Applecare does not cover accidental damage- Applecare + does...
as of now it's $99 to cover an ipad for 2 years from date of purchase, and you have access to up to 2 incidents of damage in that time.
A replacement will cost you $49 if you do have APP+.
Also, its best to purchase APP+ at time of purchase- must be purchased within 30 days of purchase of iPad (or iPhone, etc.) and must be brought into apple retail store for inspection- if already damaged they will not likely sell coverage.
You can get exceptions to the retail store purchasing of APP+ if you live very far from the retail store or it's otherwise very hard for you to bring it in. In that case, call I-800-APL-CARE
