It looks similar to the previously released Super Drive. However Apple claims that this updated model supports the new Retina Display MacBook, as well as providing support for other macs that do not come equipped with a built-in drive. It is well constructed and from the moment you open the box, you know you are in for a high quality item.

The drives footprint is no larger than a standard CD case; I have taken mine in my bag to work and had no problems with added bulk or weight. It connects to the mac via USB and there is no additional software to install. It has not failed to recognise any DVD or CD that I have inserted. With a slot loading mechanism, there are no buttons on the drive and no hatches to lift. Simply insert the disc by sliding it in the slot and remove via the on screen eject button. I feel obliged to add that the cable from the Super Drive is fairly short (~12 inches). This may be a pro or con, depending on your needs, but the cable can be extended using a usb extension.

Conclusively, the Super Drive is a premium product that works well out of the box, and presents with no issues. What you are getting is a device that compliments the aesthetics of your mac and functions efficiently. 5/5

One caveat however, is that the usb lead used to connect the drive is ridiculously short which sometimes makes it inconvenient to use. You would think for the price charged Apple would supply an extension to the lead in case it was needed.

It's well documented that the SuperDrive won't work if connected to a hub! One hub I tested even stated that, in it's manual. And It's well documented that the SuperDrive won't work if connected to a hub! One hub I tested even stated that, in it's manual. And yet I plugged it into my 2nd monitor (27" LED) which is plugged into my iMac (so acting as a hub) - works!

Plugged into Belkin 4 port USB3 connected to iMac - nothing.

Plugged the drive into 27" LED; which is plugged into Belkin hub; which is plugged into iMac - Works brilliantly!!! Go figure! But in this config. the SuperDrive is getting power from the LED's USB port, not Belkin's USB port! I.e. The Apple LED is supplying power, the Belkin is suppling signal (from the iMac).

  • Nice external drive but upside down cable issue

I don't have an issue with the length of the USB cable but I do have an issue with its orientation. It is upside down. I have to twist the cable in order to slot it into the mac book pro. Now maybe if you have an iMac then it sits nicely under the computer and the cable loops over the superdrive (like a scorpions tail) into the back of the machine and so is the correct way up, but with the macbook pro you have to twist the cable uncomfortably to get it in. Is it meant to be this way? It seems ridiculous to take issue with such a thing but it just doesn't feel right.
