Networking icon

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.1

Dual Band icon

UPDATED
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, AirPort Extreme works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.2 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 per cent better performance and up to 25 per cent better range than with the previous-generation AirPort Extreme Base Station.3

Guest Networking icon

Guest networking.

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.

Printer icon

Print without wires.

Have several computers in your home or office but only one printer? No problem. Just connect a compatible printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and the printer instantly becomes available to all the computers (Mac and PC) on your wireless or wired network. (See system requirements.)

Drive Sharing icon

Share your hard drive.

You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.4

Security icon

Strong security and access controls.

Rest easy — AirPort Extreme takes strong measures to prevent unauthorised intrusion into your wireless network. It offers a built-in firewall and supports industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP. Yet it’s still easy for authorised users to connect to the base station, thanks to its simple set-up utility and powerful access controls.

Yes and no - If you add the contents of the external hard drive to your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, you will be able to stream content from the iTunes library to the 2010 Apple TV. This will require you to have the Airport Extreme and external hard drive powered on, with iTunes running on your Mac or PC, in order to share content.

In a nutshell, you won't be able to stream video directly from the hard drive, but by adding the content to iTunes with Home Sharing, it is possible.

You received the wrong advice. The Express with 802.11n can join ANY and every network that your wireless computer can join, however, the Express can not wirelessly "extend" most non-Apple wireless networks.

You say that your wireless network provides full coverage in your house. To keep it that way AND add AirTunes, you should NOT setup the Express to "extend" your wireless network, but to "join" it.

First, reset the Express to factory defaults, then wait one minute or so to verify that it is actually broadcasting its default "Apple network xxxxxxx" - where the six x's are the last six characters of the Express' AirPort ID.

    Next unplug the Express and:
(1.) Connect it to your home stereo or powered speakers.
(2.) Plug AirPort Express into an electrical outlet.
(3.) Open AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Express, and click Continue.
(4.) Follow the onscreen instructions, this time selecting to join your wireless network. "Update" and then quit AirPort Utility.
(5.) Open iTunes, open Preferences in the iTunes or Edit menu, select "Devices" and choose your stereo or speakers from the pop-up menu in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.
    (6,) Enjoy music.

    The answer is yes.

From the downloadable manual ("Apple AirPort Networks"):

"...you can connect an AirPort Extreme Base Station or a Time Capsule using Ethernet. A network with devices connected using Ethernet is known as a roaming network. You can also connect Apple wireless devices wirelessly to extend the network...

"...Several AirPort Extreme Base Stations or Time Capsules can be set up to create a single
wireless network. Client computers using AirPort can move from device to device with
no interruption in service (a process known as roaming)....

    "To set up roaming:
1 Connect all of the AirPort Extreme Base Stations and Time Capsules to the same subnet
    on your Ethernet network.
2 Give each device a unique name.
3 Give each device the same network name and password.
4 Set up the devices as bridges, following the instructions in the previous section."

Time Machine is a tool for regular routine backups to a hard drive. If the external hard drive is properly setup thru the AirPort Extreme as a network-shared hard drive, then yes, Time Machine will allow you to "backup" data to it. But, Time Machine will lockup their entire hard drive as a backup destination, unless you partition it. More

Your printer is a network printer (it has built-in Ethernet networkability) and will work equally well using Ethernet cable or USB cable. After connecting the cable, open the Print & Fax panel of your OS X System Preferences, add (+) your printer and allow it to download the latest software for your printer so you're ready to print. I have found Ethernet to be a more desirable connection than USB, as USB can limit some functionality on some printers, although I doubt there are any problems using an HP 2600n with either cable.
