I want to use a firewire source that has audio I want to ignore and import from a separate microphone at the same time. Is this possible with FCE?

I was told that I could use iMovie to record from a firewire source (an olympus endoscope system) that has an audio signal that I want to ignore, and record useful audio from a USB microphone, combining the video from the firewire and the audio from the USB sources into a single import. It doesn't work in iMovie, but if it will work in FCE then I will purchase it. Having purchased iWorks just to solve this I don't want to buy yet another program does not work as promised. Please let me know if you can replace an audio signal with another as described above.

Can Final Cut Express open a project created in Final Cut Pro (minus any Final Cut Pro-specific features?)

I had a professional create a video for me in Final Cut Pro, but now I need to make some minor changes. He can give me all of the underlying files. Final Cut Pro is overkill for me, but I need to make sure that I can work with it in Final Cut Express before buying a Mac and the software just for that purpose.
