this is so users can use any previously owned cellphone charger that has been made mandatory by the EU. so if you have another phone that has a microUSB plug, you can use that charger with this. the spirit of the law was to stop the absurd amount of varied chargers that end up getting tossed out or otherwise complicating the task of replacing it.
if you desperately must use something other than desribed above and using the original cable and usb power adapter that came with your phone just isnt good enough, you can buy a microUSB cable from any electronics store.- Answered by Mark O from Federal Way

The EU decided on having one port for all mobile devices so that when you changed your phone you didn't need to have a new lead. There used to be a time when you had a Nokia lead and a Sony Ericsson lead etc. Now all you need is a micro-USB that is supported by all phones as well as other devices like the Kindle. The only one that hasn't decided to change is Apple but they have supplied this so that they conform to the ruling

It works with my 4th Generation iPod touch. I assume it works with older iPod touches as well, because it is compatible with older iPhones.
