      Loud hum

      Written by KM from Glasgow

      12-Dec-2007

Mine emitted a loud hum when active and not powered down (which is supposed to happen automatically but doesn't actually happen very often). The hum was so loud and annoying that I returned it. Iomega tech support said it sounded like a loose fan, but the Apple store people said they couldn't hear anything unusual (not surprising given how much background noise there is in the stores). So, this problem may have been a one off, but you will want to be on the outlook for this issue. Also, be aware that the USB hub ports are not active unless the device itself is on. Otherwise, a very good deal. More

For around £80 you get 360gb 7200-rpm. Never had any writing or reading problems and its really fast! Great for someone on a small budget More

Works fine, hums a bit but good overall.

Well it certainly works fine. Unpacked it and connected it to my Airport Extreme and it appeared right away in my Network. Very easy to set up and use.

It's the same size as the Airport Extreme and stacks on it okay, but it isn't particularly aesthetic because it is aluminium and the Airport Extreme is white. Maybe Apple are going to redo the Airport Extreme in aluminium sometime. It probably would look good stacked with a Mac Mini. It also comes with black cables which don't match the white cables Apple uses. Then again, Apple is in a league of its own when it comes to aesthetics and design. Overall it certainly is better in terms of aesthetics than most of the other ugly external hard drives on the market.

It does have a low hum and it is louder than an intel iMac. It doesn't seem to power down very often either.

I'm currently using it with Backup and it seems to run fine. If I connected it directly to the iMac and not to the Airport Extreme, I could use Time Machine, but Time Machine doesn't currently work with Airport Extreme.

All in all, it's fairly good but you can tell it isn't an Apple product.

      Nicely Designed kit

      Written by DK from Glasgow

I bought this HD to complement my new Unibody MacBook, and it certainly fits the aluminium Apple look. I was surprised that it came with a rather big, old school power brick, but this has a long lead, and so can be tucked away under the desk.
The fan is not too noisy, and only runs whilst the Time Machine backups are in progress. At "idle" time, it sleeps, and is silent. This happens automatically, after the backup.
A high capacity drive, well engineered and aesthetically pleasing, for a bargain price. recommended

      Great buy.

Brought this because i couldn't be bothered to search for hours for a cheaper one. but as soon as i stacked it with my nice shiny new mac mini (i wanted it because it's cool, pretty and not so big and clumsy as the average desktop computer) and switched it on it appeared and wanted to play, had it for a few months now and the only problem i've had with it is that the 'belkin n52te Nostromo speedpad' doesn't want to work plugged into it. so it has to be plugged into the usb on the computer, but other than that it is quiet and doesn't want to die. Perfect MacBook backup

      Written by SP from Manchester

      15-Apr-2008

For the cost of a night out, you can sleep soundly knowing your MacBook to be backed up on this little boy. After a bit of tinkering I've got Time Machine using half the drive (partitioned with Disk Utility) over Airport Extreme, with an exact bootable copy (using Carbon Copy Cloner) of the MacBook's HD on the other half; just in case.
Gets a disconcertingly warm when stacked with Airport, but works fine.
As for noise; didn't seem especially loud to me, plus it's not in the same room as me, so who cares!
