What is lifetime expectancy of this device? For how long will it be warranted?
I have read many disappointing reports re its long-term reliabilty

The warranty is 3 years.
Where did you hear many disappointing reports on long-term reliability? It just came out, so how can someone have long-term reliability numbers on it yet? Or perhaps you are referring to the RAID-0 striping of the drives. All RAID-0 arrays have the same problem - if one drive goes bad on you, you lose all your data on both drives. You need to make a tradeoff here: if you want max speed, you sacrifice redundancy (and therefore volume reliability). If you want max reliability, you have half the volume size and half the max speed capability (RAID-1). You can also create a large volume using JBOD, but you don't get the speed performance from RAID-0 striping, though if one drive fails you would still be able to access the contents from the second drive.
This drive is solid, quiet and does a great job heat sinking. If anything, the reliability will be limited to the reliability of the drives themselves.

3 year warranty according to LaCie's website.

Back in the 1990s, LaCie made durable, high-quality CRT monitors and we had good luck with three of them. We had terrible luck in the 2000s with LaCie's peripheral drives, including hard drives DoA and drive failures in less than a year.
Unless this price point is disposable for you, I'd save the receipts, packaging, warranty, and contact information.
