Without knowing exactly how it works, this is what I think it does. I've been wearing my Fuelband SE since January 2014, and all you do is configure your weight. Inside the fuelband are a number of accelerometers - one collecting information on movement from a forwards / backwards direction, another from a left / right direction and a 3rd from the up / down direction.
When you move, each of the 3 accelerometers record the "magnitude" of the movements - left/right, forwards/backwards and up/down. Let's talk about the magnitude of movement - the amount of movement. If you're taking a gentle stroll along the river bank, for example, then the accelerometers are not being "thrashed" around very much - and so only a minimal amount of "Nike Fuel" is recorded. But when you're going for a run or something more strenuous like sprinting, where the accelerometers are being thrust backwards and forwards quite vigorously, then the amount of fuel you're burning is greater, and so a higher number is recorded.
All of this data is constantly recorded on the Fuelband. It is not essential for the iOS device to be in close proximity to the fuelband. You can even keep Bluetooth turned off, if you don't need to use Bluetooth - and this will help preserve your battery. So when I want to check my progress, I turn on Bluetooth, open the Nike app and sync the data. It may take a few moments depending on the amount of data that needs to move across.
That's essentially it. Hopefully this was helpful.
By the way - I find it quite good. I think the real benefit comes from setting yourself a daily goal that is slightly higher than your comfort level, and then sticking to it. Mine is 4,000 and I'm a 46 year old male. If you get home and there's still 700 fuel to go before you reach your goal, then you should probably go for a half hour walk. That's the real benefit!
