Will a screen protector work with the ipad 3 smart case?

I want a screen protector to prevent scratches on my Ipad 3; However the smart case doesn't actually cover the screen. If I put a screen protector on and then the case, will it still work to put the ipad to sleep and wake up?

    I put a Zagg screen shield on my iPad 3rd gen and the smart cover works just fine. However, it does diminish the quality of the screen. It does have anti-glare and it thicker than the one I used on my original iPad. I use a stylus often and want to prevent scratches.
