Compatible with 3rd generation iPad? Secured connection? Easy removal from cigarette lighter socket?

Is this car adapter suitable for the latest ipad? I just purchased the new iPad with WiFi + 4G (32 GB) but forgot about needing a car charger. While traveling I purchased a 12 volt power adapter made by a competitor that said it was compatible with iPad WiFi + 3G models. After having it plugged in for 10 minutes, the adapter got so hot that I could barely touch it! Needless to say I am afraid to use it again.
