External Hard drive attached to AirPort Extreme Base Station questions ?
Hi,
A few questions below
1) What is the file system that the External Hard drives mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station uses ?
Is it HFS ? I need network attched storage for HFS format to store iphoto libraries across computers without have both turned on . I have NAS support now for NTFS and EXT3 but iphoto does not work on those partition types very well.
2) If I set up the hard drive mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to have multiple partitions will all of those portions be seen by my MAC computers? I.e if I set up a partition for time machine of a macbook, a partition for a time machine of a mac mini, and then a third for data sharing will all be mounted and seen by the macs.
3) Can you rsync a hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to another hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station if using a external hub . . I.e create a backup copy of the HFS drive .- Asked by Ryan A from West Townsend

Best Answer1. Yes, it supports NTFS.
2. Officially, you cannot use a multi-partition HD as an AirDisk. It may work, and each be seen by multiple Macs.
Using Time Machine with an Airport is NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED by Apple.
It works well for some, not so well for some, and not at all for others.
This forum will not let me post a link to the Apple Technical article, but here's how to find it:
Go to apple.com (slash) support (slash) snowleopard. Select Time Machine, then Other Time Machine articles, then the one titled "Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Extreme AirPort Disks."
If you have a problem with this configuration and call AppleCare, you'll get little help, if any.- Answered by James P from Clermont

How to you set up an airport extreme with an existing dsl router / modem combo?
I have a 2wire AT&T router / modem combo. How do I setup an airport extreme with the existing dsl router without buying a stand alone modem? Or would it be better to have a stand alone modem? Are there some settings in the 2wire router I need to change? Please no acronyms...I push enough buttons to eventually get things to work, but I am not a computer genius, hence my desire to switch to macs. Thanks

Best AnswerNo need to buy a stand-alone modem.
Turn off the wireless function of the 2wire modem/router by opening a web browser and typing:
gateway.2wire.net
into the address bar. Click the Home Network tab. Under Local Interfaces find and click "Disable" next to Wireless.
Install onto your computer the software from the AirPort CD that is included with the base station. Remove the CD. Before you plug in the AirPort Extreme, first connect the appropriate cables to the ports you want to use:
Connect the Ethernet cable from the "modem" port of the 2wire to the single Ethernet WAN port of the AirPort.
Connect a USB cable from the USB port on the AirPort Extreme to a
compatible USB printer (if you will print to a USB printer), a hard disk, or a hub.
Connect an Ethernet cable from any Ethernet device (including an Ethernet printer or multi-function) to the Ethernet LAN ports.
After you have connected the cables for all the devices you plan to use, connect the AC adapter to the power port, and plug your AirPort Extreme into a power outlet. There is no power switch.
In a few minutes the Extreme's status light will continually flash amber. Open the utility "AirPort Utility" now located on your computer, select your base station after it has been discovered, click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to create a new network.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Multiple AirPort Expresses on 1 Airport Extreme
My Primary network is through an Airport Extreme. I have an existing Airport Express which I use to drive PC speakers for iTunes music and as an Ethernet connection for my DirecTV DVR. This Express connects to network wirelessly.
I want to add another ethernet connection in yet another room. Will my Airport Extreme be able to "drive" two different Airport Expresses wirelessly?
The existing Express and Extreme are the current models in the Apple Store.
Thank you and have a nice day.- Asked by Gordon P from Atlanta

Best AnswerAs long as its the same music from iTunes then no problem. Using ethernet on the second wouldn't be a problem either. Either extend or join your Airport Extreme again.
If you wanted to have different music on each express you'd need two iTunes serving each one, and two Macs.- Answered by Charlie M

Will Airport Extreme Base Increase my file transfer and streaming speed
I have an older Verizon Wireless Router that connects all the devices including the verizon services. Will an Airport Extreme Base Station increase my file transfer and viewing from my Mac Mini to Macbook? Is it best to connect to the internet router (verizon) via an ethernet cable or wireless? Would more memory on the Mac Mini increase the file display speed?
- Asked by Raymond K from Flower Mound

Best AnswerConnect via Ethernet to the Verizon Router. Disable wifi from the Verizon router to minimise interference.
It should dramatically speed file transfer. If you connect via 5GHZ N it will more than double the speed.
RAM's never a bad thing, if you've got the spare $s then why not. But if it's the current gen Mini it's not necessary to upgrade it to transfer files.
If you want blazing fast speeds, invest in some SSD on the machines you read and write from/to. Combined with the AE you'll see a massive improvement.- Answered by Charlie M

AnswerIt is industry standard WiFi, just like you'd find in a coffee shop. Nothing else is needed. Go to the AirPort icon in your menu bar, select "Create Network", and the iMac becomes your wireless base station.

Yes, the AirPort Extreme Base Station definitely is compatible with Windows 7.
If a Windows 7 computer will be performing setup and administration of the base station, first install the software to the computer from the included CD before connecting the base station to anything.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Can the 5th gen Airport Extreme play music without the Airport Express? If I want to play music, do I only need Airport Express?
I am looking to play music wireless throughout my house. Do I need an Airport express or extreme? Would it be useful for me to get the extreme is my main purpose is playing music wirelessly throughout my home? I can see the uses for the extreme but I am not sure. Also, do I need an extreme for every set of speakers in the house? Whats the best way to set it up?
- Asked by Ruchika C from Piscataway

AnswerHi
If you want to play music throughout your house than it is recommended that you use the Airport Express rather than the Airport Extreme. On the Airport Express, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack available to be connected to audio devices. The Airport Extreme does not have this headphone jack. In regards to the set up of every Airport device for every speaker, yes you will need each Airport device dedicated for each speaker.
My best recommendation for you is to use the Airport Expresses for each speaker you want music played to. Also a Airport Extreme Base station as a primary wireless router that is connected to your computer that has iTunes and content that you want to stream to your speakers.

is the version 5.5.2 of airport utility reliable?
I have previously agreed to update airport as suggested by software update (automatically) but my network would not work at all and I had to re-install EVERYTHING including the system. This was about 2 years ago. Once bitten twice shy. I have never updated the airport software since and wanted to know if there were any known problems before I do.

AnswerCertainly is reliable, as I'm using it with a four-year old 802.11n Extreme, as well as with current model Extremes on five different networks.

Will the newest version of the Airport Extreme work with Windows 7? Not just Windows XP or Windows Vista.
I have an iMac 24in" computer that I completely love but my laptop I am considering upgrading it to Windows 7. Now if I do this, do I just have to instal the AirPort Utility v.5.5 and it will still work?

How can I print wirelessly if the printer will not be wired to the primary base station? Do I have to buy 2 base stations and hook one to printer?
- Asked by Monica E from Tampa
- 29-Dec-2009
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerAny printer you connect to a network must be a network printer, otherwise it's only meant to work for a single computer and you would connect it directly to that computer. You print wirelessly with it if it is capable of 802.11a, b, g, or n wireless so that it can communicate with the AirPort base station.
If your printer is not wireless and will not be wired to the Extreme or to any computer, you could add a wireless module to the printer, replace the printer with a wireless printer, or buy an AirPort Express or second AirPort Extreme.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

If I buy the new 21.5 iMac, do I have to buy a separate wireless extreme, or does it come inside the computer?
- Asked by Christopher T from Binbrook

AnswerThe new iMac comes with AirPort connectivity built in. You would be able to use it with an existing wireless network if you already have one set up. If you don't have a wireless network, you would need to get a Base Station like this one of an AirPort Express.

So I have Verizon FiOs, which came with the Verizon Router/Modem. Will Airport replace this modem? And what other products will expand the range?

Best AnswerThe Airport Extreme wouldn't replace your Verizon modem since that is your gateway. You could simply attach an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the Verizon modem to the WAN port on the Airport Extreme and create a new/stronger/more capable network. While you're at it you may want to disable the wireless network on your Verizon modem by typing in 192.168.1.1 into your browser then entering admin and password1
Next you can go to Advanced Wireless Setup and click the disable button under the Wireless.
This way you won't have two wireless networks in your house and will essentially be using your Verizon at an ethernet gateway and your new airport as the wireless access point. Then you can utilize the USB port for wireless printing or sharing a hard drive.
As far as expansion- you could create a WDS network by adding extremes/expresses to relay the signal but this will slow down your network speeds. Ideally, you should position your router in your home for optimal coverage.- Answered by Nathan C from Tampa
