what's the difference between the Composite AV Cable and the Component AV Cable?

I’m not a professional, but have plenty of experience with this, so I’ll do my best to explain in laymen’s terms.
In the case of Apple's AV cables to be used with your iPod or iPhone, it's the difference in how you connect your video feed.
Component AV consists of 3 RCA-type plugs to carry the video feed to your TV/Monitor. With this connection you are able to send the lowest form of an HD video signal (720i and maybe 720p, but I’m not positive about the ‘p’). So with this product you’ll see 5 RCA-type plugs; 3 for the video and 2 for the audio.
Composite AV consists of a single RCA-type plug to carry the video feed to your TV/Monitor. This is the simplest form of video feed and will have 3 RCA-type plugs; 1 for the video and 2 for the audio.
Newer TV's and Monitors often have both options available or only component, whereas the older TV's and Monitors only have the composite option available. Be sure you check out what connections are available on your specific TV.- Answered by RP from Upland

A number of recent firmware updates have included blocks on non-OEM (Apple) cables.

No, only videos and photos. You could if you jail broke your iPod or iPhone, but doing that will void the warranty on your device.

Unfortunately not.
I have this cable and tried doing just that.
Interestingly I get sound but no video.
Whilst leaving the cable connected to my TV I closed the Sky Mobile TV app and played a video from the iPod app which appeared on-screen as expected. I guess therefore that the Sky Mobile TV app is preventing or playing video in the wrong format for it to appear through the video out port.
I guess I'm not surprised. Shame.

Composite Video Cable may not be compatible with iPhone 3G/3GS. Apple support article contradicts this product page. What gives?
Apple support article HT1454 indicates that this composite cable is not compatible with iPhone 3G/3GS. The charts in the article show that the 3G/3G phones are not compatible with the composite cable, whether or not it's being used with the Universal Dock. That information contradicts the info on this product page. What gives?

Will this cable allow me to connect the iPhone 3G to my TV and watch the new Sky Mobile application?
I have just got a free 3-month trial of the Sky Mobile application so I can watch Sky Sports, News & ESPN on the iPhone, but I want to connect it to a TV to watch - will these cables allow that or are they coded to only allow playback via official apps?

From my personal experience using trial and error it does not.
I have the new IPOD Touch late 2009 model with firmware 3.1.
I tried the genuine Apple Component and Composite cables and neither worked.
I spoke with one tech that said they should work before I purchased, but he advised going to a local Apple retailer to try it first which I did and neither worked. I spoke to another Apple Tech that said they would not work and to wait and see if Apple was maybe coming out with a new compatible cable.- Answered by WW from Waterloo

According to this support document (google "HT1454") the iPod touch (Late 2009) i.e. 3rd generation will work with this cable.

Can I have power running to my IPOD while the AV cables are plugged in?
My Ipod does not cary the charge needed to play videos without be plugged in anymore. If the AV cables plug into the bottom, how do I keep power running to the IPOD?

I have several TVs. Some have COMPONENT inputs, some have COMPOSITE inputs. Will the COMPONENT cable do the COMPOSITE function or do I need both?

No, you don't need a dock to use these cables. These cables have a direct connector for the base of your Ipod Touch and includes a USB cord to supply power for the device.

iPod touch 2nd generation, software version 3.1.2. I've heard that this cable does not function with version 3.x.x software, is this true?
I have already tried a cheaper clone, iPod says 'not supported'. Mind you it was from Hong Kong for £2.00!

It is line level since the audio comes from the dock connector rather than the headphone jack socket.
