Overview

Wireless backup for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Time Machine icon

NEW
Automatic backup with Time Machine.

Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location. New technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard up to 75 per cent faster than before.2

Storage icon

Server-grade storage.

The massive 1TB or 2TB server-grade hard drive2 gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Mac computers.

Networking icon

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.4

Dual Band icon

NEW
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 per cent better range than with the previous-generation Time Capsule.5

Guest Networking icon

Guest networking.

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.

Drive Sharing icon

Wireless drive sharing.

Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.6

Printer icon

Print without wires.

Print documents, photos and more from any room in your home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB. (See system requirements.)

Security icon

Strong security and access controls.

Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.

AppleTV, iPhone, iPod touch icon

Works with iPhone, Apple TV and more.

Time Capsule works with Mac computers, PCs, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

  2. (2) Testing conducted by Apple in October 2009 comparing preproduction Time Capsule (Late 2009) with shipping Time Capsule (Early 2009) units. Testing was conducted on preproduction 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based iMac (Late 2009) systems. Performance will vary based on system configuration, network, file sizes, data sets, wireless interference and other factors. Performance tests are conducted using specific systems and reflect the approximate performance of Time Capsule.

Great product, for 18 months only

    Written by JK from Southwater

    26-Oct-2009

Time Capsule is sleekly designed and does what it says elegantly. With a strong, fast WiFi signal and generous hard drive storage it makes Time Machine backups painless and a must-have facility. External access through a MobileMe account is also very useful.

However, reliability is not first class. At 18 months a lot of these units, like my own, are dying due to the phenomenal amount of heat they generate.

If you do buy one, keep it cool.

    Good but short life?

    Written by BQ from Knaresborough

    27-Oct-2009

In my experience, Apple kit is usually high quality and long lasting but my Time Capsule has just died after only 19 months. This is unacceptable for what is a relatively expensive item. I have to wonder whether a new one would be any better. More

    Dear after 18 months

    Written by JD from TELFORD

    01-Nov-2009

I really, really liked my Time Capsule - simplicity of design and function and to quote an Apple slogan - it just works... until today, 18 months after purchase. The unit is completely dead - I suspect, like many have reported, the internal power supply is at fault. I'm asking the question, whats the point of having a server grade hard drive if the rest of the unit is not up to the job.

All my other Apple products seem to last the course but the Time Capsule is more a Time Bomb!

    Very disapionted

    Written by SM from Græsted

The device is surprisingly easy to configure, but I was very disappointed when I found out that it could not run iTunes server. It is in my opinion a serious shortcoming, and it could have made this device the ultimate gadget.

Now it is only a well functioning boring WiFi backup device -
    and nothing else...!!!

    Good until it dies

    Written by RG from Wayland

Good product, but like many other posters here, my Time Capsule has died an untimely death, exactly one day short of 19 months of use. I hope I will be able to at least recover the data from it. More

    Breaks after a year

Written by SB from Melton Mowbray

You heard it. The time capsule just packs up after about a year and you loose all your backed files. I am not surprised my review is the same as so many. Just buy DVD's and store important stuff on there ! no need to waste your money ! More
