Can I use Time Capsule as a storage unit that I can access from anywhere, even if I'm in another city or state?

I want to be able to access Time Capsule remotely if I'm in a different city or state and have access to my files. I also want other people, that I allow, to access my Time Capsule for a similar purpose. Is it possible and is it all right to do this, or does it make the Time Capsule hardware more likely to fail over time?
