The set up is easy thanks to the set up assistant that is pre installed (literally 2 minutes). The drive is near enough silent and even goes to sleep when not in use (not like other drives that I have had that run constantly, which gets really annoying). This is an overall great drive that I would defiantly recommend. …

Great Product! Excellent Design, Storage and Overall Performance!!
I bought this hard drive approximately a month ago and has been a great back up for all of my college work, as well as all of my p I bought this hard drive approximately a month ago and has been a great back up for all of my college work, as well as all of my photography. Personally I do three coursework based subjects at college, which filled up my Macbook Pro Retina laptop... Lacie 3TB Porsche Design to the rescue!!! I am able to back up all of my files, whether they be long word documents, image, movies and applications such as the Adobe CS6 package I am able to store everything on the hard drive with no problems. Some people say that the hard drive has sharp edges and can be dangerous. Personally I do not think the hard drive is dangerous, even though the edges are (slightly) sharp, it is a desktop hard drive anyone and you will not need to move it about. Otherwise go for the 1TB or 2TB portable Lacie hard drive.
The only down side I have found with the hard drive is the motor inside the hard drive is a little too noisy for my liking, but I have got used to in within the month of owning it.
Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone who has a lot of things to back up, which is then safe and neatly packed into the Lacie hard drive. …

Too Noisy - did I get a bad one...?
The cost of this drive is excellent value for the amount of storage. Also looks good and transfer rates seem good on USB 3 but ver The cost of this drive is excellent value for the amount of storage. Also looks good and transfer rates seem good on USB 3 but very slow on USB 2 which is to be expected. However the two failings are 1. The packaged software is poor - there is far more flexibility in the mac disk utility for partitioning, formatting etc if you want to use this drive for mac and windows backups/storage (i.e. exFAT) which is fine. 2. However the most annoying thing is the shear noise this thing makes - could be a one off bad drive - its for this reason mines going back to Apple for a refund. …

It will only be usable by whichever computer connected to it first, the other computer will be ignored. However, if you set up the first computer as a server you can access the same drive from multiple computers. Connect the hard drive to a Mac and go to your system preferences. Under "Sharing" in the Internet and Wireless row. In the first box (Shared Folders:" click the plus at the bottom left and select the hard drive you want to share. When you have selected it, you can click on the hard drive in the System Preferences window to change your privacy settings by setting Users who can access it. If you are setting it up at home I'd set Everyone to Read & Write. On the second Mac, open a Finder window and click "Go" then "Connect to Server" then, in the window that appears, "Browse". Click on the Mac the hard drive is connected to and you should be able to access it as if the hard drive were plugged into the second Mac.
It will work over Wi-Fi, but you really should have your Mac's connected by an Ethernet cable. It is MUCH faster and more reliable and the cables are very inexpensive. …

I currently am doing that with my 2008 iMac, storing all my media on an external hard drive. I've got all my iTunes and Aperture data on an external drive and the iMac locates all the info and works just fine. I've then set my Time Machine to backup the external drive in addition to my internal iMac drive. My goal was the same as yours, to reduce the amount of space on my internal 1T iMac disc. It all works perfectly! You can find directions on how to set this up online - sorry I don't recall offhand exactly where I got the directions to do this.
