    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

I used to have to fiddle about with my Macbook Air, plugging and unplugging monitor, headphones, backup drive and DVD drive. It meant I probably took my Air with me less often. But now I leave all that stuff plugged into my Thunderbolt Dock, and connect it all to my Air with one little cable.

One thing to remember though, is you must be running 10.9.2 for it to work properly. It comes with a utility that enables it to do things like charge an iPad, and recognise the Superdrive, and that requires 10.9.2. Other than that though, it works like a dream.

I think it looks pretty cool too. It certainly cleans up my desktop, with wires now all neat and tidy.

Easy to set up. Elgato downlodable utility enables high-power charging for iPads.

Performance very encouraging, transfer speeds for my 8TB external storage much improved over USB2. When comparing cost of the dock plus USB3 drives versus Thunderbolt hard drives, easy to justify. Plus you get other interfaces - HDMI, Ethernet, and audio in/out.

    Recommended.

I bought this for my MacBook Pro. Every time I sat down at my desk I was plugging in a network cable via a dongle, an HDMI cable, a USB scanner and a set of speakers. Two cables on one side, two on the other. OK, not the end of the world but a bit tedious. Now I plug just one in cable and it's done - it's wonderful :-) The monitor, network, speakers and USB scanner are permanently plugged into the dock. You don't need to load any drivers, just plug it in and it works. But if you do load the optional Dock Utility it'll charge an iPad as well.
The build quality is excellent and blends well with other Apple products. It includes the Thunderbolt cable which is a plus.

Personally I think it was worth every penny for the convenience!

It keeps my wires tidy, and it takes seconds to plug my laptop into my monitor, speakers, backup drive, keyboard and printer, just with one Thunderbolt wire.

Shame it's not a little cheaper, but still worth the money.

It’s a simple, elegant little box that allows you to connect multiple devices to your laptop or desktop computer via one Thunderbolt cable. Simply connect your chosen machine to the back of the box using the supplied Thunderbolt cable.

It adds an extremely useful Gigabit ethernet port to my MBP so I don’t have to rely on wireless for networking – this is invaluable for me as I live in an area where we still have ADSL broadband – frustratingly slow and unreliable.
The back has HDMI for connecting your external monitor. I use this to connect my NEC MultiSync PA271WB 27 inch LCD and get the full 2560 x 1440 resolution display fed from my humble 15″ Macbook Pro.

There are also other thunderbolt ports and a couple of USB ports on the back for connecting other devices. The box has power too so can be used to charge up your iPod or iPhone as well as powering bus-powered devices such as hard drives.
At the front end is another USB port and Stereo audio in and out ports. These are useful for conference calls etc.
Sometimes the simple things are the best and this little unassuming box is really the best. Previously I had a spaghetti-pile of cables running from the desk to my Macbook Pro. Each time I went there I had to plug and unplug various peripherals. Now my life is simpler and uncluttered, just one simple elegant cable is all I need. I’m a happy geek!

With regards the HDMI output, wouldn't send anything more than 1080i to a Dell u2711 screen (spec is 2560*1440).
Eventually figured out the MBP 15 retina also wouldn't send any more directly. Took an hour or so, but used SwitchResX to configure a custom profile of 2560x1440 at 55Hz and all worked fine. Appears to be a software/config limitation where OSX "decides" you couldn't possibly want to send any more out of the HDMI.
I guess you could hack the right config files to do the same, but at €14 SwitchResX is well worth the convenience factor.
