Features

Apple Recommends For

Enhance the sound from your Mac or MacBook by connecting it to Zeppelin Mini, or stream music using AirPort Express.

Zeppelin Mini is an integrated speaker system from Bowers & Wilkins, makers of the speakers used to monitor the recording of much of the music on your iPod. B&W developed its iPod speakers with the same exacting standards as the speakers that are used in Abbey Road Studios and Skywalker Ranch.

Design

To compliment the iPod user interface, the docking port allows you to grasp your iPod or iPhone as if it were in your hand. It also cleverly accommodates iPod or iPhone models of differing depth through a spring-loaded docking arm that flexes to adjust automatically. The dock also rotates through 90 degrees.

Heritage

At Bowers & Wilkins, the quest to develop the perfect speaker has lasted more than 40 years. The designers are always mindful of the goal to create a speaker that portrays a musical performance exactly as it was recorded, with zero coloration.

Technology

Mini uses two newly developed, full-range, 7.62 cm glass fiber drivers whose uniquely slotted cone and very long-throw “motor” deliver unprecedented range and dynamics for so compact a transducer. B&W's advanced DSP technology maximizes the drivers' abilities to produce jaw-dropping loudness and fullness. And two leading-edge Class D (“digital”) amplifiers ensure plenty of power from ultra-compact, nearly cold-running circuitry.

Multi-purpose USB connection

The USB connection in the back of the unit allows for audio streaming from iPod via docking arm or from a Mac or PC via mini USB connection located on back of the unit. It also allows iPod/Mac/PC sync with iTunes (when Zeppelin Mini is in stand by mode). You can even use it for firmware upgrades with new iPhone/iPod releases.

Simple operation

Plug in Zeppelin Mini, place your iPod or iPhone on the docking port and hit the play button. The connections at the back let you play other sources through the unit. Easily change tracks, volume and mode with the pebble-like remote.

Mini name but impeccably big sound and manners
    • Written by SB from Edinburgh

Having scoped this system out online prior to launch, I couldn't wait to see it in the Apple Store and audition it as best as you can in that environment. At first I was a little disappointed listening to the in store iPod Touch, with there being a lack of warmth and clarity.

Docking my own iPhone and loading up a high quality MP3 encode, the sound improved considerably and after ten minutes of listening, we were convinced enough to purchase.

Having listened for a couple of hours with a range of tunes, I am absolutely delighted with the Mini. It is not as big or full a sound as the Zeppelin, but it is a big and full sound. They are different systems though, (the Mini is half the size) and to fill a studio flat or bedroom with quality rounded sound, these are the bomb.

Bought to replace a Bose Soundock which died after two and a half years of constant use, these outperform it. And I do not buy in to the wholesale criticism the Soundock has attracted of late, I always liked it as a system. The B&W sound is more natural, and cleaner in my opinion.

Two factors are crucial for me though - eq should be set to flat on the iPod for best results, and at least 192 kbps encodes are required for a decent sound. But I think that is a compliment to the B&W system - it is so good it shows up deficiencies in sound - remarkable for a system this size.

All in all, great value for money (even though it is not cheap) - fabulous styling and build quality, and most importantly, fabulous sound.

Awesome sound from a small dock!
    • Written by RJ from Leicester

The sound from this thing is truly awesome!! The sound is so rich and meaty with really good bass, it is 10 times better than my Technics stereo system (which is a few years old now). The sound just fills the room.
One thing I would say is to test the mini and the original Zeppelin side by side as this was one thing I didn't do as I was buying for the price difference!
I would say that this is much better quality than the Bose sounddock (the original one) which a friend has. It is really well built and has a nice weighty feel to it just like its bigger brother. I have a 2nd gen touch and haven't been able to turn the sound up anywhere near the maximum - it just goes SO loud without distortion! The only thing is that the remote is a bit rubbish - you have to press the buttons too hard and you have to make sure its the right way around or you're pressing the wrong buttons!

This speaker system is pure quality. The sound is crystal clear and totally fills a room. I was tossing up between a Bose or the Zep or mini Zep and have no regrets at all. Go to the Apple shop and ask for a demo, you won't be disappointed. More

    OK...
    • Written by CR from Kirdford

I got this for Christmas, and to be honest, it's ok. Sounds great at a low level, but when you get to a higher level, the bass becomes bad and can't be "felt". I think that the Bose is better, as my dad has the original and we decided that it was better in sound and bass, even at its highest level. I will be upgrading this to the Bose sound dock 10 or beats by dre.

This review is based on the fact tha t I listen to a lot up bassy stuff including dubsetp.

If you want something for listening to at a low to mid level, then this is perfect for you.

The latest firmware (v2.4.36) fixes issues recognising devices and removes the annoying flashing LED.

The sound is *outstanding* and the usability is what you'd expect from anything bought at the Apple Store. More

Mini does work with iPod Touch 4G
    • Written by PC from Bury
    • 15-May-2011

Like many people commenting I bought the Zep Mini, loved it, but it didn't work with the iPod Touch 4G. I contacted B&W, who simply offered to replace it. However, when I returned it to point of purchase we discovered that the only problem is that because it is so thin, it fails to make contact fully with the dock, therefore not registering the iPod. If you simply push it down, it will work. B&W have a cradle that allows it to fit flush and you will have no problem once you get this. B&W will post it to you if you request it. So simple!! More

I bought the mini-zeppelin for my father at an Apple store. It would not play with his 4th gen Ipod Touch. I took it to the Apple Store Genius Bar. The tech ran an update from the BW website for the mini-zeppelin. That seems to have solved the problem. I am not sure how the Apple store continues to sell these without the update. I imagine there will be many other customers who will be affected by this problem. More

I had the original SoundDock which got stolen so I replaced it years ago with the discontinued Apple HiFi which was excellent for sound quality but doesn't charge iPhone 3G onwards so bought the Zeppelin Mini.

Sound from the Zeppelin is shockingly good in my opinion for a unit this size. Bass is surprisingly clear and doesn't seem to distort as much as you approach full volume unlike the Bose. Treble and mid-range seem to be on a par with the Bose.

    • 25-Jun-2011
    Answer

This is not a portable speaker system and unlike some of the Bose does not have an internal battery to allow you to take it into the garden, etc.

One of the other answers assumes you are talking about the small CR2032 battery in the remote control unit which I've not replaced in over a year yet.
