Far too limited, far too US-centric

    Written by PD from JOHNSTONE

On the plus side it's cheap and it has an iPhone iPod Touch app (at extra cost) which synchronises and allows some level of functionality on the road.

But you're forced to use its templates, many of which are rather childlike. There's no opportunity to design your own forms or to have any serious control over font, styles and colours – as there was in Claris Works / Apple Works, a long time ago.

Integration with Address Book leaves much to be desired. It's resolutely US-centric meaning UK address formats or other countries' address formats have to be recorded on an entry by entry basis. And in table form they still show up under inappropriate US headings.

I also found transfers from Excel or even Numbers to be less than elegant.

Cheap as it is I still don't know why basic database functionality wasn't included in an OS that includes iCal and Address Book.

And cheap as it is I won't be spending any more money on it until Filemaker's Bento team discovers there's more to the world than the United States.

Yes, an Appleworks 6 database will import in Bento 3. I have only two days experience with Bento and it worked for me on Day 1.

While in Appleworks, go to File > Save As.
In the File Format pull-down menu, select ASCII Text. Name your file, and make sure you include a lower case .tsv extension on your file name.

Now open Bento. Choose File > Import > File and select that file you just created with the lower-case .tsv extension. Once it's imported, take some time to review whether your Bento fields are to include text, dates, numbers, etc.

Really, it was quite slick, and my Appleworks database (which I loved) is now ready for the 21st century.
