It will work with your macbook, but it will be at USB 2.0 speeds Should not be a problem though.
If you're using iPhoto for your photos, you may want to empty the trash folder in the iPhoto program. When you delete a photo, they go in the programs trash, and they still take up memory on your hard drive. The trash folder is on the left side where all of your other folders are. Just control click on the trash can and your photos will be thrown away.
Also make sure you empty the finder's trash too.
