Product Information

  • Overview

Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm and its companion app on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch make safety easy - and decidedly less annoying. Nest Protect speaks up to tell you what the problem is and where it is. It will even message your iPhone when the alarm goes off or the batteries run low. And you can check on things at any time with the Nest app.

Nest Protect can also see the carbon monoxide you can't. Or if there's only a little smoke from just burning the toast, it gives you a friendly heads-up. It also gives you peace of mind by testing itself constantly and showing you everything's working with a quick green glow when you turn off the lights.

Each night, Protect glow I recently bought two Nest Protect devices for my home to replace a pair of old-style smoke detectors.

Each night, Protect glows a reassuring green to let us know everyhting is functioning before we go to bed. No more low battery warning bleeps!

Each morning, Nest Protect lights my way to the bathroon as I try creep around the house in darkness.

When I burn toast, Nest Protect gives me a spoken heads-up rather than bursting into an angry bleeping like my old smoke detector.

If I'm away on business trips, I can check online that all is fine at home.

In summary, Nest Protect is not a smoke detector...it is a little bit of reassurance in an uncertain world.

Once setup, I decided to "test" the alarm, with real smoke test. And was not impressed at all. It takes alot longer then normal Once setup, I decided to "test" the alarm, with real smoke test. And was not impressed at all. It takes alot longer then normal alarms to alert that there is smoke, but also has the issue were it takes 'breaks' when the alarm is being sounded.
The test went - 10 to 15 seconds after smoke started it decided to alert with "Heads up" then it started the emergency alarm. Then after alarming for a few moments it fell silent for around 5 seconds, before starting back up again.
I ran this test a few times and the results were the same.

Check Apple Store US for reviews as well as it appears to have more issues then a Smoke alarm should. After all this product should safe life if a fire does break out. Apple allowed me to setup a return for a refund. Hopefully Nest Labs (Google) can resolve these issues in future versions of the Nest Protect.

I'm very impressed with my nest protects and my nest thermostat at home. I love stats and the Internet of things. So my only two w I'm very impressed with my nest protects and my nest thermostat at home. I love stats and the Internet of things. So my only two wishes are that the nest systems could provide more data, readily available to show what they are sensing around my home and I wish the integration with my other internet connected devices was a little more accessible. For example I love the fact my LIFX lightbulbs are connected to my nest system and that they will warn me of an issue by flashing red in the case of an emergency. However, I want to be able to see them trigger when I run tests on my nest system to give me the peace of mind that they all do what they are supposed when I need them most!

  • No MAC address information; doesn't work with two WiFi addresses

I bought two of these units, one for upstairs and one for down. Nowhere on the box, packaging, documentation or the unit is the M I bought two of these units, one for upstairs and one for down. Nowhere on the box, packaging, documentation or the unit is the MAC address displayed - our system uses MAC address filtering so this is essential! Had to use iStumbler to find it out.

When I set up the upstairs unit it would not connect because upstairs uses a different but connected WiFi network! A bit rubbish really.

If you don't use MAC addresses and have just the one WiFi network then I suppose it will be fine.
