of the sound is incredibly rich and satisfying across all genres. The integration with iTunes for wireless streaming is a properly cool feature. The free-standing dock for all Apple iDevices makes it the only missing link to a holistic personal music solution. Perhaps it is still the honeymoon from an expensive new purchase that has me talking like this but I honestly believe the Zeppelin Air to be the second best piece of technology I have ever owned.

    Connection problems???

Have had my zeppelin for 3 months now. There was absolutely no problems connecting to my wifi I guess those with problems have had a bad outcome, but those who had zero issues enjoyed a beautiful sound to fill the room without any distortion.
The only issue is a slight lag when playing from my iPhone 4, but I do love my Zeppelin!
Those wanting to fork out the hefty price tag will love it, am guessing it's a minority who will have issues and complain and so bring this down from the rightly deserved 5star to 4star.

I have just taken delivery of a new Zeppelin Air.... Unboxed and connected to my WIFI network within 5 minutes and then it just works... The Zeppelin Air Sound Quality is fantastic and certainly does more than fill just one room with sound... Airplay is so easy with streaming from iTunes and from my iPhone... I have had my computer speakers blasting out the same tune in my study whilst also streaming to the Zeppelin air. I still find it amazing how the airplay/remote speakers option just magically appears when an airplay device is connected. Love this product, love the integration and still love the cradle that will come in handy at times to charge and play. The design is fantastic and the details such as the purple subtle LED when using airplay just do it for me.

The ideal speaker for my Apple products, good sound and easy to use with wifi. None of the other smaller systems I have tried come close. Price a bit on the high side though. I give it 5 stars.

I had absolutely no problems setting this up - it was up and running in less than 15 minutes. Sound via AirPlay is superb and I combine it with using the "Remote" app on my iPhone 3GS to select tracks from my iTunes library (which sits on my iMac).

I just closely followed the instructions in the supplied documentation and had no issues.

The sound is phenomenal - really rich and deep. It makes you fall in love with music all over again.

Bought this product a week ago. The unique feature of this product (AirPlay) is excellent. I was hesitant to buy this product for this price, but now I am satisfied after using it. A very stylish, ergonomically designed model that stands out of the crowd beating it's nearest rival Bose in both price and features. Will certainly recommend this to music lovers with style.

Like most Wi-Fi enabled add-ons it is hit and miss. I have got a Netgear rooter, set up took all of 5mins and never had a prblem. Sound is great as well.

Buy it, try it....take it back if it does not work, i had to do that with 4 wi-fi printers in the past, as i said hit and miss in the wi-fi world.

The sound from such a small compact unit is sublime blows my Bose dock out of the water, the odd issues of the wifi dropping out occasionally but we live in a converted barn with very thick walls that aside it's worth every penny.

I wanted a speaker system for the living room to run the iMac, macbook pro, iPad 2, iPods and TV from. I narrowed the selection down to the Libratone Beat and B&W Zeppelin Air. I went for the Air simply from the reviews and airplay capability. It turned up yesterday, purchasing to delivery was two days. It came out the box and wow... followed the instructions and it works like a dream such incredible sound from any device, anywhere in the apartment. Having a little trouble with its own remote but will get that sorted. Glad to make the investment, B& W don't half know how to make them, just wish I could afford the Nautilus speakers!!!

I had the mini which was wonderful, so I had to see how this could better it! Mainly I would say it offers more volume and of course bass, which you may not need. However I would agree with what B and W say on their web site in that this is not an iPod dock but a hi fi for the 21 century. Really great sound and more than enough power and bass to fill my house. Oh, the mid range and treble is great too of course.

The quality of sound from this speaker exceeds that of my B&W MM1's, just. And that's saying something. The ZA edges out the MM1s because ZA will fill a very large room with gorgeous, rich, warm music whereas the MM1s are designed to be heard at close quarters. As with the MM1s, there is a very effective sound-stage, giving each instrument its own space floating outside the speaker enclosure. It makes for mesmerising listening.

Treble is crisp and true; midranges are warm and open, bass is authoritative and tight.

The fact that the ZA uses its own high quality digital-to-analogue converter instead of the cheap one inside your computer/iPhone/iPad (even over AirPlay) raises the quality of the sound it produces way, way ahead of other speaker docks.

    Result: it sounds gorgeous.

AirPlay adds another dimension. (Unlike some reviewers I had no problems setting it up - it took no more than five minutes and worked first time). I use it with my O2 wireless router to stream music from my Mac Book Pro, iPhone and iPad. The Mac Book and iPad give a rock-steady feed that never drops. The iPhone link is prone to drop-outs maybe once each hour - it might be because of the poor phone reception in my area and interference from the phone's constant attempts to pick up a carrier. I don't know.

One thing is for sure: this is the best-sounding set of speakers I have ever bought and I absolutely recommend the ZA to anyone wanting to hear their favourite music at its very best.

The only criticism I have is that the bass is slightly too over-pronounced even when adjusted to the -3 setting provided by the speaker's software. An ability to go to -4 would be appreciated.

If you love music, its a no-brainer. Get one!

Speakers stop working after a while. NOT a speaker problem !

    Hi,

I bought my wife 3 zepplin air speakers and a MacBook Air for her 40th birthday.
We placed the speakers around the house and had everything setup in no time, it was very simple and everything worked brilliantly.

That was until we changed internet service providers and had BT Infinity installed along with a new BT router.

After setting the speakers up to connect to the new BT router, we discovered that the speakers would stop working after 24 hours. You could no longer see the speaker on the mac or iphone until you turn them off and on again at the mains.
I discovered it was because of a setting on the BT Router that meant that the connection the router had given to speaker ( The IP Address ) would expire after 24 hours.

To get around this you have to manually setup the speaker by unticking the DHCP tick box and allocate it an IP Address that falls outside of the range of IP addresses that the BT Router would allocate to the speaker using DHCP.

E.g. if the router is set to allocate IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.70 to 192.168.1.250 then you could allocate an IP address to the speaker of 192.168.1.60.

Now all is brilliant again !!
