Can I use the mini vga adapter as a connector for this hdmi cable to hook up with my macbook pro?

Yes. I have a mini vga adapter connected between my macbook pro and my Samsung 40" HDTV. It connects to the VGA input on the TV and a separate but parallel audio cord connects from the headphone outlet on the macbook to the mini jack audio input on the TV. I set the macbook pro display to "mirroring" and the macbook becomes just another "channel" on the TV, selected with the "Source" button on the Samsung remote. Works like a charm!
