Can you attach a USB LAN adapter to the iPad 2 Dock or directly to the iPad 2?

The idea is to operate the iPad 2 at locations where no Wi-Fi is available, only wired internet is supplied such as hotel rooms etc.,.

    No, not unless a third party adapter is introduced, but this is not currently available.
