Can I connect an external antenna to the Airport Extreme like the old cone-shaped Airport? We have so much steel in our apartment the signal is low.

No, there is no provision for connecting an external antenna. You might need a base station in each room. The base station can be positioned on a wall or ceiling, and need not be level.

The following recommendations can help an AirPort Extreme achieve maximum wireless range and optimal network coverage:

Place the AirPort Extreme in an open area where there are few obstructions, such as large pieces of furniture or walls. Try to place it away from metallic surfaces.

If you place the AirPort Extreme behind furniture, keep at least an inch of space between the AirPort Extreme and the edge of the furniture.

Avoid placing the AirPort Extreme in areas surrounded by metal surfaces on
    three or more sides.

If you place the AirPort Extreme in an entertainment center with stereo
equipment, avoid completely surrounding the AirPort Extreme with audio, video, or power cables. Place the AirPort Extreme so that the cables are to one side. Maintain as much space as possible between the AirPort Extreme and the cables.

Try to place the AirPort Extreme at least 25 feet (7.6 meters) from a microwave oven, 2.4 or 5 gigahertz (GHz) cordless phones, or other sources of interference.

  • I have signal problems too - after checking some of those "take the machine apart" sites, I learned the Airport Extreme has antennas located on three sides of the case. The port connection side of the unit does not have any antenna.

So make sure your unit has a facing that points the antennas toward the other areas of your house. Elevating the unit on a shelf away from other wires or steel boxes will help too.
