Let's get the cost thing out of the way first. It is expensive, so I can appreciate people being nervous about paying so much! However when you try this, the noise cancelling is so incredibly effective you will fall in love with it. I took this on a long haul flight in September 2013 just days after it was released, and it just shut out the background noise of the plane so dramatically it really helped with the journey.

I was also very impressed with the battery life. It managed the entire 11 hour flight without any problems, plus the few hour at both ends to get to the destination too. The device will continue to work as a normal headphones after the battery is gone so no problem there!

Now for some cons. The cables and the microphone clip has a mind of its own so they don't settle very well. I also found that you really have to really pick the right size ear plugs from those supplied, otherwise with the annoyingly insistent cables you will find yourself constantly adjusting them to keep them in your ears.

The other thing I don't really like is the pouch they come in. They are just a little too small for the headphones so you have to wind the cables quite tightly to fit them in the case, which worries me about wear and tear - and these are not cheap!

In conclusion, I love and adore these headphones. They are quite outstanding and well worth the money. The cons are superficial and in no way make me regret buying these. If you are looking for a small, effective noise cancelling headphones you can use daily, as well as the odd long haul flights I think these are your ideal companion.

(NB If you can't try these in the Apple store then goto a Bose store and try them before you buy).

I've just discovered that I've never properly heard my music! I bought these a few hours ago at the Apple store and I'm so impress I've just discovered that I've never properly heard my music! I bought these a few hours ago at the Apple store and I'm so impressed. The sound is crisp and you can clearly hear all the nuances of your music. So much better than my Bowers & Wilkins C5s! They also fit and stay in my ears much better than other in-ear headphones I've used. I haven't used them in a noisy environment yet but initial tests (my husband shouting at me) show a really good quality of noise cancelling. Can't wait to try them on a long-haul flight this weekend as I now have really high expectations! Yes, they're expensive and the battery pack is a bit fiddly as it's large but the sound quality is outstanding. Also great that the recharge cable fits in a standard USB plug - I just stuck it into my iPhone charger. So impressed I'm writing this...I never review.

What i will write is, they turned a noisy and crowded London Tube journey into something pleasurable, and as anyone who takes the London tube will know thats virtually impossible. I recommend these highly, expecially if you commute or travel in noisy environments.

Therefore, I didn't have reservations upgrading, was it worth the money? YES!

Sound quality: Not amazing but very good! Unless you are a complete audio snob then they are fine. You will hear a faint electronic hiss of the noise-cancelling if you have them 'on' without playing music but don't notice it once playing music. The aware-mode is good for crossing traffic or wanting to talk to someone, it basically cuts off all noise-cancelling.

The noise-cancelling itself is awesome! Fantastic reduction in background noise, great for riding the tube/metro/train/bus/plane! Walking along the street, buses quietly whoosh by and most cars now seem like silent electric ones and the person at the bus stop asking you a question seems like they are just miming song lyrics... until you embarrassingly realise they are talking to you! These make walking around feel like you are on your own Planet... population one...
Use an adaptor and these are brilliant on a plane too.

Design flaws / things to get used to (why I didn't rate 5 stars):

You have a short cable that goes from the battery pack to your iPhone, then the long cable going from the opposite end to the ear plugs. You get used to holding your phone with the battery pack behind it so it is not dangling around if they had 'mounted' it halfway along the main cable. I am concerned about how long the cable ends will last, I eventually damaged one cable on my MIE2i going into an ear-piece. Problem is, you have to take the battery pack out of your pocket along with your phone every time, therefore increasing wear and tear on the cables.

Don't forget to turn it off when you pack it away or it will continue to work away.

The remote is positioned at the Y-junction of the main cable where it splits to the separate ear-pieces. I always run my cables under my shirts/jumper so it is not dangling around, now the remote is buried under my shirt so not as quickly accessible as the MIE2i remote (functions still the same) which dangled down from one ear but was accessible. Obviously this won't be an issue if you wear your cable outside your clothing (where it catches on things and you're advertising to would-be thieves).

Conclusion, just buy them, enjoy walking around in your own quiet little world and just put up with the minor functionality issues, they are actually well designed as you would expect of Bose.

however after much thought making i decided to return to the sound i love and make the big purchase of the Quietcomforts... basically the sound is there.... but just so low... if you are expecting these to be loud, even with Noise cancelling activated then you will be disappointed.

they seem to compensate the lack of loudness by the noise cancellation, but the noise cancellation only works on simple static sounds, IE the sound of an engine, humming etc... so they are perfect for travellers etc... but because they feel so plasticky they do let a lot of sound in

the other issue is the huge Battery flat pack that you have dangling from your iPhone, the size is the exact length of an iPhone 5 screen, and if you don't have it charged then the noise cancellation wont work and you are stuck with a really awful tinny sound from the headphones... certainly not worth the £259 you just spent!

If your going to spend this sort of cash, you will want a wow factor, and I will just say that you wont get it there is a lot better in the market and for a lot less the price...

I tested these walking down a busy London street and could not hear the traffic. They also feature an "aware mode" that allows you to hear some background noise. The only downside is that the noise cancellation module has to be kept next to the phone and you can't turn of the NC feature from the remote. There is an extension cable available which I've yet to test. I used my own Belkin high quality extension and there was noticeable sound distortion, so I guess there's a reason why Bose charge £10 for the extension. I listen to an eclectic range of music and don't like to have too much bass, so these are perfect. The sound may not be the best available, but the noise cancellation more than makes up for that. I'm now looking forward to using these on my next flight.
