Your Home City

This revolutionary new feature is unlike anything you've experienced before in a real-time strategy game.

Much like a persistent character in a role-playing game, your Home City is a support system that regularly sends you supplies or military reinforcements. As you get better, your Home City becomes stronger, allowing you to unlock new types of soldiers or buildings, broaden your tech tree, and customize the appearance of your city. You can even visit your Home City to watch its citizens, get an opinion on how you’re doing, or plot your next move.

Combat

Age of Empires III gives players an amazing amount of control over their side of the battlefield.

You’re in control of large and diverse armies of infantry, cavalry, artillery, Native American warriors, mercenaries, and ships. You can assign different formations to your army, like Volley, Charge, or Bombard, or have the game automatically choose the most appropriate formation for you.

The real-time physics cause infantry struck by cannon balls to get thrown like rag dolls, perhaps even over a cliff into the water. Cannon balls bounce and ricochet. Shingles, shutters, and whole towers may fly off a building and interact with the terrain. And, with hundreds of unique combat animations, you’ll never see the same battle twice.

Graphics

Age of Empires III isn’t just one of the best-looking real-time strategy games ever, it’s one of the best-looking games of any kind ever.

Tone mapping gives scenes a photorealistic look by balancing colors in a scene. Units and buildings cast realistic shadows based on the sun’s position. Water glistens like water, foams near the shore, and reflections change with the viewing angle, the angle of sunlight, and the motion of the water. Steep cliffs jut from the terrain like paintings from the American Southwest.

Single-player, Multiplayer, and Campaign

There are many ways to play Age of Empires III. Play against the computer on random maps. Play multiplayer against friends online, or play the Campaign in which you take the role of Morgan Black and his descendants as they struggle against the hostile wilderness, help the Aztecs resist the Spanish conquistadors, pit the French against the British and help Simon Bolivar lead revolutions in South America.

    Great game, loved it, but YOU CAN USE IT WITH A MIGHTY MOUSE!!! To get the right click, just head to system preferences, under Hardware click on Keyboard and Mouse, then make sure that the mouse tab is selected. To the right of the mouse there will be a drop-down box with a line pointing to the right side of the mouse. Click on the arrow and select 'secondary mouse button'. Now, load AoE and you can right click to your hearts content! …More

    All in all, with the exception of a few things, there is no real difference between the Mac and PC version - they play the same (although the two version cant play together, as far as I know).

    What is different is the amount of detail that goes into exploding buildings - in the PC version, its almost cartoon-like, with huge chunks of masonry flying around, whereas the Mac version is much more restrained (and possibly more sensible) - you only get small bits moving slightly around. However, you do get a nice plume of smoke when a building is destroyed.

    When running on a wireless network, my understrength one would pause for a very long time or drop out completely. , so you need to make sure that, if your using a wireless network, its in tip-top form.

    One other area of difference is how much graphical detail you can select before it becomes unplayable - on my 2.1Ghz Intel iMac, you can set the shader options up to High only - anything greater and it becomes unplayable.

    And, unlike the PC version, there are no product codes to enter - although you do need the CD in, to play the game.

    There are slight graphical differences with the land (possibly Z fighting with the 3D objects) - but it does sort of enhance things...

    As usual, the price quoted in the Apple store is somewhat inflated - you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

    This is a brilliant game with cool graphics. Build your empire while you advance through different ages and make allies with indian tribes and other teams. There is multiplayer mode in which you can interact with your friends. There are a lot of other elements as well.
    This is the best of the trilogy and I hope they make a 4th game.     …More

    Having never played any of the Age of Empires games I was a little dubious about taking the plunge. I did, and I truly do not regret it one bit! There are a lot of options and the scenarios are pretty good. It really is a toughy when cranking it up to a harder level.
    I am about to buy the Warchief expansion pack. Would recommend the Gold pack as it is included in that. I wish I could zoom in more or had more options to tinker and muck around with but hey, it is pretty entertaining and a lot of random maps to keep it going, working to get more cards is awesome too.     …More
