can I connect multiple Extremes with Cat5 to extend range
I'm trying to provide WiFi signal to our entire church. All areas, with the exception of the sanctuary, receive a signal from a central router; however, the sanctuary is enclosed by metal, and the WiFi signal will not penetrate. I've tried to extend the network into the sanctuary using an Airport Express, but we can't get enough signal. I would like to connect 2 or more Airport Extreme's with Cat5, with one of the Extreme's inside the sanctuary. Can this be done ???

Best Answeryes this is exactly what you need to do. its a basic network layout. multiple access points hard wired together. in fact you don't need 2 extremes. if you can plug a cat 5 (or higher) cable into your current router just run that to a central point in the sanctuary and plug it into your extreme. you then set the extreme up in bridge mode. i.e. it will share the routers internet connection. set the wireless network name (SSID) on the extreme to be the same as the main router but choose a different channel number to the router preferably at the opposite end of the spectrum e.g. 1 and 11 so they don't interfere and away you go. of course it will be easier if your router is an apple product as well as you can just use the airport utility to set them both up - but no need to replace it as it seems to be working fine. i have this setup - old thick walled house +barn i have centrally located time capsule + 2xcat 5 cables 1 to one end of house 1 runs underground to the barn. both plugged into time capsule both end in an extreme - same SSID different channels - wifi everywhere.
In fact there is no reason why you can't do it with your current express or at least give it a go. plug it in - in the sanctuary & run a cat5 cable to it from your router and do the same setup. only thing is it won't have as big a range as the extreme partly as plugged in the wall. the extreme can go ideally above head height in the middle of where you need it to be. (btw positioning can be very important)
hope this helps.- Answered by Neil P

Since someone bumped this on the 3... Yes, my brand new AE is connected to a 6120 and working fine. Plugged into the modem, power cycled the modem. Waited for it to come online then plugged in the AE and used the airport utility to configure the AE. Everything working fine. The only thing that maybe different for me from others is I work for my ISP and as such my 6120 is uncapped and wide open.

Can I configure the Airport Extreme Base Station to be a VPN host so I can securely access my home network from my Iphone?
I would like to access my home network from my Iphone using the native VPN client. Does the Airport Extreme Base station support this?
- Asked by Rick G from Downingtown

Best AnswerThe sort answer to this is no. The Airport Base Station is not capable of doing this, to do this you will have to run a VPN host on a computer inside your network and use the Airport Base Station to forward the ports required for VPN to that computer on your network.

"Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort Extreme", which are these?
I am currently with Taltalk is this ISP compatable?
- Asked by Graham P

Best AnswerAll ISP are compatible however you will need a separate modem for ADSL connections. For TalkTalk if you were given an ADSL modem with an Ethernet port, you shouldn't need to buy anything else. If you were given a modem that only uses a USB port, then you will have to purchase something like a Netgear DG834G.

Will the floor interfere with my connection?
I have my desktop upstairs and my laptop a floor below in the basement.
- Asked by Melissa W from Chambersburg
- 28-Dec-2009
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerYes, the floor will add interference. The routers are pretty good about things like this, but you may find signal issues. 2.4GHz isn't an amazingly strong signal and you'll have issues with interference from cordless phones, dark surfaces, etc. . . If you have your airport near the staircase. Reflections from the walls of the stairwell will help your signal because its acting as more of a line of sight connection.

Does apple make a device that I can use to connect my stereo amplifier to my laptop PC wirelessly?
I want to use my PC (or iPad 1) to play my music library through my amplifier using iTunes. At the moment I have a Logitech Squeezebox streaming radio which is Ok but unreliable.
I have an apple TV which works over my existing (BT Home hub ) network and want to add my amplifier to the wireless net.
What hardware would I need?- Asked by Keith D

Can Airport Extreme extend the range of a Time Capsule?
I have a Time Capsule connected to my DSL modem. My WiFi is already extended with an Airport Express. I would like to add an Airport Extreme to extend to a different part of the house and also because i need 2 or 3 wired internet connections there. Will this work and is it necessary to turn off router functions in the Airport Extreme if the TC is already my router?
- Asked by Steven S from Encino
- 07-Jan-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerI am preparing to do the same thing as you. I already have Time Capsule, and Airport Express, and will be purchasing an Airport Extreme for a different part of the house for hard-wire connections.
From what I understand, any of these devices can act as the primary router, and any of these devices can extend that range. By default, all of them are configured to be the primary router (if you change nothing), but if you plug it into your existing router (for initial setup purposes), and turn on your Mac, it will automatically walk you through the steps. I think the first question it asks if you want to extend your existing network. Once you select Yes, it does the rest for you, and you can safely unplug it and move it to its new location where it will extend your network.- Answered by Steven C from Cocoa

Can I use AirPort Extreme without a.dedicated computer
On system requirements is says mac or PC so does it mean AirPort Extreme does not work without one computer being permanently connected
- Asked by Stephen C
- 16-Oct-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes, you can use Airport Extreme without a dedicated computer connected to it, however you'll need some type of device to set it up initially such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, etc. Once the Airport Extreme is setup, then it will work stand alone. There is an Airport Utility App for iphone/ipad and the Airport Utility is included on any Mac and can be downloaded to a PC. You'll need the Airport Utility to setup the Airport Extreme to give it a name, password, etc.

Best Answer
You can do this two ways. 1 - You can buy an airport express and set it up to "extend" the network. It picks up signals form the airport extreme wirelessly and re-broadcasts them to extend the range. 2 - You can use an airport express or an airport extreme that is connected to the initial airport extreme through an ethernet network (my house is wired for this with a LAN jack in every room). This provides the best result but you have to setup the 2nd airport extreme or express exactly the same as the first (same network name (SSID), same network password, same "create a network" option) except in bridge mode. The documentation for this is terrible but the result is very good. Apple tech support can help. It was such a hassle to figure out but in the end it was simple to setup. I should post something to save others the pain of it all but again apple tech support can help. For most option 1 is probably fine and frankly most people won't ever even need that. I hope that helps

AnswerI would say yes as wireless hardware is vastly superior today than 6 years ago. Also, in my experience, wireless gear tends to degrade in performance and reliability with age.

what is the difference between the express and the extreme?
We have an I-Mac and PC laptops with wireless printer. We want to replace our existing router due to unreliable service between both computers and are considering adding a future Macbook Pro. What base station will work for us best?

Best AnswerThe Express is physically smaller and has two Ethernet ports (10/100 Megabit) for devices (one for the WAN) while the Extreme has 4 (1 Gigabit) ports (one for the WAN, 3 for other devices)
The Express can share a printer while the Extreme can share USB printers or USB hard drives.
The Express natively supports AirPlay (stream music to wireless speakers) and has an analog/optical audio jack on it.
THe Express has an internal power supply while the Extreme uses an external power "brick"
The Extreme supports advanced features like RADIUS authentication

I need an additional Hard Drive to move my stored movies from my Mac, which one suitable & will I be able to access them from Apple TV?
Mac & Apple TV Hard Drive
- Asked by Andy G from Petersfield
- 12-Apr-2010
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerThere are two parts to this question. The first part of this answer is "none"; Apple TV will not recognise additional media attached to it through either the Ethernet or USB ports.
However, because Apple TV is designed to operate just like any other iPod, it relies on having access to an iTunes library stored on your computer.
Because your iTunes library resides on your computer system, this brings the second part of this answer into relevance; it is very much possible to attach an external hard disk drive to your computer and move your iTunes media to the new drive in order to take advantage of more space. And because Apple TV can either sync or stream media from your computer's iTunes library, your Apple TV will automatically gain from these advantages.
The idea behind Apple TV's internal hard disk storage is to cache (temporarily store) the most-often or most-recently acquired media and have it available for instant access. However, if you have a large iTunes library and you want to expand it further, all you need to do is expand your Mac's storage capacity instead. Apple TV, whether by syncing or streaming, can access your entire iTunes library in any case.
And don't forget to consider a backup strategy for your Mac whilst you're considering expanding your iTunes library!- Answered by Tony K from Theodore
