Will Apple TV work well in a dorm room?
I am curious as to if it would work well since some of the operation is over wireless (right?) and I am pretty sure dorm wi-fi is public.

The Apple TV is not going to work reliably over wireless in a dormitory environment where dozens of people are sharing a single wireless router. However, since your computer and the Apple TV will be in your dorm room, you can wire them together with an inexpensive 100 Mbps switch and it will certainly work much better over the wired connection. MacBooks can connect to both a wired and wireless network simultaneously; connect to the wireless router first, and then use System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing to share your wireless connection over the Ethernet interface.
Note that you may experience poor performance when downloading from the Internet (e.g. iTunes Store, YouTube, etc.). There's just nothing you can do about the fact that many, many people are sharing a relatively small amount of Internet bandwith. But you can localize your computer-to-Apple TV traffic over a fast 100 Mbps wired network and get excellent local performance.
