Helps a FREE 3rd Party Software convert MPEG files!

    Written by IW from LONDON

    20-Jun-2009

This software does enable you to see MPEG files - but if you want to convert MPEG files to MOV files you need the help of MPEG Streamclip (google it) which is a free download from a 3rd party company so that you have full sound with your clips.

I think why everyone who has purchased this has got angry is because it seems ridiculous to be buying a component from Apple and then having to download another application to make it work - and it seems ironic that we're paying Apple when it almost feels like it is the 3rd party who should be getting the dosh for providing the function we all bought it for.

To be honest I jut want to be able to buy something have it work, rather than have to find a review or a web discussion about what additional software I need to make MPEG files into MOV files.

So if that's what you want your plug in and play Mac to do: buy this, then go to www.squared5.com and get the free download and it will probably take you 20 mins tops. I just feel that it should be a one stop shop and that should come with the security of it being an Apple one stop shop.

    Works perfectly, ignore the nay-sayers

    Written by ML from BRIGHTON

Frankly I cannot understand all the one starrers out there.

There seem to be a lot of people having problems with audio. If, for example, you're wanting to extract the contents of a DVD so you can edit them in say Final Cut, you'll need to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files ripped from the DVD to a codec that editing packages understand. Without the QT MP2 Playback installed (at the time of writing, Feb09, onto QT Player 7.6) this isn't possible.

In your editing package you may need to render the clips you export from MPEG Streamclip in order to be able to hear the audio, though in iMovie '08 I don't even think that's necessary.

The thing couldn't possibly be simpler or cleaner to use!

DOWNLOAD: the download tab is right there on your receipt when you buy the thing. It's the word highlighted in blue in your order summary and it reads, cryptically enough I admit, "Download" with a little downward pointing blue arrow next to it.

It's tip top, don't diss it.

Perfect for converting DVDs in MPEG Streamclip

    Written by SW from WITHAM

MPEG Streamclip suggested I download this component when I attempted to convert a DVD into web format (in this case flv). It worked first time and perfectly. I'd spent ages trying to find a decent converter and have found this to work adequately, and has cured my headache!

    It just works

    Written by KF from BRADFORD

    25-Jan-2009

I had problems with iMovie 08 recognising my Sony HDRSR12E Hard disc video camera. The genius bar showed me how to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to DV format.
Unfortunately I had to purchase the playback component, but once installed it worked just fine. One point worth mentioning though is that when reviewing the converted footage in Quicktime, you can't hear the audio. However once you've imported it into iMovie 08 it's all there.
It only gets 4 stars because of the cost. I think it should be an integral part of Quicktime.

    Too many restrictions

Written by GL from Long Beach

No video plays, only audio. Can only play certain types of mpg files, and certain types of audio files. Not really worth 20 bucks at all. Should be less than 5 at most. Don't waste your money.

    Audio but no video

    Written by MP from HOVE

    28-May-2008

I have just bought this so that I could view some mpeg 2 files which previously weren't playing in Quicktime Pro at all. It now plays but I only get audio and no video and I can't find a support page to tell me what's going on. This is rubbish!

    Simple and successful

    Written by JR from Huddersfield

    17-Apr-2008

I discovered that imovie could not import a dvd from my camcorder. The help file suggested 3rd party software. I quickly found mpeg streamclip and easily downloaded it for free from the apple store. When I started it up it asked for the mpeg 2 playback plug in for quicktime and informed me I could purchase this from apple for about £15. I decided to do this and downloaded the plug in. It installed effortlessly and mpeg streamclip now produces great mp4 that I can edit in imovie. Total time 20mins - hardly a challenge!

    Quicktime-Pro with Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Plug-in

    Written by RS from Portsmouth

    27-Feb-2008

Having bought Quicktime-Pro and the MPEG2 player plug-in I do not have the facility to trim MPEG2 movie files. It's is not made clear in the advertising that Quicktime-Pro will only playback MPEG2 files and not allow you to edit them (the trim function is disabled for MPEG2 only?) once you have downloaded the QT MPEG2 Player. This is disappointing and probably means that I've wasted my money! For the most part I like Apple but when they upset you they really get under your fingernails!

No Good for .MOD / mpeg 2 files!

    Written by CN from Ashtead

    13-Jan-2008

I bought this so I could 'see' the .MOD files that the Panasonic SDR-H20 camera uses... .MOD is an mpeg 2 variant. However, once this plug was installed... QuickTime opened the file... GREAT PICTURE, NO SOUND! So... if you have .MOD files, drop them into TOAST TITANIUM and choose 'Disc/Export Video'... shame I didn't work that out before wasting my hard earned cash! I love Apple... but why am I increasingly having to use third party alternatives... what's going on Steve?

.mpg to mp4 conversion with audio

    Written by KB from Hull

    21-Aug-2007

When used for the above, this Quicktime Add-On was needed for running alongside MPEG Streamclip.

These two applications combined allowed me to convert .mpeg footage files from a non-mac-compatible camcorder (Sony HD 2007) to mp4 files that could be played back and edited in iMovie HD. Although i must add that i have Quicktime Pro (which allowed me to send the files to MPEG Streamclip).

Also, the audio didn't play back in Quicktime, which is why i needed MPEG Streamclip, which solved that issue.

This software was easy and fast to download.

    MPEG-2 Plug-in

    Written by LJ from Shipley

    16-Jun-2007

Unlike some reviewers, had no problem downloading or installing. But disappointed that there is no sound with my digital camcorder files in QT7 that are recorded in this format so mandating the plug-in. Also not impressed by the £15 UK price v. $19.99 US price!

    mpeg component

    Written by HR from BODMIN

    18-Apr-2007

Does not work properly in several apps - no sound. Works brilliantly with MPEg streamclip.
Impossible to upgrade it to new version when it says you need to upgrade. This was triggered by my upgrading to the newest version of quick time which also told me to upgrade. Apple apparently do not know what to do when contacted! Only option seems to be to repurchase the component again.
I wonder if there is a solution for a pc?

Great Product - but annoying gap in download instructions

Written by SH from MILTON KEYNES

    07-Apr-2007

Works flawlessly - using to play back .rec files with MPEG Streamclip. But inadequate instructions, once you have paid, leave many customers intensely frustrated, and in the dark about where to find download. “The download button” it says – but where? No sign of such a button on the final page. Maybe on an email? No email arrives. Apple customer service say many people have complained (see also comments in other reviews) but they are seemingly helpless to do anything. Perhaps a clueless customer can help where salaried Apple staff seem powerless.

Use the "your account" tab to login and download away. May seem absurdly obvious, but the tabs are generally so useless on this site and the structure so labyrinthine, that the “your account” concept can easily end up invisible here, unlike on, say, Amazon where its clearly signposted at every turn. Ho-hum. I love Apple but this site conspicuously has potential for improvement

    No Audio

    Written by DL from Edinburgh

    02-Apr-2007

Like a couple of the others, I should have read the reviews, wanted it to play VOB file, which it does, would be good if I could hear teh audio though as it does not play it!!!!!! And like one of the other fellow reviewers, I do think that Apple could be clearer within the product description on what the software does and does not do, especially for the lay-man.

    Works perfectly and installs effortlessly.

Written by RC from East Molesey

    13-Mar-2007

I purchased this component as it was required by MPEG Streamclip for converting .vob format files to mpeg4. This mpeg2 playback is a component of the computer itself rather than a software component.

Despite what a few have said on here, the install was hilariously easy (but then again, aren't all Mac installations?!) and the component immediately enabled MPEG Streamclip to do its task.

A great (and for some - necessary) little component for a sensible price and a must-have if one is intending to convert DVDs for playback on ipod. Worth every penny.

    Not for me

    Written by RP from London

    06-Oct-2006

I received several MPEG-2 files for broadcast and tried this for viewing.
CONFUSING - demands QT6, when QT7 is in play, download folder is named "For QuickTime 6.3" - is anyone awake there at Apple Store? Says use QT Updater to install - NO!, that's a link to 3rd party plug ins.
DIDN'T WORK. "The movie could not be opened" alert on atteemption to open all files. Unhelpful.
INSTALLED? Installer said successful, but QT preference panes do not indicate if installed or not.
Maybe we got sent some duff files, but this purchase & install procedure is rubbish on its own, and leaves me in the dark about bth installation and file status

    Adding Audio

Written by DW from Los Angeles

    01-Jul-2006

If you demux (Change from one DVD file into two elemental stream files .m2v and an audio file) and then convert the audio file into at least an .aiff file (not sure if mp3 will work), quicktime player will play back the audio. The trick is to make sure both files have the exact same name except for the extension. "FamilyOuting.m2v" and "FamilyOuting.aiff" Double Click the .m2v file and quicktime player (with the MPEG2 component installed) will load up both picture and audio.
