    limited potential

    • Written by from LONDON

having just bought both a new MacBookPro and MacPro i was looking for a good monitor, but this replacement for the very olde 30" Cinema Display (which was overdue for a replacement 3 years ago) seems to be made for the non-pro user who just wants to be dazzled by the image rather than seeing what is really there.

it also seems to be limited, without spending a fortune on extra cables/adapters for this use and that use, to the newest macs only, will only reach a MacPro that is on the desk next to the screen (rather than the usual habit of keeping the desktop UNDER the desk) due to the short length of the main cable, will not directly connect to an Apple TV, etc etc

worse still is the fact that i was advised to NOT buy an Apple monitor by an Apple One-To-One advisor sinc in addition to the poor screen for pro use, it has been designed more to look good, rather than to keep the screen at optimal temperature (the screen housing should have a lot of air holes in order to keep the screen cool, the wrap-around design, although admittedly gorgeous, is not what the components require for a long life at the correct colour

so, the conclusion is that Apple have moved to the consumer market, left the pro out of it, and have forgotten that the initial crusade to build the best has been sideswiped by a desire to sell the prettiest

a great shame, and a missed opportunity to catch up and produce a stunning pro screen

    Awful

    • Written by from Glapthorn

The glossy screen is only good for watching movies and viewing pictures in bright colourful detail. It is no good for professional work where you need the screen to display brightness and saturation as close to the printed item as possible. We have also had to rearrange the desks so that no one is sitting with a window behind them due to the glare.

As for the cable length! How close do you think we're going to put our G5 to the monitor!!? I would defintely opt for a bigger, cheaper alternative with a matte display.

Great display, none of the problems others have speculated on

    • Written by from Forest Row

It's not entirely clear, but PA from London seems to have written his review based on his impressions of the monitor without actually having bought one.

I bought one recently to sit alongside the 27" iMac I use, professionally, every day for programming and have to say it is great. Yes, it would be nicer if it was a little less glossy (hence only 4 stars) but the display is wonderful. Very precise and clear, the colours are bright and punchy and it's just as good for watching videos as for working on.

No problems with heat - the back is cool to the touch even after hours of use. This is LED backlit, after all, which generates far less heat than tungsten backlighting.

The only significant issue with it for me is that it sits a lot lower than the screen on the iMac. However, I have discovered that using a first-generation AppleTV lifts it to be almost exactly the same height :-)

    Have 2 and loving them!

    • Written by from WELLINGBOROUGH

I deliberated over these and Dell 2711 which I almost bought, but was put off by the talk of the grainy anti-glare coating. The ACD LED were replacements for a pair of 23" ACD ive been using almost every day for 5 years, which were excellent but starting to look dimmer than Id like!

The clarity, brightness and overall 'pop' of these screens is superb, as well as the substantial screen real estate compared to my previous 1920x1080 ACD. For me the glossiness is a non issue since I work in a room with no rear illumination or items that would reflect - when these are on, all I can see is what's on screen. However, with less optimal lighting conditions, I assume you would struggle a little - seems daft that Apple dont offer both gloss and matte versions. I am however enjoying the lack of grain/sparkle you get with coated glass.

Only reason i'm giving 4 stars is overall expense - I think they could be a tad cheaper! :]

I also installed a Radeon HD5770 in my early 2008 Mac pro to run them via Mini Display Port, and can also confirm that despite what it says on the kit for them, they do work with Macs prior to 2010!

    Stunning

The build and picture quality are out of this world. Issues people are having with the length of the cable have been remedied by the looks of things. The cable is now more than long enough to reach a tower sitting on the floor. The only feature this monitor is lacking is an IR receiver for the Apple remotes. Then it would be the perfect accompaniment for the Mac Pro. More

very useful, makes work much more efficent

    • Written by from london

I bought one of these with the late 2011 MBP. i had some trouble first using lion, but the display never did let me down, even when running bootcamp. however i noticed that i couldnt ultimately use the display as a docking station for my MBP because whenever the MBP was restarted with the display pluged in, in order to remove the MBP you would have to either put the mac book back to sleep of power off. i choose to power off because the transition between screens leaves all the programs that you have running, in the same size of the thunderbolt display, meaning you have to resize all the open apps.

appart from this, the sound quality is truly amazing, with very good base, no need to buy any external speakers as they are near to bose quality!

the HD camera is also very useful, when using webcam related software.

overall, very good and usefull monitor
    i hope this helps!.

No. I've spent the past two days looking for a solution. I expected my ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card to drive video to my new Thunderbolt Display though the mini Display Port connector. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Very frustrated. More

You most definitely can. You can set any external monitor to be the primary and only monitor for your MacBook Pro. Once it is connected via Mini DisplayPort and properly configured, you must close the lid and do one of three things:

    1. Click a paired bluetooth mouse such as the Magic Mouse to wake it.
    2. Stroke a key on a paired bluetooth keyboard to wake it.
    3. Open and close the lid in one motion.

I'm always traveling, using bigger external monitors as my only display. I'll just hook it up, open and close the lid, and the screen will properly activate.

    Hope that helps, friend.

  • This looks great! Does this work with PCs?

This does work fine with a PC. You must either use a converter adaptor (over $100) or use one of the few PC cards with a mini displayport like the ATI 5970. Also, depending on your hardware some people have trouble getting boot camp to install into windows properly on a PC. You must use boot camp to control the brightness on this monitor, or hook it to a mac and set the brightness first. The monitor will remember whatever the last brightness setting was used if you use the mac option. Also, be aware the brightness, sound, and isight camera all utilize the usb port. I should also mention, the isight camera and sound work fine on my pc. More
