Conversion to iPod H.264 video - Slow, but seems to work

    Written by DJ from Gloucester

Well, I read the first review here and decided I'd give it a go anyway even though the comments there indicated I'd have a few problems.

I upgraded to QT7 for the simple reason that I wanted to convert my video files to the new H.264 format that QT7 is supposed to support so I can get them working on my new video enabled iPod.

Initially I thought it didn't work.

QT7 Pro allows loading of MOV amd MPG files. No specific mention of H.264, but I made the bold assumption that the MOV files it saves would be H.264 so I went ahead and converted to MOV. These files failed to upload to my iPod because it could not play them (so I have to assume that means they weren't saved as H.264).

Then while writing a more negative review than this has turned out to be, I discovered the Export option. I'd have thought it would be under Save As... and set the format to H.264, but no, the one feature I want is hidden away in the Export option of the File Menu.

Ah well, now that I know that, it's OK. And hopefully you'll also know because you've read this review.

Conversion was very slow though. First MPG to M4V format (That's the iPod file type) has now worked so that's 100% success. (small sample size though, so confidence remains to be increased).

FYI - Platform was PC with XP Home and Service Pack 2 installed plus all relevant updates (I have auto update enabled).
