Can I back up the contents of the Time Capsule to an external hard drive for further data security?
I like to back up my back up drive on an external HD and store offsite. Will Time Capsule backup to an external HD. It doesnt have to be a Time Machine type backup just the files on the Time Capsule including the .macbackup file that Time Machine creates.

Yes, you can copy (clone) the Time Machine contents of the Time Capsule to an external hard drive.
Just be aware that cloning any backup is not as reliable (error-free) as cloning the original data.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Why a Mac Time Capsule? Can't I just use Time Machine to back up to ANY external HD?
Isn't a Time Capsule just an overpriced external HD? What does it do that a LaCie 1 TB drive doesn't?

You can use any external HD to backup with Time Machine. But the Time Capsule is a router with a hard drive built in. This allows you to create a wireless network, and backup with Time Machine wirelessly. And multiple computers can use the hard drive from all over your network to perform backups with Time Machine. And you can also attach a printer to the router as well to print wirelessly through your network. Basically, Time Capsule is just an Airport Extreme with an included hard drive.

two macs, one time capsule?
I have two macBooks, want to maintain separate disk images for each machine through my Time Capsule, can I do it and how?
or should I even bother since I built my new MacBook Pro off the disk image of my old MacBook and it worked great, if the new machine crashes I'll have an image and can restore to the old machine, and if the old machine craters I'll have the image from the new one to restore to another new machine?

You can certainly use Time Capsule for Time Machine back ups from two or more Macs, space being the only limiting factor. Time Capsule stores your back ups as Sparse Images, one for each machine. These images can be used to restore/rebuild your Mac, although they are not bootable.
The main difference with this solution and your dual machine swappable images is that Time Machine back ups will be up to date with the latest data, apps etc.
Belt and braces is always a good idea with back ups so a clean start image would be handy to have as well. You could use this and then use Migration assistant to pull selective data from your Time Machine back ups.- Answered by Nigel M

will time capsule work with windows 7?
- Asked by Stewart J from Niceville
- 13-Nov-2009

Best Answer
Yes, it does. You just have to install the airport drivers with the CD-ROM for it to work properly. I have used my time capsule for a year now as a server drive for people using OS X, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. All platforms work just fine. The only modern OS that I am aware of that doesn't function properly with it is Linux; but if you're tech savvy enough I'm sure there's even a way to do that.

Do I have to format the TC's hard drive like I would a standard external if I want some space for Time Machine and some space for data?
I'd like to use it for both - a TM back-up as well as a shared iPhoto Library, shared iTunes, etc. How difficult is this? Do I have to allocate the space myself or will the TC do it for me?

No, you do not have to partition or format the Time Capsule's hard drive to use it for storage or Time Machine. The Time Capsule is some what like a mini computer that is sharing it's hard drive, Your computers (both Mac and PC) can access the drive using Apple's Bonjour networking technologies. The Time Machine backup system houses your data in a chronological folder structure. You can use the Time Capsule's hard drive for either or both, just keep in mind that the more space you use up on the hard drive the less space Time Machine has to use for backup's.

Is there a bare metal type recovery with Time Machine+TimeCapsule so I can completely recover a lost disk drive?
With some backup technologies you have a bootable CD that you can boot with and then do a complete recovery (Windows Home Server has this for PC's, for instance). Can I do that or similar with Time Machine and Time Capsule?

Answer
You can use a Mac OS X installation disk (Leopard and up if I'm not mistaken) and use the Time Machine restore at boot time to restore the settings from a previous Mac.
Mac OS will detect your TC and restore your hard-drive as per the TC image. I've done this once as a life-saver. It was slow (using gigabit Ethernet) but that's because my TC is the first model which is painfully slow. Nevertheless, I was up and running in hours, and the peace of mind of having my entire system and settings restored to perfection is priceless.- Answered by Ricardo S

Can I increase the memory of time capsule? Perhaps by adding another hard drive to my 50 gig hard drive?

Answer
Time Capsule has no user-accessible memory, but has storage capacity. You can use a powered USB hub to connect additional external hard drives. If desired, one or more of such drives could then be used as a destination drive for Time Machine.

Can it back up 2 devices?
Can I use TC to back up an iMac and a 2nd computer that is a Windows PC?
- Asked by David C from Scottsdale

Answer
Yes, but I wouldn't advise it. Time Machine always fills the backup disk to capacity, so unless you can live with the possibility of running out of space at any moment, I shouldn't do it. You could use an external hard disk to overcome that limitation (though this will kill performance for that disk) and you could hack around with pre-allocating disk space (which is a technically complicated operation and also kills some performance) or you could just not bother. :-)
Unless/until Apple supports the partitioning of the internal Time Capsule disk, I suggest that you share a network volume to your Windows box from your Mac. Now, back up your Windows box to your Mac, and the lot goes into one Time Machine backup set (but, at the expense of disk space on your Mac, sorry). An important precondition for this to work: your iMac will have to come online, or be online, when your Windows box wishes to back up to disk, so plan accordingly.- Answered by Sabahattin G

Will Time Capsule allow backup of our MacBook Pro with OSX 10.4.11 prior to upgrading our operating system?

Answer
Yes, Time Capsule will allow the backup. Of course, your OS X 10.4.11 does not contain Time Machine software, so you will be using Disk Utility or third-party software to perform the backup.

can you have multiple time capsules on the same network?
Looking to replace my first gen Time Capsule with a newer model with more HDD and dual-band capacity. Can I keep my old TC on the network when I upgrade to the new one and put the old one in bridge mode to expand the wireless network? And can I backup to BOTh devices, either redundantly or assigning different devices to different TC’s?
In terms of dual-band, am I better off using the old TC to create a separate network for b/g devices and use the new one exclusively for n devices, or will the new one handle dual-band adequately so the b/g signals won’t slow down n devices?- Asked by Jason S from Cranbury

Hi there,
You can have more than one time capsule on a network - however your mac can only be set up to back up to one time capsule at a time.
As for setting up one time capsule on one band (b/g) and the other on N, there is really no point. The new time capsule is set up to be dual band from get go - what devices are using your network will more stipulate what you should do with the second time capsule (i.e. the 'bridge' or 'extender' time capsule).
If you only have devices capable of using the 5Ghz N band, I would just stick with this as your 'bridge' band for the older time capsule. Let the new time capsule be the dual band emitter, and use this for iPhones, etc.
If, however, you mainly have older computers not capable of using the 5Ghz N network, or if your network is mainly iPhones, iPads and other b/g devices, then I would stick to these bands for your 'bridge' network, and just have your mac on the N band for its high speed time capsule stuff.
Also, don't forget that you can use your time capsule's hard drive as a remote access 'server'. You can also plug additional storage into the usb ports which can be wirelessly accessed across your network.
Hope this helps!- Answered by Martin S from Caulfield South

Does TC work like Airport Express?
Meaning that:
1> When setup in Bridge Mode it connects wirelessly to my current WAP (Wireless Access Point), and will it also be a WiFi repeater?
2 > The Ethernet Ports work as a switch so when other devices are plugged in, they too will wirelessly connect to my home network?
3> The USB Port can be used to connect as a network printer (with Bonjour)?
4> And by doing all of the above it can hopefully still be used by my MAC's to do wireless Time Machine backups?- Asked by Jerry H from Lake Mary

No, Time Capsule does not work like AirPort Express. However, it does work like an AirPort Extreme due to the fact that an AirPort Extreme is included in the case as part of a Time Capsule. It will do everything you have asked. It will extend a non-Apple wireless network, but it does not stream music.

Can the Time Capsule be hooked up directly to my iMac and be used as a wireless network extender at the same time?
I have a Airport Express hooked to my DSL modem in another room and use my Time Capsule as network extender. The Time Capsule is in the office with my iMac. Is it possible to use the Time Capsule as a wireless network extender and also hook it up to my iMac via "hard-wire" so that I get the fastest data transfer speed available. Being that it sits right next to the iMac, I don't mind hooking it up directly to it.

I'm thinking of buying a Time Capsule so i was wondering if i can i attach a usb dongle to creat a wifi network?
i currently live on a military base and there is no option get landline based internet connection so i use a usb dongle. i was wondering if it was possible to connect it to the time capsule to create my own mini wifi network instead of running usb extension cables everywhere.

You can't connect the USB dongle to Time Capsule. The USB port is purely for Printers and Hard Drives.
You don't say if you use a Mac, but if you do, you could create a mini wifi network by using the dongle with the Mac and enabling Internet Sharing in the Sharing Preferences. This would share the broadband from your dongle to any other wifi devices within range of your Mac.
This set up would also allow you to configure Time Capsule to join the wifi network created by your Mac and give you the back up, print and storage services that Time Capsule provides.- Answered by Nigel M
