What is the working distance, when in line of sight, compared to 1st gen remote?

I am using a 1st gen with an iphone on apple dock and I have only, say, 6ft (2 meters) of working distance. Is this correct?

Will this remote work with an iPod shuffle 3rd or 4th generation?

I think my iPod is a 3rd generation, so I can't listen to my music out loud. I would like to be able to, but I would need a remote. I have a speaker I can use with other iPods, but it may not work with this.
