Product Information

  • The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector so if someone trips over it, the lead disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook Pro stays put safely. It also helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector lights up; an amber light lets you know that your notebook is charging, while a green light tells you that you have full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives you an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.

It is dangerous and a fire hazard. Today the cable coming out of the main unit melted exposing the internal wires. In the process it melted a hole in the carpet it was sitting on. Overheating seems to be a recurrent problem with this design. Tomorrow I will see what the Mac Store has to say about this. I assume that they will replace the product for free.

I am not a heavy user but the charger had now 'frayed' at the mag 2 connector showing the metal grading around the cable itself. It is a poorly designed and poorly constructed piece of equipment which lets down the whole product. I just wonder what Apple were thinking of.......

  • Not an improvement: can no longer my laptop in lap

It saved my laptop from being knocked off a table or desk countless times. I was excited to get the new, improved version of this charger. Unfortunately, the upgrade seems to be in most ways worse. It's much more easily knocked out (due in part to an apparently weaker magnet, and to the extra leverage provided by it's more protrusive shape), to the point of being extremely inconvenient. Using the laptop on soft surfaces, frequently causes the charger to be angled in such a way that it will connect intermittently or disconnect altogether. This can't be good for the charger, never mind how frustrating it is to plug your laptop in in the knick of time before it dies just to knock the cord out and have it shut down anyways. Most frustrating of all, I have a very hard time finding a position for the laptop in my lap that doesn't knock the charger out. There's irony in there somewhere. Other than that, it gets significantly hotter than the previous version, and the material of the cord feels "cheaper" (although this might just be colored by my other experiences with the product.) Hopefully they'll release an l-shaped charger compatible with this generation of macbook, but knowing Apple, that seems unlikely.

A LOT. You would think the designers would improve upon last generation's design, but it's only gotten dumber.

The people who are complaining must use their equipment in very strange (inappropriate) conditions. Melting power bricks and frayed wires sound like a user-related issues. If you are careful when you wind your cable up and keep the power adapter in a sensible location, it will last you a long time. That said, as an owner of a Summer 2012 Retina MacBook Pro, I've noticed a little bit of small cracking in the rubber cable shielding near the input point on the brick. This is the point that gets the most stress, as it is where the cable is pulled to its greatest angle when winding it up for storage. It would be nice to see Apple considering the potential for this kind of wear; a stronger, more flexible support point would be useful.
