    Cheers for NOTHING Lion...

    • Written by from Iver

I'm having to register my disgust with Lion here, rather than in the App Store where I downloaded it from, as the App Store isn't letting me. That would be strange were I not now used to my 2010 model top-spec MacBook Pro under-performing since installing Lion. It has honestly RUINED my Mac experience. My MacBook Pro now takes as long as my PC to boot and is actually SLOWER loading webpages. Safari is not just slow but also crashes frequently now - it NEVER used to do this. In exchange for some genuinely pointless 'improvements' Lion has turned my £1000+ MacBook Pro into a slower, more frustrating computer than my £400 Acer. DO NOT INSTALL THIS TERRIBLE 'UPGRADE'! More

    A brilliant OS

    • Written by from Godalming

I downloaded this the day it came out and have had ONE problem. Wifi, which disconnected at will, which was then fixed by a software update.

I have Lion installed on my iMac (late 2009) and MacBook (unibody, late 2008) and it works brilliantly, even with Office 2008 (as disputed by a previous reviewer who said it wouldn't install). Mail doesn't chew resources, at least I haven't noticed - it is certainly better than Outlook; I changed straight to Mail over Outlook as the exchange functionality had been improved from Snow Lep.

The scrolling I have fallen in love with, but some people may have a few problems when they start, you get used to it. Mission control is brilliant.

Not sure I can actually summarise everything I love about Lion in 300 words ;) It's great. If you're really unsure about Lion, try and go by an Apple store and have a play. Alternatively, create a partition and install Lion to that and see how you get on.

Lion a disaster. Too many older programs do not work with this OS

    • Written by from Huntingdon

I was horrified to find out that the majority of my existing software was useless when upgrading to OSX Lion. My Adobe CS1 collection does not function nor does Microsoft office 2008. I would have to spend many thousands of GB pounds to be able to use this OS. I have been a MAc lover since 1984 but this has been a huge shock. It means that I will never buy another Mac, having purchased 15 units since 1984.
This may be a wonderful OS but not for pensioners or anybody on a low income!

    Worst Upgrade Ever

    • Written by from London

I'm feeling much more as a Windows user after this awful upgrade. Full of bugs and stupid "new" tools. I lost many programs, as them cannot run in the Lion. Very slow, even in my i7 3.0 12GB. They should call it "downgrade" Very disappointing. More

    Ease of Lion Installation

    • Written by from NEWARK

I have had no trouble upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion - which installed in roughly 28 mins. I not unaware of a certain number of critical comments, but I have found that the secret of success is PREPARATION!!
I would strongly recommend the book 'Take control of Upgrading to Lion' by Joe Kissell, obtainable from oreilly.com in all formats. I followed his advice to the letter which took a little time but resulted in a quick trouble-free installation.
It's not expensive - try it and see!!

The licensing on Lion is like that for other App store software: you can install and use it on any computer you personally control. Basically, if you have an account on the computer for which you have an AppleID, you can install Lion on the computer. More

If your Mac came with Tiger there is a better than even chance that it doesn't even support Lion. Only Macs released in early 2007 (and the very first Mac Pro from 2006) are old enough to have come with Tiger, and "new enough" to support Lion.

Post another question identifying your exact Mac (preferably the model number if you can find it on the label) and someone will tell you if it will be supported.

And the answer, by the way is, no, you can't do a straight upgrade unless you already have Snow Leopard. Everyone else will need to either do each upgrade (Leopard, Snow, then Lion) OR backup, erase, do a clean install and then restore your data. Time Machine + Migration Assistant is generally what you use in that situation.

Legally, yes, according to the OS X Lion Software License Agreement (part below) you need to have Snow Leopard license to purchase Lion, this is why it is cheaper. However what you download from the App Store and what is available on the thumb drive are considered "full versions". For example, I downloaded Lion from the App Store and burnt it onto a thumb drive myself. Then I did a "clean install" (or format and install) on my MacBook.

The OS X Lion Software License Agreement allows you to install and use the software for your personal, non-commercial use on all the Macs you own or control that are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Snow Leopard Server (a Mac Computer).
